Giles versus others in 3D

Guys, I need some input from you who have experience with the Giles 200/202. I am looking into purchasing the Wild Hare Giles but I really want to know how the Giles in general stacks up to its' competitors such as the Edge, Extra, and Cap when it comes to 3D performance. I've heard talk that the Giles is a better pattern plane but I like the looks and I'm really into 3D (i.e.- Harriers, Torque Rolls, Water Falls, and Elevators) Will the Giles perform these well? I know many planes are more suited for certain flying styles and there are rumors on others that they will not perform 3D well at all. I shot a hole in one of these rumors when I started 3D flying my little Carl Goldberg Ultimate. That plane is amazing with the proper setup. Video soon to come
. Anyway, please give me some input on the Giles if you can. Thanks!!

From: Chicago,
Kevin, please help me understand this 'proper setup' for the Ultimate for 3D. I'm getting ready to build one and want to get it right first shot if I can. What motor/prop, where's your CG, which servos and throw rates? Thanks a bunch for you time and help.
Regards,
Jim

Kevin...
The Giles is not much of a 3D plane. The Extras and Edges excell at 3D, but the Giles is a great IMAC plane. Ive owned one giles, and flew some others....and they dont 3D very well at all. I have owned about 12 Extras....and loved them all. Id go with an Extra or an Edge.

The idea that a Giles is not good 3D plane is nonsense. I had a Godfrey 202 that was a very good 3D plane and a Carden G300 that was even better at 3D. Jason Shulman had a post on the SA list rating the different airframes in a generic manner. The Giles was the only one that was an A- or better in both precision and freestyle/3D. He rated the Extra better at precision but not for 3D. Now the designer of a particular plane you are looking at can help or hinder the 3D performance. I've not flown or even seen the Wild Hare Giles. So I can't comment on it's ability.

Different manufacturers fudge so many variables on Giles, Extras, Edges, Caps, Sukhois, Yaks...., that they can make them fly any way they want.
Just pick a plane that looks good to you, look at different brands of that plane and talk with owners until you find the right one.
For good 3D look for light wing loadings, big elevators with a smaller fixed stab area, big rudders, big ailerons that extend closer to the fuse for better use of prop wash, longer than scale tail moments for pitch damping with the big elevators and tall fuse for better knife edge flight.
Not all planes will have all of the above but pick whats important to you and look for those features.

on the whole Adrian ... hear hear !
much boils down to the definition and interpreatation of 3D though....theres 3D fun fly and thers 3D aerobatic.... for me its 3D aero.... ive had enough of fun fly and hovering all day without any precision...
TOC aircraft are 3D aerobatic and anything that can emulate them at a smaller scale is in my view 3D aero.

There is a review on the Wildhare Giles in the current issue of RC Report...They loved it! Said it would do all the 3D stuff and IMAC type stuff. I trust them.
