You're right as to price but for availability sometimes you don't have the choice. In this case you do. Thanks to this forum and active modelers we can keep each other informed. Thanks Lou

I am putting my UCD together and noticed the wing trailing edge had a noticeable anhedral. When pulling a line across the bottom trailing edge there was a 3/8 inch space at the center. Anyone else notice or have this? I haven't checked with gp to see if this is suppose to be there. Just wondering. Already have the ailerons installed. Plan to go with it. Hope no adverse effects or affects!! Lou

Hey guys,
I got my UCD a few weeks back, my wing suffered the same fate as allot of yours, I had one crushed rib, I decided to just fix it myself rather than wait. My question is I used Du-Bro pinned hinges rather than the CA hinges as Ive read allot of peoples hinges are cracking on this plane, I didn't want to chance it. I have sealed the bottom of the ailerons, elevators & one side of the rudder. Should I do both sides of all surfaces? I don't plan on flying it fast at all, but those are some mighty large surfaces!! I also put a little more tri-stock on the landing gear block, & am going to try to get a little bit of 30 min. down there also. I peeled back the covering under the tail, added a piece of 1/8 lite ply for a Sullivan tail wheel assy. I didn't trust the one that came with the kit. Anyone have any other suggestions I missed? (took me about three days to read all the post's here!!)
Thanks, Billy

Make sure you change your pushrods to 4-40. Others have had the 2-56 rods bend. None of the UCD3D's in my club (4 of them) have the hinge gaps sealed. The gaps are pretty tight though.
One thing we've noticed is that the bottom edge of the wheel pants takes a beating and cracks quickly develop (we're on a paved runway) You may want to put some glass cloth or carbon fiber around the inside edge.
2 of us have switched the cowl mounting screws for 6-32 or 8-32 nylon bolts with tapped holes in the blocks. Haven't come out yet.

I have a hard time keepingg the wheelpants tight on my UCD. Maybe my YS120SC swinging an apc17x6 puts a few more vibrations through the plane than the 90-91 size engines many use. I do balance my prop, and I don't use a spinner. I have put CA in the screws that goes into the wheelpants/light ply einforcement, but to no avail. I am just removing my wheelpants and saving them for if somebody wants to buy my UCD. I am also doing something else that I have never done before he he, I am removing some of my tail ballast. I've been fling this plane so tail heavy (pitches up good when flying inverted) that the landings can be and often are a bit hard on the plane.

olmanbruce,
I run a YS120SC, swinging an apc17x6 at 9500, very fast vertical ha ha, Hovers at about 1/3 throttle, sounds like just above idle. When does your Saito flood? If it's just between fueling and starting, just pinch the line with some forceps, it it floods when taxying out to the runway, and idle is adjusted right, yep, then I guess you'll have to movve the tank. I am purely YS when it comes to 4-strokes, so you'll see me recommend those engines all the time ha ha.

Captinjohn,
I've got a RCS 1.40 mounted on mine and it fits great, unfortunately I'm not finished putting the plane together yet so i cant tell about how well or bad it will fly, I've been waiting for three weeks on some servos i ordered for this plane and am still waiting. when its together i will post some pictures

Supertiger: Thanks for the reply. I cannot wait to hear how it flys. Good luck and don,t get the airspeed to high. It sure should hover easy. If there is a lot of shake in tail-feathers you may want to use tail braces... non metalic. Best Regards C.J.

Oldman: Dont go buy a YS, your Saito will power this model just fine. I havent gotten my UCD yet, but I just bench ran the Saito 100 - wow, what a great motor. yes, it does seem picky about where the fuel tank is, but if you have the tank center centered to carb, then you may just have the low end needle set too rich. I bench ran it inverted to see if it could be finicky, and it was some, but like I said, if the tank is placed properly, then its just a needle problem, adjust it like the owners manual says and the problem should go away - if not, a pump/regulator will solve the problem for sure, and save you big bucks. My Saito was spinning a 15x8 at 8500 RPM, still set way rich, I'll take that with the full pound of noseweight savings and the lack of tailweight, the ability to put after run oil in the motor, not having to send the thing in for a new diaphragm every other year, not spraying myself with fuel when I pull the wrong plug, not dealing with a really finicky needle vavle, not splitting fuel tanks, not hunting down annoying fuel system leaks that make the motor go WAY lean (read another trip to service department), hoping I wont have to send it back to the shop when i get it back from the shop because it still doesnt run right - again, any day and bet it flys way better than the YS 120. But hey its just me. Dont get me wrong, I'm a big YS fan, I've owned 5 of them, sold 4, still have 1 (and it needs a new diaphragm)
, nothing beats the raw power of those motors, but for the UCD, I think I can deal with a half throttle hover instead of a 1/3rd throttle hover....

didn't like mean to start a bashing of any sorts, didn't even think I bashed anything (Saito). Funny how I read again and again all this maintenance crap that's needed for YS engines and yet, I've never had to do any of it. I don't use after run oil, yes, I make little changes on the high end needle when weather dictates it. A Saito 100 weighs 21 oz with muffler, my YS120SC weighs 32 oz, that's not 1 pound different. My tank is mounted on CG, no changes to flight characteristics during flight, no fuel draw problems. Yes, I thought about putting a YS91AC on the plane, but what can I say, I didn't believe it would satisfy my thrust to weight ratio craving.
Hey, I did not put down Saito, I just promoted YS, there's a difference you know. The Saitos are fine engines, they are just not a complete package like the YS, unless you have the freedom to mount them and the tank just the right way.

I just buy em two or so at a time, and have four years worth...they take ten minutes to change out....
Or are we talking about different things? I'm talking about the pump silicone thingys....
$10....no shop charge
As an aside, anyone having trouble with an inverted engine might want to try an onboard glow driver....
Cheers!

I had my saito 91 running inverted w/ no problem. I pulled it off though. not enough vertical pull. I now have a ST90 2stroke mounted inverted. I haven't flown it yet. But I have ran a tank thru it, inverted and it doesn't seem like its going to have a problem.
I pulled the saito because vertical was lacking, it would pull out of a hover but very, very slow. I am problably like, DKJens, Iwant to be able to lauch out of a hover, not crawl.
I haven't had a chance to tach my ST90 w/ a 15x4W prop. But my saito 91 was only peaking it out at 9200-9300. and I had it set to fly at 8800. I am sure that the ST90 w/ stock muffler will atleast do 10,500. I am in the process of putting a moosecan on it. If the moosecan gives me the extra 1500-2000 RPM like it does on my other motors. That should put me in the 12,500 RPM range. That is 3700RPM increase in power. That is approx 30% increase in power over the saito91. That pretty good for a $50.00 motor that I picked up at a swap meet. Not bad.
