Default RE: 3D simulators?

ORIGINAL: GPSpacewalker

I had G2, but updated to AFPD. I don't fly 40%'s so I turn the sim speed up and add weight to the plane to get them to feel like my 25% ers. There are a couple planes out there that are a hand full when sett-up correctly (Black Extra and Katana). I like that there are new planes available all the time with no additional cost.

Kyle W, still uses G2 and can do all the 3D stuff on it, but I could not get the planes to act right with it.

I cannot imagine learning to fly without a simulator. The stick time on a sim wires your brain so you don't have to think about the sticks when you fly(there are plenty of other things to think about when flying). About 4 years ago I picked up a cheep sim called RCpilot from Tower for $60.00. I put about 30 hours in on that flying the most challenging plane with crosswind, practicing only take offs and landings. The first time out I soloed in a 10mph wind with my trainer.

I think of all the stick time I have, at least 75% of it is on a simulator. If you only get air time once a week it is a great way to wire your brain so that your field time is a lot funner.

I flew G2 for about 2 months before i got my trainer, I soloed my first day ever at the airfield. I have only been flying for one year and 6 months and i fly intermediate in imac and have 2 first place and one 2nd place wins already this season. And I can do most 3D moves pretty low and decent without sweating it. I blame all that on G2 and G3, bc when im not at the field or school im usually on the sim or flying a foamy!!!! Nothing can beat the latest sims besides real life.

Thanks for all the input. I learned to fly without a sim. I flew 3D planes with my Futaba Attack4 for a while. Just try to fly without ANY expo. I am leaning toward G3, but haven't decided yet.

WOOPS if you lived a little closer to me in VA I would let you come try out G3 at my house I have it on 3 computers so my freinds can come over and we can fly together. Lets see someone do that with AFPD! Flying by yourself is like a long road trip by yourself boring! AFPD might be better I will never know I ordered AFP 1 week before the (deluxe) version was released and no one there felt it was needed to tell me a new version was coming out! Thanks for selling me the (BEST)![:@]

Huddleston is in central VA right beside Smith Mountian Lake. I fly in Bedford VA.

That sounds familiar. What club are you in? How big is your runway?

Va aeromodelers our runway is about 600 feet grass somewhat smooth. They do a pretty good job of keeping it in good shape. Check out www.virginiaaeromodelers.com there are some pics of the field on there.

Default RE: 3D simulators?

IMO G2 was garbage for 3D, even though I could get the stock 540 to hover and TR it was a different type of learning curve to get down than that of AFP or Reflex. I sold G2 after going to the field and trying my skills that I had thought I had mastered using G2 but I was unpleasantly suprised. Then I bought AFP and within 2 weekends I was touching the tail of my real plane on the runway of our field and, I had only practiced for about 3 weeks on AFP. Of course this is just my personal experience but no Sim is going to mimic your plane for real, simple reason we all dont fly identical planes. One Funtana will be set up and fly completly different than another and to copy what a computer has deamed to be "set up to fly" and what you the piliot actually have your plane set up as are prob wayy off. Also as an added effect it is just common sense to add in wind and turbulance ti the sim unless people here fly in a vaccume. Increasing the sim speed as GSP had said is also a big improvment with the hand eye coordination. I am not a fan of G2 and from what I have heard even though G3 has improved there are more unhappy owners than satisfied ones. Also dont discount Reflex again sims wont mimic everything exactly but between the 2 AFPD and Reflex I would say either is a great tool.

no, there are more unhappy customers speaking out then satisfied, there are usually 10 - 20 players online everynight, and always someone new too, so dont give up hope for g3, bc i think its the best you can get, if aerofly delux is better, I would be in awe.

Prepare to be in awe....... AFPD is made by IKARUS who makes simulators for the US armed forces. I dont IMO think G3 can stand on the same shelf as AFPD.

I dont want to start another whose sim is better thread but I like g3 alot, the huge terrain map, the unlimited customizations to aircraft and terrain, the wind physics, slope soaring, multiplayer, the awesome graphics and last but not least the sweet 3D physics! The edge 540 flies almost exactly to my 35% edge for pattern and 3D, i dont see it getting any better, but i could be wrong.

Weather permitting and I am not working out of state I am there flying every weekend. Usually 8 to 10 hours a day. Come on down and burn some fuel with us!

No I am afraid not most of the time they have a Fly-in around September but I am always out of town when it happens. Usually it is just myself and a couple other people there flying so we get alot of stick time!

HE HE im not even getting into this again. What ever floats peoples boat. I have both . ive tried going back to afp. there is Zero challlenge. none of my real planes fly perfecty staight at every angle and none of them have 0 coupling and none of them are filled with helium. so i practice on G3 wich is just as hard if not harder than the real thing so thats what floats my boat. because to me i want to learn with the closest i can get to my real stuff.

i guess the people that dont like G3 etiher
1-dont have a powerful enough computer
2-cant fly it and they want some kind of magic tool that will just automaticly make them a pro flier without suffering the realistic snap, yaws etc.
3-dont have it
4-tried it and didnt give it a chance because they were used to a perfect non snapping, coupling yawing plane simulator wich to me is not very ralistic if that is missing..

Okay, I went with G3. Tower had it for 200 with add ons1 and if you order on the web, you can use a special offer to knock off $25.

I have both, the G3 and AFPD. I use the Aerofly to practice 3D because it is easier. Then see if I can do the same thing on the G3 because it is more realistic. If I had to give one up it would be the G3 if we are taking about 3D only.

If you download some physic models from rick deltens website they are much easier to 3D, but a little less realistic, if you setup a plane just right then it would fly alot like AFP, but of course it wont be the same.

The download 3D planes for G3 are much like thy are for G2. In torque rolls they do not rotate like a real plane or the way they do on the AFPD. The other thing is that the wing loading is so low that they fly nothing like a real model. Don't get me wrong they both have there place, G3 for IMAC or pattern type flying is excellent but the Aerofly deluxe is the best 3D simulator IMO.

It is also recommended that you turn on wind and turbulence in AFPD to better simulate an actual flying experience otherwise flight is glassy smooth. I don't have G3. I really like the physics in AFPD, but their plane editor sucks. And the www user "library" of planes is 99% reskins and mass/cg tweaks. Rather unimpressive.

In the simulator forums almost everyone who has tried both says 3d is better simulated in AFPD for everything from foamies to 33% scale planes. But since it is so hard to edit and tweak the planes to match what I actually own, I wish I had gone for G3.
