So far I have some trimming issues I had to figure out. She could not hold a straight line on the verticals and the descents were off as well. Everything seemed out of wack from the last time I flew her with the ZDZ up front. I thought maybe the wingloading was to high and she was flying to heavy but then I notice something strange, The engine would tilt a bit when I grabbed the prop from top to bottom. Under further investigating I realized that the whole motor box had loosened up. Even after adding washers for more up and right thrust adjustment, I still measured 1 degree of downthrust today.
I never did anything to the motorbox to beef it up for this powerful engine, but know I definitely will. I also believe that I might have opened up the firewall to much to give access to the rear mounting carb weakening the entire structure. I already removed the old firewall and know in the process of making a new one.
Trying my best to work on her as fast as possible so that I can start practicing for the next IMAC contest in september. With all the issues between January and know this will be the only contest I will have a chance of making.

Also I haven't weighed it yet nor did I get any rpm readings, was spending most of the time trying to figure out why she was flying that way.
I have a friend who has a brand new Bisson muffler made for the mvvs 58 that he wants to sell to me for 50 bucks. He has that engine on a warbird with a custom exhaust so he never used the pitts. I will try to pick it up from him soon and check the rpms and sound with the new muffler.

Mike:
I had one other guy with about 70 flights on his report a loos firewall. I guess I'll have to give the same instructions as with the early Edges. This is for any other people, too late for you.
Lay the fuse down on its side, nose pointing down. Dribble thin CA into joint between the firewall and the motorbox sides. Repeat this until the CA is not absorbed and sort of puddles.
Then use epoxy to put 1/2" balsa triangle stock in that corner joint from top to bottom.

Thanks Tom, I actually removed the whole firewall and know in the process of reinforcing the whole thing. I will add the tri stock like I thought to do in the beginning, but you know how it is when your anxious to fly you push back those "I should" thoughts and settle for " It should be alright".

Well your decision was reasonable, as deleivered it should have held up. But in the thick of things the guys on the production line try to go too fast and skimp on the glue.
There's really no good non-destructive way to check this either.

My 70 flights must have been 50% hovering My poor DA is getting a full blown workout as is the plane. ill have 40 or 50 hours on it before snow flies at the rate im going. If something is going to fail Ill find it TRUST ME lol. I found this ultimate to be easyer to hover and torque roll than my edge may be my setup on my edge was to conservative but all the same I fell in love with this biplane Ill be replacing this one If it ever meets terra firma in a untimely manor. Thank you again Tom for making this one of my most memerable seasons to date

For anyone looking for an alternative muffler for the MVVS or Evo 58, Bill Morrison makes semi-custom mufflers that are cheaper than the "name" mufflers, and less restrictive. He'll even modifly the can size for you. Here's a picture below of one on an MVVS 58. They run from $75-$100 depending on whether you need the header or not. His e-mail is: [email protected]
BTW, I am in no way affiliated with Bill, I was just looking for an alternative for the MVVS 58 that would be less restrictive so I wouldn't have to use an in-fuse can, and I ran across his mufflers. I still haven't made my mind up whether to go to the trouble of installing a canister(which I already have) or go with one of Bill's mufflers.

Hey guys, just wondering if someone can give an update on how your making out the the 58?? I'm thinking i'm gonna want one of these for my next project. Couple questions too, Cheif Aircraft are advertising a muffler for these engines, will they work ok? Also what prop did you start with, I had read that a Bolly 23 X 10 was a good place to start.
Thanks Alot

A 24x10 will give you a bit better mid range "grunt". The 23x10 will spin up a couple hundred RPM higher, but you should take advantage of the engine's power curve and pull a bit bigger prop. The Jtec muffler works well on the 59 as well if you want a firewall forward solution,

We did the prototype muffler work for Horizon on the Evolution/MVVS engines for OEM. We make several different styles of mufflers from your basic box at 49.99 to several pitts styles ranging from $89.99 to $139.99 depending on how quiet you need to be.
Basically they are made when ordered so if some modification are need for you plane we can usually do something for you. If you want a firewall mounted unit all we need to know is how much room you have.
Thanks

As far as power and reliability, how would you rate this motor?is there another single cylinder engine thats comparable in size and power? Is it much more powerful then say a G62 or Q75?Just wondering,im getting my X-mass list ready, aswell as another build and this motor is on my mind,i was close to purchasing one a month ago,but after talking to my LHS was undecided cause no one i know had any idea if there dependable and how much power they have. Thanks for any info.

What length standoffs are needed for this engine with one of the 28%ers?
Oh, and are 10-32 bolts enough to hold it to the firewall with? I was thinking of getting some standoffs made that are tapped with 10-32 for the engine to standoff and 1/4-20 for standoff to firewall.

28% what? Different length standoffs are required for pretty much every single different plane, even among types within the same brand. On my KMP Yak no standoffs were needed for either the MVVS 58 or 45 since both have the exact same mount to prop flange measurement(and bolt pattern too).
