Sorry links don't work ?

Here's mine. This is the attic area above my garage. It is Air conditioned, heated and I have a TV, stereo and refrigerator.

My primary building surface is a drafting table with a thick mirror and ceiling tiles to top it off. I have three other benches to keep projects out of the way that are in the works. I store most completed planes down stairs in the garage.

Here are some photos of my workshop-in-progress. I just finished building the cabinets. I made some extra large to be able to store kits. I still have to do some wiring, install insulation in the roof, and finish off the walls with white wall panels.

Saromos,
That will never do. You must get balsa and stuff all over those work benches asap. A clean shop is just, .......well , it just shouldnt be done! <g>

I guess I should have taken the photos last week before I started cleaning from all the construction. I even saved a bag of sawdust to use as a filler. I gave up the flying season in order to build this. The walls are insulated and rocked. I intalled an A/C unit. I cleared out a lot of stuff that had been stored in the garage. Building the cabinets took the longest time. I am happy with the results so far. Just gotta finish the electrical and insulating the roof, then I can get back to making balsa dust[8D]

Thanks Jerry. Cabinet building is something I've always wanted to try. Also, it's the only way I could get a cabinet that was 54" wide to accomodate boxed kits. For the base cabinets, I built two 54" cabinets, three 48" cabinets, three 24" tripple drawer units, and for the uppers, six 36" units and one 30" unit all 38" tall.

Putting an AC in the garage was the smartest thing I ever did for my shop. Now I dont sweat on the wood I'm working with.

I think I have the smallest shop ever. Would you believe I build giant sized aircraft?

Don't forget, the more shop space and the more table space you have, the more junk you will accumulate. And besides look at it this way, yours is very quick to clean :D

Well, here is my workshop. I am a novice to r/c planes, so I am just getting organized. I do want a larger work bench (the one in the center) but not too heavy in case I have to move it to work on our cars. A 36" x 80" door would work for the top. If any of you guys have plans or some photos of a nice work bench, I would appreciate you posting them. Oh, just in case you wonder how I commandeered the garage for my hangar, turns out that my wife is afraid of hooking her mirrors on the garage door frame ,so she parks it in the driveway. I got her a remote starter so she can start it from inside the house in the winter. Talk about luck! Thanks, Mike[img][/img]

Scott,

Your workshop is an inspiration for me. I want mine to look like that someday. Unfortunately, my garage barely has enough room to store the lawn mower.

How many square feet do you have?

[link=http://home.mindspring.com/~the-plumber/PhotoAlbums/Torsion%20Box%20Building%20Table/index.htm]My building bench [/link] falls into that 'too heavy' category, but then it's a 6'X30"X6" MDF structure. You could easily cut the dimensions down, particularly the thickness, and cut the weight in half. You could also use 1/4" or 3/8" MDF (if you can find it) rather than 1/2", which would also yield a significant weight savings.

OTOH, a heavy bench does tend to stay put when you run into it, meaning 2 things : 1) the glue joint you just made up probably won't fall apart and 2) you learn to stop running into heavy benches real quick 'cuz yer shins don't much care for the experience.

Follow the links in the photo album to the original DIY articles.

EDIT : I just checked the links in the photo album, and according to the programming note the torsion box article(s) are set for re-broadcast on 12/09/05 on DIY. FWIW.

Hey Mike, Here is a link to my work shop. I haven't updated my site for a while, been too busy working on planes. Need to take the time to update it with my present fleet. I made my main work table out of a solid core door. These things do not warp and are very sturdy. I build three of the benches in my shop. The planes are on the site. Let me know if I can help

Hattend,

Thanks for the complement. I am getting closer to completion. I am installing electrical outlets along the counters and finishing on the wallboard. I picked up a small radiant heater for the coming winter nights, and a 6 hp shopvac that I plan on using for vacuum forming. The whole garage is about 400 sq ft. I have household items on metal shelves and my tablesaw and compound saw along one wall. I've also given the wall cabinets on the back wall, a set of drawers, and one of the 4' lower cabinets for the wife to use. Hopefully, about half that will be cleared out when she has a last garage sale. To help inspire you, here is a before photo and one of the more recent photos.

RE: Let's see your work shop!

I have five kids. The youngest just turned one and loves to help out while I'm working on the planes. The last time, he clipped the stab, elevators and rudder off my Rascal 40! I've been waiting for more "help" on the 27% extra 260, but I've averted the situation by moving to the basement. The "new & improved" shop is 16X24 and wide open. I'll have to post a pic soon. The "little helper" has been replaced by the other 4 kids. They ride their bikes and scooters around in the basement. I've already warned them about "shop space" being off limits. I duct taped a 2X4 to the floor to keep them out, but that's kind of like adding fuel to the fire and gives them an obsticle to jump over with the scooters!!!

My wife is anal about glue, heat, etc... I broke her in on old furnature and our "first" home. Now, I'm not allowed to go near the kitchen table with anything that resembles an airplane or associated equipment.

My garage is actually packed tighter, floor to ceiling than your 'before' picture but you have given me hope for the future.

If I can just get the wife to agree to that garage sale/dump run that she keeps promising me, I'll be on my way. :)

Thanks again
Don
