Default 1/16th hydoplane

Not sure if there is any interest on this subject, but have started a scratch build of a 1/16th unlimited hydro. It is a Gary Finlay drawing which I believe have been around awhile.
I am a fixed wing and heli flyer, but have an interest in boats as well.Over the years have built two boats but never a hydro.so now is the time. The pics show a few hours work so far.
Hope to run brushless and li.po batteries.Open to any comments on the boat and power system.

Hi Mintie,

Looks like you have a great start. These hydros are really simple to build and go together very quickly. There are a couple people on RCU who are building this boat, myself being one of them. If you go to RumRunnerRacing FE forum you will find a bunch of information and build threads as well. My boat is going to have a 19t brushed motor and use Nimh batteries for cost reasons. I am not an experienced FE modeler but I will try to help with any questions you may have. Take care.

jetkat..your dumas looks cool.....mine is a scratch build, trace every thing out and cut with a knife.

chief3452....yes it is an easy build surprising how far I got in a short time.I normally build large scale aircraft taking months and some times years to build. This is a change.
Will hop over to the site you mentioned and have a look. You might want to keep me posted on your build as well. I am in a lower spot than you , this is my first FE model.
so I am having to learn all about the e- power side of modelling.cheers

Hi Mintie,

RCU does not allow linking to sites that require subscription so I can't post the link to the RumRunner admins. Poke around the homepage and you will be able to contact them thru your email. Good luck, and let me know if you have any more problems.

misshydro....I got the plan from ...astecmodels.co.uk.. go onto the web site for free plans and it is all there. down load the pdf file and I took it to work and enlarged to the size..I did the Classic Round nose and the Notre Dame.
will build the Notre dame later.

rcboatergirl....yes it is built out of balsa and will have a 25gm fiberglass bottom.Intend to build the rudder, strut & shaft units.

A bit of an update on the build......Because my boat is now under weight[plan says at this stage 4/5 oz]Mine at this stage is only 3 oz , decided to put in some floatation.Only added 5 gms.Not really fussed on losing it to the bottom of the lake.Deck all on and now ready to do the finishing shaping.
Being my first water prop driven boat looking for a little help in the wire drive system. Any one with some nice pics to help a guy out. will build it myself.
The plan shows a tube with the wire in going from motor to prop. This tube seems to have a bend , now do I have to put that in ?
what about the dog , to hold the prop, where do we get them and how is that held on?
Dum questions for you gurus but have to start somewhere. Up to you if you want to answer.
We have a lake two streets from home ,cant fly my float planes there because of the houses but a boat works just fine.cheers.

more update on the build....getting ready to make up the shaft and rudder systems.Hull has a coat of sealer on and the cowl is shaped up ..have decided to do the exposed engine model so have that to shape up. All up weight at this stage is 3.5 oz.looking good with this weight.

The bend is to make the prop at the right angle with the motor at a convenient angle. Highly recommended that you put it in.

HI Andy..yes I intend to put it in ,was just wondering if the tube can be purchased like that or bend it my self. If I bend it, it will have to be a nice smooth curve to get the wire to run nicely. Am I correct on this. cheers

It's very easy to bend it yourself. Because it's a gentle curve there's no need for annealing. You can make a form and bend it around that. Note that the tube WILL spring back a little. Try it once with the "final" bend, then modify as necessary to get it to bend like that for you.

FWIW, I don't use a form to bend it. I just bend it bare hands until it's right.

Yes it worked out just fine....now to machine up the strut end and the strut frame.. This part may take a couple of days depending on work commitments.
