Hey Jens if the Madness won't roll for ahhh not too good then what good is that plane? I flew my buddys and was grossly unimpressed with it. The plane is highly overpriced and terribly limited in what it can do. Am I missing something here? I don't know what the appeal is of these types of planes. I still think a good Edge or an Extra is capable of so much more in the air. I still have the Magic 3D I bought from you a year ago. I cut the tips off of the plane and I thought it improved its abilitys. Mike

For those who have already built their ucd's - do you think it is worth upgrading the control horns to mk's and putting a pull-pull rudder system in? Or do you think the stock GP hardware is adequate?
Thanks

Mike,
I fully agree with you on the Madness. I don't have one, but have seen one at my field, with a YS63FZ on it. Another thing I noticed on the Madness is, that the main wheels are so far forward of CG, that it puts alot of weight on the tail wheel, which is quite weak. I told the owner out here, that if he wanted his rudder to survive any amount of time and especially Harrier landings, to put a more heavy duty tail gear on it. What I said about the roll rate of the Madness, is purely from reading threads here on RCU.
I personally like these types of planes, low low wing loading, most flying is very low, very slow and very close. That is also why I like the plane not to cost to much, since they have been known to Waterfall into the runway he he. I have a 30% Cap231EX ARC here I need to finish, and a ZDZ80 for power, should be fun too, but the Pucker factor will be much higher.
Davey,
I used the control horns that came with the plane, but 4-40 rods and Du-Bro lockable clevises and ball swivel clevises. I see no need to modify to pull-pull on rudder, unless you bevel the control surfaces for more movement, which is not necessary on this plane.

I've seen a Madness fly and it is really capable. I saw it do pretty much everything without a problem, WITH wing tips strangely enough, (I know, beats me!!!) The Madness is in my book, the godfather of these type of planes, everything else is a near copy. Oohhhh, and it can roll, quite nicely too, and all this is with a pilot who is nowhere near a hot shot!!!! I think that the guy who designed world championship models might just know a bit more about designing.

for those guys flying with a 91 fx 2 stroke, what are you doing about all the fuel that gets on the servos??
since mines down for repair/rework, i was consdering changing over to a mk bellcrank and moving the rudder servo over to the right.
has anyone found a better solution??
thanks,
tony

Karl,
I aggree with you. I could see it from the get go, that this plane is just to big for a 91 anything. As posted earlier, I put a YS120NC in mine, the tank is moved back to right over CG, the throttle servo and Rx is right in front of trailing edge, battery is in fuse just in front of the single forward servo in tail (I cut a door and taped it shut). I don't know where my CG is right now, but it's not nose heavy any more. I am bringing lead to the field this Saturday, because I like my planes tail heavy, but this plane does need a 120 minimum.
By the way, you've got balls hovering that low with somethinf you have to "fly out of a hover".

I just ordered the plane with a YS91. The local 3D expert at the field has that combo, and he has pleny of power to pull out of a hover. Are you at high altitude Karl? What prop are you using?

Me and my buddy ordered one and it came in yesterday. Man, that is a bad plane!!! It is huge!! Like a 1/4 scale. Whatever you do, don't buy it with a .61 b/c I don't think it will pull it. We bought a OS .91 FX. We are putting it together as I speak and it's maiden voyage will be Sunday!!! I will post a result later.

the elevation at the field is about 400', using 20/20 fuel ,15/6apc, i tried a bunch of props this seemed to work the best. the u-can flys out of the hover up but its more like a crawl.i did move the cg 1" back. i think a little more power would be a lot more fun. Karl

Just finished building my UCD. Will fly this weekend.
SPECS
Engine : Saito 100 w/cline regulator
Prop : APC 15x6
Fuel : Cool power 10%
RPM : 9300 (flying mixture)
Battery: 1650 NiMH
Servos : All JR DS368's except rudder (DS9411)
Weight : 7.0 lb dry
CG : ~5 1/8 back from LE
Modifications :
o Didn't install wheel pants or belly pan (belly pan installation with 5 min. epoxy to monocote would fall off in 10 flights)
o 4-40 hardware except 2-56 throttle. Rudder pushrod is CF.
o Fuel tank moved over CG. I tried it out and the cline regulator is great! I can hold the plane at idle, half, or full throttle nose straight up for 20 seconds and the RPM's remain exactly the same as with the plane sitting.
o Nylon hinges on the ailerons
o Aluminum spinner

basmntdweller:
OS 91 FX weight according to Tower website:
Weight: 550g (19.42oz) 24.3 oz w/muffler
But I think weighing it yourself would be more accurate.
And I think you can get a lighter and more powerful muffler for the 91FX, like the Mac black cigar muffler, Jett muffler,...

I know what the engine weighs! I wanted to know what a completed U Can Do weighs with an OS91FX ready to fly. I saw one quote I think on towers site that said 7.2lbs. I want to know what it really finishes out at.
Thanks,,,Basmntdweller
I should probably try to be clearer when I ask a question!

Sorry about that, basmntdweller,
Another guy with a Saito 100 comes in at 7 lb 6 oz. So with the 91 FX w/ stock muffler being 4 oz heavier than the Saito 100 w/ muffler, you are probably looking at 7 lb 10 oz. At any rate, it ought to be less than 8 lb dry. If you use 15x4W, which the 91FX should swing over 10,000 rpm, it should fly out of hover quite comfortably w/ over 15 lb of theoretical static thrust.

My second one weighs 8lbs even with YS 91ac using my wal mart electronic fish scale. How much right and/or down thrust is anyone using? With 2 small washers giving rt thrust, plane wants to pull left a little on long uplines, also when hovering and go to full throttle, wants to pull to canopy slightly, thought I might try some down thrust, and also try to get the cg back some more by moving the battery to the rear of the fuse
