Don't waste your money on a motor to do 3D with a 4*. Use the motor you have and buy a 3D plane. If you have a 40, get a Ultra Stick. It will do some 3D stuff and a hell of a lot better plane then a 4*.

I'v actually seen a video of a Torque Rolling 4* but the pilot was a professional.
The 4* series is a great line of plane exspeically a 2nd plane but less than desirable for 3D exspeically a 3D trainer

I had 4* 40 with 46FX and 12x4APC stock control areas, It could hover but not pleasent, not easy and does not look good.
It could hover but forget the pull from hover, it just hangs there at WOT.
I don't know how your flying experience but this if this is your 2nd 3rd plane, it is a really nice plane to fly after trainer.
with semi-symetric airfoil, it is not for 3D.

newbtoRC, Not sure what 4* you have but I have the 4*60 with a Mag 91 4c
with the APC 14X4W prop and my 4* hovered very good with pretty good
pullout, She K.E. pretty good also once I mixed the pull to the belly out...
My 4* was all stock except for C/F pushrods and large arms also on the tail
heavy side... But she stays home a lot now... Having a lot more fun, and all
is a lot eaiser to do with my UCD 46/YS63... It's a blast...

If you've got a .46 and you wanna learn how to hover, get a cheap profile. I've got a Twist and it hovers not too bad. Not the greatest but a profile would be cheaper and tougher.

a p-51? no, a P-51 will not hover
the 4* can hover...but it is tough....
if all you want to do is hover, get a Ucando or a twist or magic...or one of the OMP profiles...........

I agree, the 4* isn't designed for 3D, but that doesn't mean you can't make it do 3D stunts with a little mods.
I have a 4*60 kit I built years ago with a YS .91FZ (supercharged 4-strk) spinning a APC 15x6. I added 1" to the elevator and rudder. Pull-pull on the rudder, dual elevator servos, I made the rudder with a counter balance tip on top also. I didn't add any to the ailerons though. I mainly hover and torque roll this plane and it do it fairly easily, but not as easy as my Funtana S 90. I added/created a motorized candy drop/parachute drop section controlled by a servo up front also. I have a total of 7 servos in this bird.
It is really cool to see the plane flying around and dropping candy then all of a sudden seeing it knife edge and torque roll all within the same flight.
I wouldn't buy this plane expecting it to be a 3D plane. This was my 2nd plane years ago, but I still love the way it flys.

ynv50, I think you mean rolling circles and rolling harriers. Took me a long time to get those down. It's all about timing. The 4* with the dehedral doesn't like to do it, but if you remove the dehedral, it is better. Also, if you remove the outter wing bay on each wing, the roll rate will increase, but makes the plane land faster and it doesn't float as much due to the increased wing load.

DTB, thanks that was quite helpful. The engine was the 51 i was talking about. Ringed supertigre G51. Will it be enough to pull it? I just want to hover mainly. No mods, just hang it on the prop when i get bored. I don't want to extend anything either because i still wand a little speed.
I also have a parachute drop on my plane, Mine is more simple though. It is a cup which i put the parachutes in, go inverted and they are gone.

newbtoRC, If you have the 4*60... I do not think the 51 will be enough??
And to just hover the stock setup will do it, with enough low end grunt
powerwise.. Oh and get rid of the stock rods for better ones...

Also, IMO 4-strks are better for hovering and 3D stunts due to the low end torque that they have which allows you to swing a bigger prop which puts out more prop wash. 2-strks produce their power in the upper RPM range which is good for speed. The G51 with a 12.25x3.75 would work well if it can spin it. The 51 isn't as strong as a OS .46FX or AX. Sorry [
] Oh, I just re-read you post and you are talking about pull out power. I'm not sure what type of pull out you are looking for, but the 51 should pull a 40 size out ok but no rocket out of a hover, you would want a .61 on a 40 size for a rocket pull out.
BTW, even with my extened surfaces, my plane is still fast. A buddy is a policeman who radared my 4*60 at 116 mph. I was shocked that it was going that fast because I don't have it setup for speed, but the YS is a very strong motor. Since it is supercharged, it has the power of a normal OS, Magnum or Saito 1.20 size 4-strk engines.
If you are going to be going for speed and have larger control surfaces, you need to make sure that your mechanical advantage is at the servo and not the control horn which could cause flutter. I try to make it a habbit of having proper mechanical advantage regardless.
Your parachute drop system is simplier than mine, but you didn't get a headache trying to set it up either did you? hahaha... My head still hurts due to the servo is located where the other servos are located in the fuse, but operates the hatch up front with the pivot point in front of the hatch also. Not very easy to think up, but I got it to work although it wasn't the easiest thing to come up with.

I fly my 4* with a super tiger 51 on the nose...as far as the pull out power...never tried hovering ..it will hang on the prop for a bit ..it will go straight vertical when asked...has more than enough power to fly it the way it was meant to fly...as far as the 51 not being as gutsy as the 46 ax ..i know that the 51 will turn the same prop at a much higher rpm 11000 vs 13000 plus...other than that ..MTC

Just go to www.swanyshouse.com and buy the MOJO 40 kit. It will fly easier than a trainer on low rates. Turn the rates up and you have a wild 3D machine. I've had a 4*-40. It don't 3D. I wish I would have gotten a mojo before a 4*. Plus the ST 51 will be perfect in it. My Mojo 60 is like a kite. It just hangs in the air forever. You almost have to force it to land. Prop hanging is a breeze. I'm learning fast and not that great of a pilot. Flat spins are the flattest and decend so slow I could land doing a flat spin. ha............JUst my .02
