RE: 1.20 Edge Review, the beginnings
Tom,
My Edge will have a ROTO 35 installed in it. I am getting the servos now, I will use 5625's and a 5945 rudder or 5945's all around.
My last plane was the Giles 202 72.5 inch span and the Edge wings dwarf my Giles wings so I feel really good about the ROTO 35 install.
My Giles I used HS605's in the aileron and one stripped in flight and caused a uncontrolled rolling that scared everyone at the field, I dropped throttle and fought it free. I will never use nylon gear servo in aileron again. I will keep you posted on my luck with the ROTO 35.
Thanks,
Rob

That looks to be a popular engine, I'm sure you will let us know how it works out.
This very small gas engine market seems to be pretty active.

if the rudder goes to the left and pully on the right side loosens, than this is fine, but it must tighten when its all straightened out.
same for the other way around.

Hi Tom,
Any news on the ETA of the latest shipment of planes? Will the 73" Edge be arriving in the the USA this week?
Cheers,
Dan

Does anybody have an opinion on MVVS 26 vs OS 160 performance. I have an OS 160 with 18x8 doing 8000 rpm are these figures realistic from a MVVS 26 straight out of the box
Cheers

I don't see the MVVS 26 (almost the same size at 1.58 CI) putting out as much as the 1.60 OS. Gas is about 10% less powerful than alcohol, and alcohol/nitro has even more of an advantage.
However the OS 1.60 is overkill for the baby Edge and the MVVS 26 should still be plenty of power.

This seems to be the only unaswered question so far. I did not ask the question because Dan did.

I had the OS 160 in this plane, but after fliying it i decide to move to the mvvs 26 and avoid the glow, in fact this is one of the few planes were i would install an engine smaller than 50cc due to the extremly ligth weigth plane and the difference with the tank empty is only 9 oz between them
Engine is completly in the cowl except the sparck plug mounted @ 87º (not at 90º) just the same than OS 160.

I'm putting one together right now with a Brison 2.4. This is so that I can give an intelligent answer to all the questions about gas engines on this plane.
So far everything fits except the Bisson wraparound muffler so I'm using a side mount can. IT should fly this weekend.

RE: 1.20 Edge Review, the beginnings
I am getting one of these 1.20s with the next shipment. I am considering putting an O.S. 1.60 or a Saito 1.80. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this? Also what is the appropriate linkage size to use on this plane, 4-40? or other? I cant wait to get this project started! looks like a great plane.

RE: 1.20 Edge Review, the beginnings
All of my hardware is 4-40. Go with the OS 1.60. It's cheaper than the 180, unless you already have one, and mine needed the extra weight of the 160 to balance. I had a 180 around, but bought a 160 anyways. Kinda had to since I got one of the ones from the first shipment, but also because I could never get good RPM's with an 18x6 on the 180, but my 160 will turn an 18x6 really good. Plus the 160 is a lot easier on fuel. I had mine up about 7 minutes and the tank was still about 3/4 full. Of course I wasn't doing a lot of heavy 3D, but I was half throttle or better so I'd have plenty of fuel for 3D. My 180 required a 24 oz. tank to stay up 12 minutes doing just loops and rolls. Another choice is the YS 140 Sport. I might get a second for one of these engines.

Yeah Ben, I am leaning toward the 1.60. The fuel economy would be a plus. What type of engine mount did you run with your 1.60? I would have originally wanted a light weight mount, but if this plane comes out tail heavy maybe i should consider a metal one. Also what type of rudder setup do you run? Id be curious also of your servo choice. Back to the linkages, I saw the titanium turnbuckle model from hangar 9 that looked pretty good. Also saw some central hobbies stuff that looked interesting. What type of control horn is the way to go? the threaded bar type(not sure what they are called) or the nylon (robart) type? Also does anyone know of a carbon fiber gear set that fits or is made for this plane? I think i could have one custom made, but would rather buy a "tested" model if possible.

RE: 1.20 Edge Review, the beginnings
I just used the Dave Brown mount that comes with the plane. Mounted the throttle servo behind the firewall to get it to balance with no additional weight. I have Hitec 5625MG's on elevators and ailerons and a 5945 on rudder. Using 4.8 volt batteries. I bought the hardware pack from Tom. The only thing I didn't use in it was the pushrods because I bought carbon fiber rods and 4-40 ends from Central Hobbies. I just did that out of personal preference. A lot of people like the hardware pack as is. I didn't use the fuel dot just because I ran a tube from the T out of the cowl to fill it. The new ones have to where you can mount the tank further back which means you might need a pump for the 160. Oh, and I used the slimline muffler on mine just because I prefer them to Bisson. I have two Hobbico 1650maH 4.8 volt batteries behind the wing tube on the tray with the receiver on top of them. Oh, control horns need to be 6-32 if you don't get Tom's pack. Mine flies great with the hardware pack...

The new planes have two tank mounts, one up close right behind the engine, theother is under the wing tube. You may use either one. The one farther back is meant for engines that have a pump, either glow or gas. Keep in mind that Walbro carbs have a built-in pump so any gas engine will be able to use the rear mount.
Putting the tank back on the CG means the CG does not change as you burn off fuel, a definite benefit.
Also we had some complaints about the hardpoint holes being drilled on odd angles. I reported this to the builder who went back and redrilled them to be sure they are straight and square.
The by-product of this is thye plane will require 8-32 studs for the larger holes, so in the hardware kits we'll be supplying the same horn kits that come with the 28% planes.

Hey tom,
you need to invest in a better phone service, one that has call waiting or something.
Half the time I call, I get line busy...
[:@]
Anyway, have the issues with the wings and servo leads been fixed?
I have been hearing issues with the frame, its very week towards the gear and the firewall.
I know this guy that had the prototype and he is selling the frame for just 100 dollars saying the plane has to many problems.
so, what has been fixed between the prototype and the final?

Frame? I never heard that term used before.
The motorbox sides are stronger, that's probably what you are referring to. We added some gussets to get rid of a stress riser where the sides went through F1.
I have no idea what you are referring to in "wings and servo leads".
Our phones are always busy on Mondays handling spare parts calls from people who had a bad weekend. Call waiting would simply make it harder for everyone, interrupting me to answer another call instead of finishing the one I'm on which might be yours. If we have outgrown one incoming and one outgoing line, then that's about as much success as I can handle. There's always email, that's how most of my customers contact me.
Maybe you would be happier if you bought something from a larger company with a larger support staff and a big expensive phone system.
