Hey guys! Sorry I've been MIA for a bit. Bad news first... Unfortunately my Phoenix Extra 330 bit the dust due to it's pilot exceeding HIS design paramaters . Our field is just a bit odd. For about 200 yards the length of the runway, we have trees about 150 yards out directly across and to the north. From about mid field all the way out to the west, it's wide open for nearly a mile. Anyway, as this plane was finally tweaked just the way I liked it, I started experimenting and got myself too far away, and behind said trees and lost orientation. Actually lost it for a whole day (after the crunch), but did locate it and rescue all but the tail section, so, a couple of servos gone to the RC gods. In actuality we were looking much to close. I actually, "almost" saved it. It was out further and oriented in the correct attitude (not the inverted one I "lost" it in), and it was up in a tree on the next rise.

The good news is I've bought another one, and will be diving back in real soon.

Let me tell you, I lucked out and the engine went between two major trunks, so no damage there. Altough the rest of the plane was toast, I was still impressed at how well it held up over all. This was a Italian ST90 at full throttle, and even though the nose section from the cowling forward was one piece, the firewall held up well, and even the wings, though broken at impact pints, still was quite sturdy.

This bird, isn't built quite as "cheaply" as I thought.

See you "up there" soon!

Im gonna chime back in too for a bit. I have still kept my subscription to this thread although I havent been flying this bird so much.......

So I intend to fix that problem. I have a pretty blue box that the brown santa brought me today....just for my extra....... an O.S. 1.20 ax....!!!

I've never been totally satisfied with the .90 sk in my extra, and now I will fix that. I have a Seagull Edge 540 that is very similar to this bird that has a 120 ax on it..... and I just love it. Stupid fun!!! Now Im gonna make this one stupid fun too.

I am also going to raise my wing's trailing edge up 1/8" per cmoulder's recommendations. I hope to make this plane as enjoyable to fly as my other one. I hope the wing mod will make for better landing tendencies.....and the engine mod will definatley make for awesome punch out!!

I hope to get this done in the next week or so.

Heres a couple pics of the extra and the edge. The engine shown is the 1.20 on the edge. Im anxious to get this thing back in the air!

One more thing. My cg seems to be good where it is at..... where does everyone else run theirs??

Danny, I hate to hear you lost your extra. I hope all goes better for your next one. Since you have a busted up wing on hand I wonder if I could ask a favor. Can you get a close up picture of the shear web material? I am curious whether or not it is just balsa (with grain in the wrong direction) or some of that funky soft plywood they use in this plane. Also, can you tell how far out the shearwebs go?

Since I started posting on this thread long after you had finished your Extra, I never had a chance to complement your covering/trim mods. Now that you have reposted some pictures-I’ll say, she looks good man[8D]. The pattern on the bottom looks good as well (shown in original post).

What prop do you expect to run on the 120? How does your Edge 540 compare to this one in weight and wingspan? In the picture of the 120 on the “Edge†is that a secondary tank for some reason or is that the main fuel tank?

Got my CG at 125mm and it seems pretty good.

Use a bubbleless clunk and you won't need that header tank.[8D]

Bob,

Bubbleless clunk[sm=confused.gif]? This is a new one for me on glow fuel.

When using a header tank like this do you guys start off with it full or somewhere around half full? Is it primarily to avoid the dreaded rich at full tank and lean near empty tank condition? What size tank? I've never run across (obviously never used) this set-up.[]

Thanks,

Bubbleless clunks:

[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXXF25&P=ML]Expensive one.[/link]

[link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD741&P=SM]Cheap one.[/link]

I used to get deadsticks doing hard aerobatics with less than 1/3 tank of fuel. Now, never a deadstick, and the engine runs consistently well down to the last drop.

Bob,

Thanks for the links. I have yet to have the problem you mentioned but there is always a first time and I now know something I did not know yesterday.

Long story on the header tank, but it was removed the day of the maiden of the edge.

My Phx extra with the sk .90 still has a header tank. The purpose is to keep a clunk submerged at all times. I was intitially having alot of running issues with the sk... but after a header tank and blocking off one of the pitts muffler pipes, it runs great now. The motor just needs to be on a 6lb plane... not an 8lb one....

I wont be using the header tank on the extra once the 120 is mounted. I have YET to have a deadstick with that motor on the edge. Through hard aerobatics and all.........I just love that motor. I will be swinging a 16x6 on it.

The edge weighs 9 lbs dry. The motor produces 14lbs of thrust with the 16x6..... kinda fun!

Thanks much for the compliments on the extra!!!!

Oh and one more thing.... I do enjoy both planes....I will be able to make a more accurate comparison between the two once I get the 120 mounted. But I like them both! They are each a bit different but both are alot of fun.

Rick,

I also enjoy discovering new information. Precious little of it, really, and a lot of misinformation.[sm=sad_smile.gif]

Damn...

Wish I read this earlier Rick. You know when you were told to clean your room and never did. Well, I do my work in my garage, and have a couple of other projects taking up bench space, but I really want to get going on the Extra.

Well, last week, I "cleaned" the garage, and unfortuately stripped out all the good stuff, and stepped on the rest.

Sorry...

Its somewhere close to there. I havent stripped any weight out of it either. I run a 16 oz tank with a 2oz header tank. Its not featherweight, but it flies like it is. Well except for the hover part.

I am anxious to try your mod with the wing incidence. Ive always hated how that thing lands. I hope there is marked improvement!

I was just curious what the inside of these wings look like. I am sure that sooner or later I will have a chance to look inside my own wings.

I get to miss out on the maiden []. Though we have a fly-in on sat so im sure ill get something there.

On another note all these pics of pretty planes have made mine, for lack of better words, look boring... I should have spent a little more time. [8D]

In order to keep things in chronological order, here is some baffle work I did on my extra Wednesday and Thursday.

With trial and error fitting I made a paper template to fit in the cowl just in front of the fins on engine cylinder. Once I was happy with the fit I cut it out of 1/32 balsa. I used some pieces of the same to create doublers around the edges. A couple curved pieces across the middle and a couple of air damns running down the sides of the cylinder. Sealed with 5 minute epoxy and painted with Top Flight Luster Coat. Weighed in just over a half ounce.

Here are some shots of the "Extra" just before leaving for maiden. My wife tried to do some video for me. I will see what I have next. It is an analog camera so I have to import edit convert bla bla bla.

I managed a couple of typical non event maiden flights. Still running rich with a 14X6 prop and I will have to adjust the throttle linkages. All in all it was good. I am happy with the small amount of positive incidence that I added to the stab. Only a small amount of down trim required for level flight at half throttle. Which is the same at full throttle on this plane. Damn thing lands nice for me. Cut the throttle and it settles in to a nice descending glide path.

Muffler sounds different. But still doesn’t make it sound like the big boys. Maybe once I get a little more time on the engine and switch to the 15 inch props maybe it will sound a little better.

Very nice looking plane! Glad to hear all went well with the maiden. I really dig the swept checkered flag look. It must have been time consuming. Well worth the effort though! Looks awesome!! Great work!

Stevo,

Thanks, I really liked how it looked.

I’ll post a link to excerpts of the maiden voyage video from Friday evening here once I have finished editing them.

Here is the link about three minutes worth of exerpts of the first two flights Friday night.
