RE: Let's see your work shop!

heck, after being orderly for 81 years, I deserve disaray. I think I know where everything is supposed to be, anyhow it keeps me busy looking for that little item. Nadine, keeps asking me when I'm going to finally retire? what for?- I'm enjoying myself and its cheaper than the local bar and the gals aren't interested in me or my money anymore. dick

RE: Let's see your work shop!

I guess you retired folks need something to pass your time. Besides, trying to find an orderly place for all that would require one of those Reality TV shows to come in and build you a new 11,000 Sq. ft. shop. I wish I could retire. I still have a loooooong ways to go before that happens!

it ain't funny its true. I know 2 fellows who collect stuff-- that is according to me-- like postage stamps, books full and he knows each and every one and is value. SELL ?? heck no--I'm a collector. other one, old baseball cards, sell? not me I'm a collector!!. me? Nadine publically states that she is married to a junk man. SOOO to each his OWN and have fun doing it. Nadine and the children will make the ultimate decesion. just don't think of having to move. believe me its rough. dick

Love those pictures of tools and parts in dozens of places! :D
Got a sign over my desk: NOT DISORGANIZED ... JUST FLEXIBLE

Just looked for it, the sign, it missing from usual place..... it will turn up somewhere below last location. Shop 1300sf is marginally better.

Well I just moved into my new place and it needs a ton of work before I'm ever able to do a thing on my planes. Here's my shop as of 8-27-05. A real mess and it really sucks.
BUT NOT FOR LONG.....

Mirror that photo and it could pass as a photo of my garage.

I've made some progress in turning my garage into a workshop. Here are two photos of the current state of progress.

I just finished building the cabinets from scratch. Made some of them extra wide to hold kits. I plan on adding upper cabinets above the base cabinets, and I may add more base cabinets on the third wall. I haven't decided on how to handle the ceiling. I'm considering 3 options, sheet rock the rafters, add more joists and sheet rock the ceiling, or add a drop down ceiling.

Dick,

Thanks for the kind words. I've sacrificed a lot of this year's flying season working on it. Put in new lights, A/C, insulation and drywall and a new door. I want to get it done so I can get back to my Spit build, and the 6 other kits I have waiting. I'm sure by mid winter, it'll look like a disaster! [8D]

Hey Vicman,

I really like your Skyshark! Is it ducted fan or turbine powered??:D

LOL, You made me go back and look. A good friend of mine carved that from a Cedar log I gave him a few years back.

I haven't decided on how to handle the ceiling. I'm considering 3 options, sheet rock the rafters, add more joists and sheet rock the ceiling, or add a drop down ceiling.
You might think about putting 1/4" or 3/8" ply on top of the rafters to create storage areas, leaving the rafters exposed on the underside.

You can hang a lot of stuff from the rafters without having to duck; I'm 6'2" and the only things hanging low enough to bother me were [link=http://home.mindspring.com/~the-plumber/Models/L-4/Wing/pages/CubWing01.htm]the wing panels [/link] for the 33% L-4 (21" chord on those wings).

That's what I did in my building shop. I store sheet and tube stock up there, hang models in progress from PVC cradles between rafters, the powered dust filter hangs from the rafters, and I also hang infrequently used items like "Vanessa" from the rafters, and of course having the rafters exposed made it very easy to hang the flourescent fixtures and run wiring.

You can paint the rafters and the bottom of the ply storage areas white to recoup light loss due to not having a finished ceiling.

No matter how large you plan your workshop there will come a time when it is too small, forcing you to find new ways to store your stuff while you're working on your other stuff.

RE: Let's see your work shop!

A little progress each day here this weekend. I had it kind of done and just had to get the drywall up too. So I went for it on Sunday. I'm pleased with it so far but still a long way to go.
I'm not knocking anybody by any means, but I just can't even start on a plane project unless I've got a clean area to work and everything is in it's place. At least the place I put it :D

Who only has one project at a time[X(]:D

RE: Let's see your work shop!

I've been thinking about it all weekend. I'm probably going to do a combination of things for the ceiling. I will add a couple of more ceilnig joists at the back of the garage and make a storage loft about 4 to 6 feet deep. I'll sheet rock the bottom of it. For the rest of the garage, I'm thinking of insulating between the roof rafters and sheet rocking them forming a vaulted ceiling. I may add a second section of storage in the center of the garage too. Most of this storage will be used for household stuff, while the majority of the cabinets I have in place, plus the upper wall cabinets I plan on building will be for the workshop.
Funny (ironic) thing is, now that I've started this project, I may be moving in the not too distant future. Well, the work I've done to the garage should add value to the house. If I don't move, I'm happy with the way it's comming out, and if I do move, it will be because of a huge financial opportunity and I'll be able to look for a place with a workshop, or a large enough propperty to build one. Hmm, maybe a cnc lathe and mill too:)

How did you ever find your way into my shop? You don't even know where I live! I lay something BIG down and if I turn away for a minute, it's disappeared.
