I have an OS .61 FX swinging a 13 X 4 prop. Unfortunately, I don't have the skill to hover, but r my friends can. With this set up they are able to hover it, and pull out of it with authority. I take off at 1/4 throttle and only give it more throttle when I am doing a manuever. I have unlimited vertical.

[&o]I have a Mag 91 FS in mine, My only complaint is the fuel system which sucks big time, anyone have a suggestion on how to make it work w/o flooding. The engine works well after starting, before that it floods too easy and is a real pain. The engine works very well after I can clear it. Some one must have a tank set up that will work? PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Some UCD owners lowered the tank after modifying the lower nose by removing the cooling channel. Look in the UCD 60 thread. Some guys even posted pictures of the mod. I use a Cline regulator on my UCD 60 with Saito 100, stock tank location. Why, 'cause I had the Cline from a parevious installation. On my UCD 46, I don't use a regulator or pump and stock tank location - with an OS .70 Surpass. I have no problems with either set-up. The Cline does keep the needle setting consistent throughout the run.

Ran into a slight problem with mine yesterday. 46 size with a Saito 100, APC 16 x 4W prop. Pulled the threaded section from the back of the blind nuts holding the motor mount on. Three of them just snapped off when I hit the throttle hard in a waterfall. Got a couple of hours on it. Firewall is fine.
I had used the stock mount and it worked with minor mods. Think I should have gone the next size up and put larger blind nuts in the firewall.
BTW, plenty of vertical, even with the engine running rich breaking in.

Thanks for the input, I will go with my OS 61FX.
I was about toorder it when I saw the ad for the Razor (Lanier) which looks nice but I think I am going to go with the crowd and become a UCD enthusiast.
Chris.

So has anyone really been able to make this thing 3D? I'm steadily moving the cg back, but I'm really struggling at getting the plane to do basic 3d stuff. Sure, it hovers fine, but that's about it. I can't make the spins flatten out, no matter what I do. It won't harrier at all, like the wing won't let go until the plane is vertical. Ok, use spoilerons, but that just makes it look a little better, not actually do it. Does it need a sharper leading edge? Also, can't get a knife edge spin, and regular knife edge has the most wicked coupling ever. Anyone have any secrets?

Astroman,
Where's your CG? For better 3D the CG should be way aft. I'm no 3D pro, but I can get mine to harrier pretty good with no spoilerons. My CG is 5 3/4" - had to add ~ 1 oz. lead under Klett tailwheel mount. I have OS .70 Surpass, 14x4W APC, 1650 mah battery behind throttle servo mount. I don't remember the elevator travel, but it's not any more than the book's 3D setting.

I wish I could fly this weekend! We have a Nor'eater going on here - bummer
. I have skis for the UCD .46 but the winds will be too much. Anways, when I'm doin a harrier the nose is up 40 degress or so with lots of elevator and constant low-throttle changes. I do maintain some airspeed - maybe 10 mph (little to no ground speed into the wind) and transition into a hover or high-alpha knife edge.

my cg is almost 7 inches now, and she's starting to come around, I'll move it another inch tomorrow. Have you been able to solve the coupling problems? It was 80 and sunny here today, flying off nice grass.

Yes, I greatly improved the coupling problems by mixing opposite aileron and I think up elevator. I have the mix on a switch and turn it off in a hover. I can take off and go knife edge at about 10 feet altitude and reduce the throttle from take off to maintain gentle knife edge climb or aggressive climb into knife edge loop - which I haven't mastered (sorta fall out due to dumb thumbs at 180 degrees (top of loop).

Thanks for the advice. Me, agressive with the cg?? [>:] I'll try setting it right as 6.25" I know the coupling is gonna get worse, but it has been almost unbearable from the beginning. I have most of it mixed out, it's just a little dissappointing and I was hoping someone had a magic solution to it. I'm going to try changing the wing incidence and see what happens, that should help with the pitch coupling at least. Hasta!

had my first flight today with the redone ucd. found out theres lots of vibration with the new saito 91. took off at half throttle, fly around at 1/4 for awhile , then decided to see how much verticla this puy took. pointed her up and away she went. flat spin back down to do the same thing, but as i pull up, i chop the throttle, and sit it out above the runway. start torqing a little, then back to putzing around the cool sky. gota love it. jeff

I just ordered a saito .91 for my ucd to replace the old worn out os .70. should be here in a couple of days. i can't wait to get it out with the new engine. any suggestions on prop sizes? i was using an apc 13x4W. on a lighter note i haven't had any problems with the landing gear. with my os .70 my landings were dead stick 4 out of 5 times and had no problems with the gear. mine seems to float back to the ground like a feather.

outonalimb,
where do you fly? I know where mark's hobby shop field is but don't know where TJ's is. Do you fly at either of these? I mainly fly around here. Sure would be cool to see another U Can flying somewhere....

I fly at MARCS (Mid-Arkansas Radio Control Society) which is one of marks hobby shop clubs. he is a member of MARCS and NLR Skytigers. There are only 2 or 3 other ucd's in the area that i know of but i think they are catching on. come on down sometime, pm me for directions. P.S. beware of tj's.
