RE: AMR 50 Trainer
Tonight I framed out the left wing section. The toughest part was setting the 1st rib with 1 degree dihedral. After that it was an easy task. The pics are the bare frame, then wit the flaps and ailerons in place then for size comparison a Rascal 110 wing on top of the 50Trainer wing. As you can see the wing on the 50Trainer is much more significant. The wing is tacked together with thin CA at this point. Tomorrow I will add Titebond II glue to all the ribs and let it dry while I am building the right wing.

Nice work, Ron. I've been checking your thread several times a day looking for an update. That plane makes my 8' span bird look like an insect.

Thanks Jack. This thing builds great. The other part of what makes the kit great is the support I have gotten from AMR. Every time I have a question, I email Michel or Vincent and I have an answer within an hour or so. Their customer support is awesome. They listen and respond. It is great dealing with those guys.

Very good job on the left wing Ron. For a guy who is not familiar with kit building, you are doing very well. It is fun to see how big is the wing when we see the Rascal wing beside.

I have noted the support and interest the AMR staff has shown. It will definitely influence my decision when it comes time to buy another big bird to build. Keep posting the pics, I'm watching with great interest.

I have the right wing framed out and it is on the table drying. This is so much easier these days than in the "T" pin and Ambroid days.

Yeah, well at least ambroid didn't burn your eyes and nose like CA does. I almost passed out when I put the CA to my Senior Telemaster wing last weekend.

They now sell odorless CA glue. I think it is from Bob Smith Industries (www.bsi-inc.com). I never tryied it but i guess it could be good to try. What i really dont like about CA glue is the speed at which it stick to fingers skin...[>:]

RE: AMR 50 Trainer
I've read about the odorless CA but never used it. I used to build with CA exclusively because it was so fast. I learned the hard way that fast is not always a good thing. I now use wood glue, like Great Planes Aliphatic Resin glue or Titebond II for most of the building. I still use CA for installing ribs in wing panels though. I set them all with a square and when I know all is straight and square, tack them all to the leading and trailing edges with CA. I use wood glues to install the stringers etc because it gives me more time to make adjustments etc and doesn't knock me out with ammonia odor. The first time I built with CA, I was building a SIG Kobra in 1980 something and I glued my fingers to the fin. I held it in place while the CA set and didn't realize I had some on my thumb and index finger. I had to use my xacto knife and cut myself loose. I didn't have any debonder at the time. Lesson learned. I think skin is the thing CA bonds best. Now that I'm in my 50s, I'm not in such a big hurry all the time.

RE: AMR 50 Trainer
Well the weekend is finally here. Before I got started tonight I thought I would post some pics of the RSC SV-50 with the Bambula prop mounted and the standoff on the engine. I will have to replace the prop bolts that came with the engine. The prop is so thick at the that there are only about 2 threads in the hub. I also took a couple of pics of the 2 wing halves stuck together with the flaps and ailerons laid in place so you can get an idea of the size of this bird. This is as big a trainer as I have seen. Note: ignore the tuna can. Most of the ailerons were hanging off the table so I had to hold them in place with something.
Tonight I plan on adding the stringers to the bottom of the wings, adding the servo trays, installing the wire ways and building up the wing tips.

Last night I laid up the Fuselage sides and laminated the doubler. I used Aliphatic Resin to laminate the doubler to the fuselage side and placed weights over the doubler until this morning. The end result was perfect.

RE: AMR 50 Trainer
The ailerons and flaps use Robart Hinge points so I had to fabricate blocks to support the hinge points. I started with a 3/4 inch square piece of balsa and laminated a piece of 1/4 x 1/2 hardwood to 2 opposite sides making a "T" shape. I then cut 1" long pieces of the assembly and glued them in place with Titebond after marking the hinge point location. I also tacked the servo trays in place with CA. After this all dries I will use epoxy to reinforce the hinge blocks and add supports for the servo trays.

It was 50 degrees today. 2 days ago it was 10 degrees.
Today I reinforced the servo trays, added the wire tubes, built up the wing tips and added the spar webs. It was a long day but rewarding. Also I have been talking to the guys at AMR about lengthening the wing joiner to penetrate 2 rib sections rather than 1 on each wing. These guys listen. They are sending me a new longer wing joiner. I boxed in the 2nd rib section on the wings today also for the longer joiner.

This morning I finished rouging out the sheeting, leading edge and wing tip. There were no surprises here other than my lack of skill since I such a noob. In every case the second wing half is better than the first. Thank God for filler. I ordered the fairing putty epoxy from American Spruce.

I finished shaping the leading edge , rough sanding and capping the ribs on the left wing. It is finally taking shape. The pile of Balsa is almost gone and the end is in sight. Tomorrow I will complete the shaping and rough sanding of the right wing then move on the hinging the controls.
