RE: kmp d3 due november 30th i just ordered one
Has anyone tried the RCV SP 60 or SP 90 engines on the DC 3 yet?
My idea is to use the top air intake and make a some ducting to force air over the cooling fins exiting through the opening at the bottom, applying the 1:3 inlet outlet rule. This way i do not have to butcher the cowls too much. My only concern is the prop clearance and power.....
The SP 60 swing a 13.5" 3 blade prop. The SP 90 (recommended size 4 stroke) swing an 15.5" 3 blade prop (That will not fit).
Does two the SP 60 have enough power for this bird?
If anyone used the RCV CD91's, how much do they stick out?
Regards

RE: kmp d3 due november 30th i just ordered one
Hey ! I havent even bought this ARF, Right now I am just collecting all the Accesories, Engines etc. so that when I buy the model, I should be able to go immediatly. This is my first twin project and judging by the experience that I have had with Zen 20s, I think that it would be safest bet. But I would really like to know if someone has actually installed and flown this model with it.

OK here's a question. The instructions aren't too clear. Do the wing spars get glued into the center section of the wing or do they get glued into the wings? And for some reason the instructions have you epoxying the rib template to the wing center section. Thats absurd. Esp since you only get one.
Thanks,
Charles

i think you just fuel proof them...
the rib template to where?? didnt see that one
I have nearlly everything installed but with some many other projects and a new addition to the family I really havent had the time for this monster of a twin. as soon it is all in I will post more picks.
i recently maiden my dad's c-160 and it was a blast with two os 25's it has renewed my interest in finishing the dc3

RE: kmp d3 due november 30th i just ordered one
After speaking to Scalenutz about his setup with the OS 75AX i am also thinking of using them. There is a local guy who makes very nice wrap around rear mounted inverted mufflers for 2 and four stroke engines that I will use. This Will be a much cheaper option than going for a pair of 91 to 115 fourstrokes. I was seriously considering RCV 60 SP's but was convinced by some senior members of this and RCMF forum that I should go for somthing simple and reliable the Sp's have a lotof in cowl work to be done to create propper airflow.
Those of youwho have already build this plane, what is your experience with the recommended fueltank setup?

Hi , I am going to use Zen G20 as I have singularly faced problems of unreliable operation on the glow engines; this is my first twin project and I dont want to compromise reliability at any cost.
Here are the pictures of my installation in progress, I am custom building mufflers for this project and only thing that will protrude out will be small header next to the cylinder head, will post pictures as my construction progresses.
(Sorry for grainy pictures, they have been clicked on my cell phone)

I dont know about thread being alive or not but, I am still interested in knowing whatever that I can about this beautiful model. Currently my progress is slow as our flying has gone down because of ongoing monsoon season. I have run in the engines 3 tankfulls so that there are no problems during flight etc. I would definately like to get feedback from anyone who has used ZEN 20cc and flown this bird.
Another aeromodeller from Bombay is building his with SAITO 20cc gas engines. but he is still stuck at the similar stage.

I havent ordered mine yet am waiting for flight reports. I want to use 35cc Evolution gas engines proply more power than needed but the footprint of the engine is really small and mounts on a typical I beam motor mount. I currently have the 40gx and have had no problems it runs flawless in my 96" Pilatus Porter

Don,why would you even try to put something like that in???Are we talking about KMP DC3?? This one will fly great with a pair of 60 size engines ..35 cc is perfect for the Ziroli DC3..
And I´ll think You can read flight reports and see videos of it here on RCU..

I would like the reliability of gas and the saveings, am open to any gas suggestions. My understanding is that the max prop size would be 13" is this correct or can I get a 14" in thier this will also make a difference in choices of engine

RE: kmp d3 due november 30th i just ordered one
Don,
Only reason I am using gas is because of my bad experience with glow engines (It has nothing to do with glow engines as such but more to do with my luck). The Zen 20 is actually overpowering the model but I guess that is the best you can get at or around 20cc size as also the fact that I have several models with Zen 20 on them.
If you go over 13" prop then you are getting too close to the fuselage, Just check out some of the Zen 20 installation pictures that I have posted in earlier thread.

Andre,
How about a flight report and some pictures of your installation?
-Position of Battery packs,
-retract control system and
-general layout of hardware
What is your AuW?

RE: kmp d3 due november 30th i just ordered one
Hi,
On my kit I had the following quality issues:
a. Wing centre section was twisted (about 1.5 degrees incidence diffence). Probably took it out of the mold whist it was "green"
b. Windows did not fit well - had to sand away window corners
c. Wing did not seat well - had to sand "flat" section at rear to get good fit
d. Tail wheel assembly was a pain, and grub screw in "streering rod" assebly was stripped.
e. Quality of "Springbok Flying Safaris" sticker was very poor
f. Would have been nice to get stickers for rear end in kit - may have to go and take pics of full size and have stickers made
We took my plane about 5 accidents high today, and tried to stall it. With no flaps and full elevator it just dropped the nose3, and with full flaps it just bobbed the nose up and down. Was very pleasant surprise, as I expected vicious tip stall with the high wing loading and narrow wingtips. Electric version is superb flyer!

Andre
