Flight and edge report
Ok, first I have found a few weak areas that need beefing up. One is the landing gear. It is ply, but there is not adequate reinforcement in the front and rear. This area have simple blasa and will give. Add, some lite ply and 30 Min epoxy.
second is the fire wall. I glassed it, but the sheeting below is jig locked and needs clue and triangle stock.
The next is the CG. The recommend points are 105 to 124mm. I have to say this is very close to correct. I took my edge to the field to day to put it through extreme flight. I was CG at 140mm. This proved way too much,. I was to say the least haveing some problems and stall. There was a guy wishing to join our cub and meeting me at the field. I had a few scary momment trying a flat spin. He stated wow that was great how do you do that. I laught and told his it was out of control. Stay in the CG range, or should I say not 140mm.
I am going to the field tomorrow after I do some major changes. If I find any more info I will post.
Hope this helps

Anyone notice that they are now offering a combo with the 180 four stroke? I find that quite interesting and would like to hear thoughts on a couple of things...would it be enough power to pull out of a hover? any reserve? would any weight have to be added to the nose? is the ASP/Magnum/Sanye 180 any good? It says it will swing an 18x6, but it doesn't say at what RPM. My OS 1.60 spins my 18x6W around 8600, so if it is anywhere near that...
Thanks,
Gary

As for the ASP 180 fs read my post on this on the glow engines forum, just search for "ASP 180 fs" I tried to link it but it wouldn`t work
It will swing a Menz S 18-6 at 8350 rpm and I think an APC 18-6w will turn even faster
It will blow the SPE 26 away, for sure

Thanks for the info asmund. I was wondering if anyone who has flown and hovered this Edge has also flown and hovered a H9 Ultra Stick Lite. I read somewhere in this thread that this Edge is pretty easy to hover. I have a feel for what the US Lite is like and I wanted a basis for comparison.
Thanks,
Gary

No, not yet. I am doing some major beefing up to the fire wall and landing gear. Should be done today and I can go back to the field Thursday. At the 140mm range the edge is to tail heavy. I am guessing around 125mm is close to right. My engine was running way rich, so to say the least rich and tail heavy I did not btring her down low. From what little flight time I have had (about 3 flight,) she seems to hover as easy as any. Reminds me alot of the segull harrier. Handals wind well and is a floater. Landing gear area is very weak. If you have not looked close at it you better add some support there. Also the fire wall will give away because it is jig locked and the glue is all that holds the bottom plate on. Expoxy and triangle stock will take care of it. As far as the 26. I personally think it will be ok after a good break in, but if I had it to do over and seeing how she floates I would have went with the 40cc. I bought a 40cc from peak to go on a Super Star. The SS has less wing area and I think the 26 would be just right for it, So I am thnking of a switch. But before I do it I am going to fly the edge several time with the 26 just to make sure. I will report. Thanks!

I flew the edge again today. The more I fly and run the edge the more I am liking it. I read somewhere that this edge was fast.
What, not so at all Even at high and low flight she is rock solid. I am CG at 14mm. No hovers, rolling circles, or flat spins yet just some basic maneucvers. So far so good. The 26 so far is proving to be a pretty good match. The engine really needs a really good break in. The throttle curve is off, so it makes moves slow and slopy. I am thinking a smaller prop and time (break in) will cure the problem. Take my advice and add blind nuts and 4-40 bolts for the canopy.

Bill33, Here is the red I added to the bottom of the wing to make it easier to differentiate the top from the bottom. The plane is not ready to fly yet but I think this will be easy to see.

Thanks for the picture Az3d.
I'm a bit surprised because I have some difficulties to obtain a good CG.
My Edge is centered at 115mm, but to ontain it I had to place the batteries in the rear of the fuse

I have an OS160FX and a Pitts muffler(approx 1050g, probably less), placed 2 servos (2x60g) at rear for elevator and one behind the center plate for rudder.

If I have to place the CG at 125mm, I will have lots of difficulties !
Do you have the same problem ? How did you proceed ?

bill33 , I think that the edge final CG may be around 124mm, but she is very agile at that. I am flying mine at 115 and is flying fine. I did have mine at 140mm and that was way to tail heavy. I moved it to 125mm. I was still not comfortabl at that. After a while I may move it back, but I would start at around 110 to 115 till ;you get a feel for it.

A mate of mine bought an ASP/Sanye 180 from PeakModel and even though it got a bit dinged in the post, it sure runs sweet.
I'm a Saito man through and through -- but it's hard to argue that the ASP/Sanye (at least from Peak) sure has an unbeatable bang for your buck rating.
He's got it in a World Models FunWorld 3D which weighs in at around 10.5lbs and the 180 with a 17x6 Volk prop hovers that baby at around half throttle with more than adequate pull-out when using 10% nitro fuel.
I think one of these in the PeakModel Edge would be a rocket!
I'm getting more and more tempted by the day -- it's just the near certainty that the postman would deliver me a box of smashed balsa and a dented engine that stops me hitting they "buy" button :-(

Xjet,
don't worry. Now Peakmodel have an extra strong and thick carton box to ship overseas. Is as hard and safe as a wooden box. Just ask them to pack your model and your engine also into that heavy cardboard, and buy confident. Maybe Peakmodel can ask you few bucks more for the shipment due to the added weight, but this packing is bullet proof. Even if the postman use your airplane as a chair, nothing can happen.
Bye.

I think you underestimate the power of the post-office to mash stuff up.
The last order I got from PeakModel (just a month or so ago) came in double-boxed packaging -- and it was squashed as flat as could be. The cardboard had been so crushed that it was completely soft. Fortunately there was nothing breakable inside but if it had been a model it would have been a bag of balsa fragments wrapped in film.
My mate's 180 was also well boxed -- but half the engine was till hanging out in the breeze when it was finally delivered :-(
I also got a package from another (Hong Kong) supplier today and the heavy postal envelope it was packed in was ripped open such that some of the contents were missing.
Stuff comes from the USA fine -- it's just the China connection where the carnage occurs.

I would not be too concerned about the shipping. My plane and wings came in great shape. The cowl was chipped up and I let them know. They shipped me a new one in about two weeks. I am just working the bugs out and my edge should be ready to fly this weekend.

I realise that shipping to other parts of the world seems fine -- but I've yet to receive *anything* out of China that hasn't been damaged in some way or another, regardless of the amount of packaging used.
And, as I said earlier, the postal service managed to damage an *engine* for goodness sakes! Hell, I can pile an engine into the deck from 100 feet and it suffers less damage than this one received while in the care of the postal service! What are they doing with this stuff?
My first purchase from PeakModel was really dinged around (an EP Katana RTF) and although they replaced the transmitter (the sticks got broken), the plane itself required a bit of repairing and still has bits of torn/dented covering because it's just not worth returning. From the time I ordered it to the time I was able to fly it was quite a few weeks, what with waiting for stuff to be replaced etc. To their credit, Peak were very good about replacing the transmitter -- but it's still a major hassle having to wait more than a month -- especially when our flying season seems to get shorter every year.
I'll just wait until someone else around here orders one to see if theirs makes it through unscathed :-)

I would try to contact with Peakmodel and ask them if it's possible to have also a different courier than EMS. Maybe they can manage to ship through DHL or UPS. A little bit more expensive, but maybe safer. I'm my country there's a saying: "talking with people you can understand eachother"...
Bye.
