Hobby knife cap issues
I have several perfectly good hobby knives that I’m gonna throw away just because they are missing their caps.
If I’ll not throw them away I’ll keep wounding my self hitting them with my fingers.
My tools drawer is like a hole with lurking scorpions because of these knives.
Do you have some idea how to secure or replace these caps?
Thanks
Alex

RE: Hobby knife cap issues
I didn't hurt my fingers, but my experience was also painfull until I made sure to push on the clear plastic cap each time i was finished using the knife. It took two instances of the knife rolling off the bench and sticking in my foot for me to remember to put the cap on. It seems that more times than not, the knife will fall with the blade pointing down.

Yes so far it missed my feet while falling but I cannot count on that miracle, it does fall blade pointing down.
I thought of gluing the cap with a wire strip but its no comfortable to work with it this way.

LMAO,
This made me remember when I was a kid building a Comet kit and I was sitting at my work bench looking all over for my x-acto knife when I finally found it sticking up out of my leg, never even felt it stick me and it was buried to the handle.
I have to admit to this day I never use the caps, I put the knife nose down into a cup.
Later!!

Alex,
If you're like me, you have one of those tool holders on the wall, behind your work bench. Get some 3/8" surgical tubing from Ace Hardware. Cut a 4" segment for each knife with no cap. Put fish line through the hose, tie it to the hose and to the tool holder.
Now slide the knife into the hose, and let it hang. You'll never lose that hose.
Best wishes,
Dave Olson

RE: Hobby knife cap issues
When I started shopping for tools I didn't like the standard hobby knives very much because of the totally round handle.
I saw the 'Excel' brand at the hobby shop and noticed it has a hex shape at the end of the handle so it does not roll. I bought the Excel.
I've since seen other brands with the same design. The Revell brand has one for $2.49 which is the one in the picture. It is currently out of stock at Tower

A slightly more expensive one, with soft grip, is in stock

It appears to be identical to the Excel.

I usually reverse the blade, but have also used a chunk of soft balsa, wine corks and pen caps. To solve the rolling knife turned javelin problem, you can glue a balsa stick to the side, drill through the end and insert a screw, or get some of the triangular pencil grips from Staple/Office Max/etc

Consider getting a Swann Morton 'Retractaway ' holder which takes scalpel blades (10A etc ) www.craftknives.co.uk/products/retractaway.html or the USA agent http://www.cincinnatisurgical.com/li...&item=crhandle This retracts the blade into the handle yet holds it as firm as a normal scalpel without play. Not much more cost than a normal scalpel, and the blades are the super sharp type not the hobby knife type.

I really like the sticking it into a piece of foam best personally, plus it makes it easier to find once you get used to it. The non roll idea can pay off if you have a slanted artisit table...
