Hey guys, Well the flying yesterday was really, really fun. I had some troubles with the Do at first but finally flushed out the carb and it flew awesome after that. Kyle was there with my friend Ernie and oh Man! did Kyle tear it up. I didn't realize how good someone could fly untill I saw him flying his 42% with a DA 150. Unbelievable flying skills. I was standing up at the flight line with him and Ernie and took some pics. At one point he was hovering it at about a foot off the deck and moved it over to the dirt area out from the grass and it's huge 3 bladed prop cause quite a dust cloud to come up. I said, "hey who needs a smoke system" and he said "yeah, that's right" Later on I asked him if he wanted to fly my OMP Katana profile and he said "sure". I asked Ernie if he could take some pics of Kyle flying it and he got a couple of Kyle and me standing there and then my batteries went dead [>:] Arrrggghhh.....! Anyway, here's some pics of Kyle flying his plane and the last two are of me standing next to him as he flew the Kat. (I'm the short one with the doofy look on my face) I asked him how he liked the Kat and he said he loved it. At one point he said "man this plane is fast".

I have been watching Kyle from afar for a couple of years on video's. I think he may arguably be the best freestyle pilot in the US and possibly in the world. The kid just defies the rules of physics with an airplane. I have several friends who know him and have flown with him recently and say he is a gentleman as well. [8D]

Update - Well, I finally go the UCD in the air this weekend. We broke in the motor on a chilly and foggy Saturday morning, which was perfect weather as there wasn’t anyone at the field but my father and a couple of friends. So we didn’t disturb anyone with the constant running of the motor while it was broken in. I was a bit too uneasy about the whole thing to trust my abilities that morning so when one of the top pilots at the field showed up later that morning, I asked him. He was glad to help out and I was very glad to have an experienced pilot at the sticks.
The plane launched into the air after maybe 20 feet and it was flying nice and easy. Bob, the pilot, said that it only needed two clicks of up elevator to be in perfect trim. I was really happy but it was making a horrendous noise that sounded like it was vibrating apart. So he brought it down and we went over it with a fine tooth comb to try and determine what was causing the noise. It turns out that the Monokote was vibrating and acting like a snare drum when the prop wash flowed over it. Other than sounding terrible, there was no problem. So Bob took it back up and let me have a turn flying it around and get used to it. I began to bring it in because the timer went off and Bob asked if he could land it as he wanted to show me a few tricks. As this was my first glow powered tail-dragger, I had a small problem in that I began to come in a little hot.
Bob had it coming in nice and perfect when the plane lurched to the right as if it was hit by something. I thought it was going in hard but Bob was able to recover just inches from the ground and made a perfect three-point landing. When it was down we started talking about what could have caused the problem and when he asked about where I placed the antennae my heart sank…. As I remembered that I forgot to pickup the tube that week prior and therefore the antennae was stilled coiled up with a twist tie. ïŒ
… We began to laugh as we realized just how lucky we were when we were flying it around earlier…. Thanks to Futaba’s PCM my plane is still in one piece and flying great!
The rest of the weekend wasn’t as exciting except that I was able to get 12 flights on the plane from Sunday morning to Tuesday afternoon. This thing flies great and makes it looks so damn easy when landing. It was funny I that before when I would fly my SS, nobody noticed. Now when I fly the UCD, the comment on how well I have grown as a pilot or how professional my landings are looking. For most of the flights this weekend I was able to make three-point landings and then taxi back to my spot. Before with the SS, I had to shut it down and fetch it from the end of the runway. This plane is great and with the Saito on it just makes it better overall.
Also, I just wanted to thank everyone that helped me with the build by offering up suggestions and tips for success. The upgraded control rods were a big hit. I think Central Hobbies will be getting a few calls for their CF rods and Slimline for the new Inverted Pitts Muffler that I stuck on the Saito. This upgrades sure seemed to garner a lot of attention and compliments. BTW, I was able to perform the hover for the first time on Tuesday and I made it look like I was a pro.
So thanks again for all of the help and I will try to get some pictures up this weekend.
Thanks Again,
Mark

Hey Ron, Well I'll have to say I wasn't too sure that wanted to watch him fly since I thought it would be just be too humbling but it actually really inspired me. I felt like I had more nerve after that and really did much better flying after that. It was amazing and fun.

Man! There is nothing like a brand new UCD. I'm happy for you.I often wonder if I should put one or two in personal inventory just in case they stop making them someday. They've been around a while now. I hope they keep making them, but you never know.
Thanks

That's a good idea Barry. Ya never know. They are sure are fun to fly and I was tearing it up the other night with mine. I think I'll take my old one and put it up in the attic just in case something happens to the new one. [X(]

Hey Barry... Great job on the Cap maiden...
Man, You mean to tell me that high tech radio has no kill switch??? You have to find
a better way to practice dead sticks without dropping the engine
... But come to
think of it, If you could get it all the way off what better way to practice tail heavy
dead sticks.... Man you are always thinking... You da man!!!

Well for the last two weekends the weather at the field has been pretty crappy so I was unable to fly or get good pictures. So hopefully within the next few weeks, I'll get some decent pics up on the siite for you guys to see the completed model.
Cheers,
Mark
