Powerline Edge is on the Way

I just ordered the Black and Yellow 40 size Edge 540 from Jag. Should be here next week sometime.
I've got my favorite engine sitting here in the shop waiting for the plane. The TH .75. I'm not sure if I'll mount it inverted or sideways. I have a Bisson Pitts for it--if needed.
How heavy of servos do I need for this plane?
I've got a bunch of Hitec 475 Karbonites and some HS-77 Low Profiles as well as some 425BB standards. Also have HS-225 and a bunch of JR 8411 and various other JR servos from standard DS537 up to some other 80oz coreless types. A couple Airtronics coreless MG--but only about 40oz torque on those. Was thinking about using them for the elevators--but think they are a bit low on torque. Always good for a throttle servo--for the precision.
Pretty good variety of servos sitting here.
Thanks for any comments.

Okay--so 475 on the ailerons. Probably an 8101, 4731, or 4721 on the rudder--just because I got so many and need to use them up. Those are all high torque coreless. Over 100oz at 6V
You think the HS-77 Low Profiles would work if I put 1 on each elevator? They're gonna be about 75oz at 6V.
I usually yank the FW out of these little 40 size planes and replace it with some nice 3/16" hard ply or maybe 1/4" and some bamboo pins and tri-stock. That opens up the front and allows me to get at the tank area. When I mount the engine inverted--I move the tank CL to line up with the carb.
I will take your advice and go inverted on the engine. When I do that--I usually try and run it without any assistance from on-board glow. But, I bought 6 of the RamTek on-board glow units recently--so if it gives me any trouble, I got the cure. Usually--with the tank and carb lined up--I can get away without the supplemental heat from the glow unit.
Using the TH .75 on these little 40 size planes at my altitude seams to be the perfect combination of weight and power for good 3D. The engine weighs less tham most 60 size sport engines and provides the power I need to hover about 6 pounds at 1/2 throttle.

Putting an elevator servo on each half will make it balance too far back. The normal setup with a single rudder and elevator balances best with the battery right on the engine box.

I used the 475 all around, but I think I'm going to order something bigger for the rudder and elevator. I think those 475's were having trouble trying to hold the rudder while doing a knife edge.
Forgot to mention I'm using the HS-475's on 6v.

standard on all surfaces here, only surface using a high toruqe is a rudder, i think i recommend minimum a 90 oz servo for good knife edge capabilities!

Sounds good guys. Thanks for the help.
I was thinking about 2 elevator servos because I'm using a heavier engine than most of you probably are. I'll just have to see how it's gonna balance with the engine and servos.
So, HS-475 on the ailerons. JR- 4131 on the rudder. HS-81 on the throttle. Probably gonna use 2 of the HS-77 LP on the elevators if it will balance. If not--then a single JR-4131 or 8101.
RX is Hitec 555. Hydrimax 1200mah 6V MH battery with Hobbico HD switch and extensions.

This plane just arrived.
WOW!! NICE PLANE!!
I got the yellow/black color scheme. This is one really nice plane. It's lightweight and all laser cut. Removable wings. HUGE control surfaces.
I like it. I like it alot!![&:]
I can't wait to fly it. I gotta finish my World Models Ultimate first. I can't stop working on it and jump on the Powerline Edge. If I don't finish the WM Ultimate--it'll never get done because I can tell that once I start flying this Edge--everything else is gonna sit around and gather dust.
COOL COOL COOL!!

I was finally able to get some good flights on mine today. I got about 8 of them or so. I haven't flown it in less then 10-15 mph winds though, or with the cowling on, and it's also been really nose heavy. I plan on putting the cowling on tonight, but I don't know how much of a difference it will make. I think you're goign to like this plane.

I am seriously considering this plane. Is there anyone else who sells this plane other than Jag. All they have is a yellow one. I really like the green since they said I can't have it. Also, I just stuck a different yellow one in the ground. Bad memories.
What are the pluses and negatives of this plane. I am thinking about a Magnum .91 on it.
Thanks,
dp

Pluses: Good quality, well built, excellent precision, knife edge is superb, 3D surfaces, included hardware is fine except tank.
Minuses: Weight. It was 6 pounds with the YS63. I'd prefer around 5 pounds. Most scale 46 Edges are about this weight from my research.
It takes some cutting to get tank on CG but that's with most planes this size. The Sullivan slant 14 oz is the only one I could get to fit on CG.

I'm putting a TH .75 in mine.
Should be plenty of power.I just can't believe the quality of this plane. It's all laser cut. Plug in wings--just like them bigguns.
HUGE control surfaces. I swear, the rudder is bigger than some 25% planes I've seen. The vertical stab is little bitty. Ailerons have got to be almost 20% or 25% of the wing cord. Elevators are humongous!!!The elevators are bigger than the horizontal stab.[&:]Nice cowling and pants. The hatch cover is SWEET. The whole hatch and canopy comes off as 1 unit. Just like on the WH Edge or the WM Patty. Once you take the hatch cover off---it's wide open inside.
I'm trying to finish my WM Ultimate 40. It's almost done. Just gotta cut a hole in the cowl for my HS needle, and check the final balance.
Then I can start on the Edge. If I don't finish the Ultimate first--it'll never get done.
I can't wait to fly this Edge. I can tell from looking at it that it's gonna be FUN FUN FUN.
I kinda slapped all the airframe parts together and weighed it. It doesn't weigh more than 2.5 or 3 pounds. Add 2.5 pounds for engine, hardware and radio gear. I'm looking at under 6 pounds easy.

The WM Ultimate is DONE!!!
Time to get started on the PL Edge 540.[8D]
I'm gonna be up late. I'll post pics of the assembly. Might not get the pics up untill tomorrow.
The plan:
TH .75 engine--of course. It's my favorite 2-stroke and the best kept secret in the hobby for under $100. Not sure if I'll mount it inverted or sideways yet. Gotta take a look. Most likely inverted. Mounting this engine sideways in a small plane usually means I gotta remove the cylinder head to get the cowl off.
Not my idea of fun.
RX--Hitec 8ch Supreme
1650mah 6V MH battery
JR4721 coreless on both ailerons--about 150oz at 6V
JR9011 coreless on both elevators--about 75oz at 6V. I'm gonna chop the torque rod out and use dual servos. I hate torque rods.
JR8231 digital coreless on the rudder--about 100oz at 6V. Might have to go with an 8411--that thar rudder is purdy big.
Possibly a Ramtec on-board glow system for the engine if I get lazy and don't want to rip the tank support out and lower the tank to line up with the CL of the carb. I'm thinking this is the way I'll go. This is such a nicely built plane that i don't want to cut it open and do surgery on it. I'm getting pretty good at modding ARF's--but they never look perfect. They look pretty darn good, but never as good as from the factory.
Look at my thread on the World Models 40 Ultimate and you'll see that I've modified the wings for aileron servos. Looks darn good--but not factory.
Thats all for now fellas. I got a plane to put together.[&:]

I have the 120 size Edge from Power Line. It is a nice flying airplane. Too bad my Moki 120 died on it about 3 weeks ago. The shaft snapped in half. Glad the engine died on the ground. The plane is in the basement now for the winter and will come out next spring with a Saito 180 or a OS 160. I was flying a Cap 232 and a few others but favored the Edge. The plane would almost land iself. I myself stay away from Karbonite Gears as they tend to be too brittle and break teeth for no apperante reason.

Well, after a 3 month delay, I'm ready to finish this plane. I got wrapped up in a 4*120 kit, and had to set this one to the side. I'm back at it, and can post pics if anyone wants to see the assembly process.
I put the tail surfaces on and put in the servos and linkages for the tail 2 months ago.
I got my engine mounted tonight and installed my tank and Cline regulator. I'm mounting my throttle servo now.

I recently retired my Funtana 40 and moved all the gear (Saito .82, etc..) into a Poweline Edge. This is by far the BEST 40-sized 3D plane I have ever owned or flown! It will do everything and has absolutely no bad habits. Rock solid harriers upright and inverted and its knife edge abilities are great! I love it so much I'm buying another as a backup. Several people were at my club were so impressed they're all buying one as well. A buddy of mine has the new Aeroworks Edge and I thought it flew great.. ..until I got the Powerline Edge! It blows the Aeroworks away and is significantly ligher. I love the plug-in wings, too. I honestly can't say enough about this plane.[8D]

I'm waiting on some longer muffler bolts.
I mounted the engine inverted and installed my cline regulator. Tank on the CG.
I also installed a Ram on-board glow driver for it. It's not necessary with the cline, but the engine fits completely inside the cowl and I didn't want to hack a hole in the bottom for the glow igniter. Makes it easy to start. Nice little gizmo.
With the engine inverted, the stock muffler won't fit on. It exhausts out the left side of the plane now. The fuse is too wide for the muffler to clear. I had a custom exhaust extension made for it. It's 1.25" long. This will put my stock muffler right out the side of the cowl and run it down the left side of the fuse.
I had to order some 4mmx 65mm bolts to get all the way through that extension and bolt up to the engine. Waiting on the bolts to arrive.
The cowl has been mounted and cut out for everything but the muffler.
Ailerons are done. Tail is done. Pilot is done. Throttle servo is HS-81. I scuffed it up with my razor knife and then skuffed up the side of the engine mount as well. Slapped the servo right on the side of the engine mount with some 5min epoxy. Made up a short little linkage rod and it's done.
I just need to mount the muffler. Mount the RX and battery and the switch. Slap a tailwheel on it and balance it.
