Default rimfire problem

i have a rimfire brushless motor on my flatana and have only flown it once with the rimfire on it but many times with the stock mototr. earlier today i was gonna fly it and plugged in the fully charged battery(3 cell 640 mah from electrifly)to the esc (Bl-8) and then i gave it a little bit of throttle to power it up .. then after like 2 seconds of low power i gave it full power (while holding the plane) and it went to full throttle for 5 seconds or so then it started to slow down with out me moving the stick. it started slowing down until the power got to where it wouldnt even hover and then i put the stick back to full off for the motor and them full throttle then it did it again and it slowly went back down.Iam running a 10x3.5 prop on it so i thought of putting a smaller prop on it but that didnt help very much either it just took a lil bit longer for the plane to lose power but nonethe less the plane still lost pwer can someone help me.//???do i need to just return the bl8 esc and get an esc that can handle mor amps like 12 or 15???

Did you check the battery voltage? Same thing happened to me with my new foamy/rimfire, I thought the battery was fully charged. Come to find out that after I walked away from the charger it must have blinked off. The time before I let the battery drain to long and the charger won't hold 10 seconds to recharge. Anyway, once it was fully charged it was fine.

i have the rimfire and have had great success with it!!! my success has inspired 4 other of my club member to get on themself, but i am using a very diffrent setup from you. i am using a jeti 8 controller with only a 9x4.7 apc prop. they say not to run over that prop. i run 830 3cell packs. i had the matt chapman cap 580 flatout with this motor and could fly 10 to 15 minutes on the 830 pack with tons of power!!! i also have put this motor on a 10 ounce plane and had great performance even on the heavier plane. i had one friend who bought the same controller as you and had problems very simular, he changed to the jeti 8 and all the problems went away, or u can use a cc10 controller. i have had the problem u are having with an off brand controller on a brushless motor and when i changed to a cc10 the problems stopped

I also have the electrifly ESC....and honestly I hate it. Despite having attempted about 30 times to program it via the instructions, although it gives me the confirmation tones. I cannot get it to accept the programming for a 2cell lipo. The voltage cutoff kicks in before I can fly it because it keeps looking for 3 cell voltages. Perhaps I have a defective unit, but these types of issues have been posted on the forums before, which makes me question the quality of the BL series ESC's

It works fine on a 3cell lipo though.
The Rimfire seems to be a fine motor though. Keep a close eye on that collet though. If the allen screw comes loose, it will come apart in flight. I mean Outrunner housing with magnets, shaft, and prop attached going one direction, and windings and base still attached to airplane.

A few others here, and myself included also had problems with Electrifly lipo's getting really hot or overheating. The discharge rates just arent up to par despite what the label says. Ive gotten mixed responses to this. Some people like them, and some people dont....again its possible that we just got a bad batch so take it with a grain of salt.

Ive not been impressed so far with anything that came out of Electrifly with the exception of the Rimfire motor, its a good motor for the price.

The only thing I can suggest is changing the ESC out to another ESC and see if that corrects the problem. It sounds to me like you are experiencing the same false programming issues that Ive had. A quick ESC change will quickly let you know if the ESC is the problem.

Now that I have received my second setup, mine works like a champ. I picked up a couple 2-cell lipos but have not tried them with the BL-8, figured I would use my Poenix 10 with the 2 cells, less weight.

This is my first post here on RCU.

I am a Heli guy with a few Raptors.

I have just broke down and bought my first plank. Its a GP's Flatana. I went the brushless route with the Rimfire and the BL-8. A friend of my who got me into these things has 4 of them all with the Rimfire setups. I havent had any problems what so ever with my setup. I plugged my esc into my Hitec 4 rx, then into the wiring on the Rimfire. Plugged in my Polyquest 1100 mah, 3S lipo and I was ready to rock.

This airplane rocks !!! As long as you dont wreck it to bad, it does seem to fly better with alot more epoxy and some of that 3M reinforced clear packaging tape in the right areas.

As far as the Rimfire or the ESC problems you guys are having. My buddy has had one bad engine and one bad BL-8 ESC. He sent both back to GP's and had both of them replaced for Free!!!

Good Luck,
Rick

If you are having trouble programming the BL-8, there was a batch made in the latter part of June that was defective - would not store any program changes. They replaced mine under warranty no problem.

Now for another problem I have with the Rimfire motor/BL-8 controller. I have the motor, the recommended 9x3.7 APC prop, BL-8 controller. The motor sort of stutters back and forth a little and then will sometimes start turning the prop, sometimes just stops. Pull the throttle back down, and try again and it does the same thing. After it start turning, throttles up and down just fine as long as you don't let it come to a stop again. Have tried different receivers, different transmitters, two lipo and even a nicad battery pack. Tried it with and without servos on the receivers. Same results each time.
Sent the motor and esc back and they said it worked fine. Anyone had any problem with RF getting into the esc, or any similar problems?
Have run the motor on a Jeti Advance 18-3P controller with no problems.
I'm probably going to change to at least a 10 amp controller anyway - don't know why they recommend an 8-amp for that motor.

I bought a Flatana and seem to be having a problem with my BL-8 ESC as well. When I pulled it all out of the box & plugged it in it worked a couple times on the table & then when I mounted everything the ESC/Rimfire doesn't even beep when I plug the battery in. It's as if it's just fried...
I called GP & they want me to send it in for them to test. Man, that stinks now I'll probably be waiting a couple weeks before they get around to sending a new one.
I am also using a Futaba micro receiver & if I plug a battery directly into it, it works fine so I'm guessing it's within the ESC/Rimfire setup.
