Just ran the engine for the first time with the Iron Bay regulator. I have a Saito 100, fuel tank is on the CG. before the regulator I had the highspeed needle open 1 3/4, Now it's open about 4 turns. Is this normal? Seems to run better, I haven't adjusted the low end yet, it's very close where it was.
Also, for you guys that have the fuel tank on the CG. how many inches is your CG form the leading edge?

one last question, is there anyway to make this thing knife edge nicer?

I've heard that the Knife Edge is improved by shortening the rudder, but I'm not sure about that. Either that, or a ton of mixes in the transmitter....

Definately removing the top of the rudder, down to the fin post, helps take out a lot of the cross coupling

Rajul "Will removing the top of the rudder completely flush to the fin post be better."

Probably, I kept about 1" above for structural integrity and looks. Lowering even further would help even more, I'm sure.

Just got back from the field. I put my tank on the CG and added an Iron Bay Regulator. WOW, the engine runs sooooooo smooth! it starts much better too. a few guys at the field commented about how sweet the Saito 100 runs , they even noticed the difference.

It did dead stick once when I was at idel, I think I have some low end adjusting to do.

Rajul, what did you want a picture of, the engine or the Regulator installation?

Hey John! The plane did run alot better with the regulator. Can't wiat to see how it helps on the Saito 72.

My Saito 100 with a cline reg, runs just under 4 turns out. I always thought this was odd, but possibly not. What I have noticed though, setting the high speed, using a tach, it seems there is a LOT of needle adjustment from peek, till it drops. Backing it off from peek is the same. I start rich, slowly lean it till it peeks, then back 1/8 turn. I have no reference or help here, and I barely get 8 min. to a tank. The low end is lean out also.

C.G 6 1/4 back.

thanks for the imput, my adjustment is the same, I'm flying 15 mins on a tank, mostly 3D hovering at 1/2 throttle

That Ironbay regultor looks nice. Next time I need to buy a regulator I might go that route. It's about $25 cheaper than the cline.

I run the cline on my Saito 100 and I fly about 2.75 turns out. It's rock solid.

Just got my carbon gear from GraphTech. Looks really nice.

Original gear weighs 3.25 oz
Carbon gear weighs 2.75 oz

Not much of weight savings, but it looks so cool and it's super strong!

Well after flying over 10 gallons of fuel through my UCD this summer I finally ripped the landing gear off during a rather rough landing. All of the reports I've seen that said the plane has a terrible block are correct. It won't be hard fix, but it is rather poorly put together. It was bound to happen sooner than later.

I used epoxied triangle stocks, dowel pins and a ply doubler to reinforce my LG. Holding up well.....

Hey Contempo, Did you notice if your carbon gear is narrower then the original?
I just got a set from Graphtech and mine is about 1 &1/2 inches more narrow then my standard gear. Can't get the people from Graphtech to reply to email or phone calls about this.

Where are you guys lining up your ailerons when setting up the plane? The book shows an illustration but it seems like there's some room for error? Thanks_bob

Hi Bob, I used one of the 2-56 rods (which I replaced with 4-40) and taped it down to the edge of the wing tip with masking tape. The rod is automatically lined up exactly with the centerline of the wing chord in this way. The rod is extended 2-3 inches beyond the trailing edge of the wing, so that it acts as a reference line for the aileron. I tape the edge of the aileron to the rod when I am setting up the length of the pushrod. Works great.......

Hi flatspin, if you must go with a two-stroker, try to avoid the OS91FX as it has needle valve issues causing air bubbles. The Saito 100 is highly recommended is you're going four-stroke.

Default Stab to fin angle

Hi guys, I found that my stab and fin are not exactly 90 deg to each other. They are off by about 2 degrees. Will this contribute towards any rudder coupling ? Or is it something insignificant ? What angle are you guys getting when you build it stock ?

Thanks rajul. Seems like this thread is losing it's steam. I bought an in the box UCD, and then found a used one with an OS .61 on which I bought too. Althought the .61 is not a rocket motor, it is adequate for most of the 3D maneuvers. I cannot get it to run consistently (needle valve) so I am replacing the carb with a Perry as we speak. That being said, and having flown it a very little bit, I've found that with the right set up the plane will knife edge rather well. My cg is past the 6" mark and I use a low rate rudder with some elevator mixed in. No aileron mix is needed with my plane. You have to expect some mixing on almost any plane, and I find this one within acceptable limits. Maybe others are using too much rudder which will tend to couple the plane. My 40% Carden Cap will couple in hi alpha knife edge if I don't mix it out. I really like this plane. It's miles ahead of a profile (which I learned 3D on) and is a nice blend between precision aerobatics and wild hoverbatics. If you learn to point roll you will have the building blocks to do many things. From there you can do 4/8 point rolls, rolling circles, k/e passes etc. Although I don't think the mis-alignment is your coupling issue, I would try to correct it the easiest way possible. Not sure if you should do it in the wing or the stab, but do it somehow. Let me know how you make out, and what kind of coupling you are getting. Take care_bob
