Something bigger than a fiddy

So.... let's say I need an engine to power a plane where a DA-50 just might not cut it. Probably looking at 17 pounds or less ready to fly minus fuel, but a fairly large round cowl. I'm thinking that swinging a 23" prop very strongly, or swinging a 24" prop will be necessary just due to the size of the cowl. This will be an aerobatic machine so weight is a factor. I've read a little bit about the Evolution 58 and the Brillelli 366 engines; are there any other engines I should be looking at? Thanks!

I had this same question and ended up getting a Brillelli 60. It's the same weight as a DA 50 or ZDZ 50 NG but should be able to pull a 22x8 prop a few hundred higher (on pitts mufflers) which is about whats needed for that weight. I have not gotten through break in on mine and it's only about 7000 RPM on a Xoar 22x8. I hope to be around the 7200-7300 after 4 gallons. Right now, at less than 2 gallons, it pulls about the same as a 50cc but is probably not leaned enough.
PS: The ZDZ 60 and MVVS/Evolution 58 are both a pound heavier than the DA 50, ZDZ 50 NG, and Brillelli 60 so you are adding a pound to an already heavy plane. For example you're now at 19 pounds instead of 18 pounds.

RC Ignitions converted Zenoah G62. Stone reliable, 4 1/2 pounds all up. Check this link for real weights.....Bob did a great job...http://www.rcaerobats.net/GAS_ENGINE...ENGINE_WTS.htm

I had an evolution 58 on a Aeroworks Yak 18 pounds and It flew great. I flew it with a 24-8 prop. I would say it depends on your elevation. I live at 5300' but density altitude consistently runs 7500' so I have a 3w 70 with a 24-8 prop on my wild hare Cap 232. it is porky at 20 ponds, but flies great. The evolution is a great engine when broke in. It is reliable, smooth, fairly quiet and starts easy. Mine would swing a 24-8 NX prop at 6300 rpm.

The MT 57 will handle a 24x8 very well at 6700RPM. It is a long stroke engine that why it will handle it very well. Look in the Buy Sell on RCU. It is being offered with a free header.

My new Brillelli 366GT with 4 gallons turns right around 6950 hot on a Mejzlik 23x8 with a pitts muffler.. side would give a little bit more. On an ES pipe you can expect another 500 or 600 rpm.
24x8 JFX at 6700 with a pipe Larry.. might want to include that. How many non dealer / actual customers are actually getting that Larry?

DA 85 way too much in this one.

The Brillelli is very good and very light. If noise is a consideration you need a better muffler (Scott's pitts muffler is nice and cheap). The MVVS/Evolution 58 is a fabulous engine but prefers a cannister or pipe which kicks up the weight to greater than the 80cc ZDZ or DA (on a muffler).
p.s It takes 30% more power to swing a JXF 24x8 at 6700 than a Mejz 23x8 at 6950. In fact, the 23x8 mejz needs to spin around 7600 rpm to match the thrust and power of the JXF 24x8 at 6700. That is why I am not impressed when people brag about their new 85cc engines (on "another" site) swinging a "huge 28x10 mejzlik" prop, because many smaller 26x10 wood props actually put a larger load on the engine.

It was kind of a nice way of saying the DA-85 sucks, it shakes too much and is overkill for a 50-60cc size airframe.

The Area 51cc is turning a 23-A prop 7000 RPM new out of the box and will hover a 18 1/2 pound plane a little over 1/2 throttle.

I know you're going to hate this Ryan, but: 3W-55i with a KS86 can. A little heavier than some, but the KS can makes up for that, (the can is small, light and very efficeint). Okay, you can laugh now......

I was going to suggest a 3W75.
I'm running a 75cc conversion engine with electronic ignition on an Extra that weighs about 18 pounds. It's swinging a Xoar 24-10 over 7000RPM. I think the 3W75 would perform about the same.

Thank you Dan, I will take your suggestion in all earnest and utmost consideration.

Guys this plane should weigh about 16 pounds. The problem is the drag, not the weight. Really, a 24x8 is all I'm looking for. This plane can fit a DA-100 without cutting the cowl for size reference. I have flown one with a DA-50 and it flew well with a 23" prop, and it's even possible the engine wasn't performing up to potential. My DA-50 runs strong and may power the plane well but I think something just a little more powerful is the ticket.
PS Here is a spy photo of the new machine:

I agree with Jake. For some reason I thought you were looking for an engine for a 18-19# plane. Most of the 50cc engines will work fine, and the Brillelli 366gt, MVVS 58, or MT-57 should be able to turn a 24" prop sufficiently.
Do you have room for a cannister or tuned pipe?

just had to say, you will not be asking your self for more power if you went with a 58gx2.
i have one in a EF yak at 17.5 lbs., with a MTW pipe that is lighter than some of the da50 EF yaks are coming in at.i wouldn't worry about the weight of the 58, in this size of plane you will never notice it.i had a da50 in the same plane with the same pipe, looking to lose some weight and the only difference i could tell was the lack of power with the da.i went back to the 58 in the yak ,i was addicted to that 24-8 spinning at 7550.
