FlyinBlind, I'm with you on the 120-sized UCD (as long as it has a two-piece wing)! They could probably sell a bunch of Fuji gas engines with it!
Now, everybody go the the Great Planes web-site and "suggest" this as a new plane (there is a button there for just that)! Oh, and while you are at it, suggest a 2-meter Venus also!

I'd really like to see a UCD or other 3D plane for the 50cc size gassers. Make it as inexpensive as possible, say around $300-$350. Doesn't have to be a scale anything (Extra, Giles, Edge, etc, etc,) Just a BIG FUN 3D plane that will fly like the 40% stuff. I've noticed a lot of ARF's coming out for the 50cc gassers but their prices are pretty high ($650+).
The GP Patty Wagstaff Extra and the WM Extra are the closest so far. Make it light and BIG (1600+ sq in and under 15 lbs).
Meanwhile, I'll just keep flying the pants off the UCD (yes the wheel pants are trashed from too many nose high harrier landings).

The Iron Bay regulator looks pretty sweet, however I have not heard of the company nor have I heard of how well they work. I use the cline on mine with a Saito 100 and it works perfectly.
As for the guy who said that all UCD's build tail heavy I'd strongly have to disagree. I have never seen a UCD build tailheavy. It seems like almost everyone that builds one has to fiddle around getting the CG back toward 6". That is the reason that a ton of people move the tank to the CG.
BTW, let us know how that Ironbay regulator works? It's 33% cheaper than the cline so it might be a great option. Of course the support from Jim Cline is worth paying a bit more for the product.

It seems that there were a few that had problems......but the reports are very few now.....most of which are caused by thepilots themselves.....aka flutter. The one failure we had at our club, Great Planes replaced his plane and it looks to be better quality the the first ones. The wing fits tighter and the covering is better.

Airbike, check out the Diablotin series by Esprit Models. I believe they have a 'bigun' for gas engines. However, I think it is quite a bit more expensive than 350-450.

I noticed someone on this thread couldn't get a canopy. Well I can't get a cowl. Its been 6 weeks which is WAY to long. Yes I love the UCD. At least I can fly. Dave

Good to hear from you and I hope all is well_bob
I get 27 oz with muffler but with out glow plug.
Are you thinking about useing this engine on the UCDO3D?
I recived the plane when it first came out and have been waiting on the engine ever since, now I have a few other planes to put together before I can start on this one but hope to have it together soon!
Hope this helps

I was wondering if anyone out there has squared off the wingtips on their UCD by adding another rib and extending the wing spars, leading edge and trailing edge. I did that to mine and also built up the leading edge of the end of the aileron which was tapered to match the tapered wing tips. I thought it made a noticable difference in the way it flew. More so than adjusting then CG. Most notably I thought the knife edge was easier. It also seemed to track more true and lost some of its tendancy to pull to the deck while inverted.
I was just wondering what anyone else has experienced if they have tried this mod.

I don't know what I'll put in it yet? I've been flying a friends ucd with a new YS .91 The engine is a dissappointment to say the least. Won't stay running and very inconsistent. Back in my pattern days we ran the 1.20 till the cows came home and it was fine. This .91 thing is a bummer.
I am leaning towards a 2 stroke. When I first started flying profiles, I dialed them in with the Cline regulator and perry carbs and had a blast. Have one left now to stay nimble. Good therapy you know!
Initially I'm going to use what I have laying around in the shopto keep expenses to a minimum. I've seen a couple of inquiries about flying this plane with a .61 What are the finished weights and flying reports with that size engine? Take care_bob

You are right of course, but what about the tank location with an inverted engine? I've never used the Cline on a 4 stroke! Where are you guys putting the pressure fitting, and how much are Saito 100's going for these days? Thanks_bob

This is by far the most common engine used on this bird!

Bob, sorry to hear that your friends YS is acting up. I just did the maiden flight on my UCD w/ YS .91FZ last week and, with the help of our local YS "expert" (thanks Rich!), am VERY impressed with this combination.
While the YS engines are a tad more complicated than other 4-strokes, I think you will find that it is worth it in the end. I'm sure that somebody over in the Engines forum could help you with your (or your friends) problems.

I've had my 3D for a little over 6 months now, and had a lot of fun with it. I'm learning to hover, and (my fellow fliers claim) soon I'll be able to hover at such an altitude that they can see me do it.
I've learned a lot from this forum, and as a primarily warbird flier, the tips I've picked up here have greatly shortcut the assembly, CG placement, and flying technique learning curve for me. Thank You .
But I am mystified by one of the recurrent complaints about the plane on this forum: strength of the gear??? Sure, the gear is kind of light and springy, but come on!, the wing loading on this thing is about the same as two large large bird feathers taped together! How are you guys landing it so as to mess up the gear? Can't you at least stop doing aerobatics for the last 12 inches before you hit the ground!?
