Grrrr
Today was the first flight on my UCD, and i must say that today was THE MOST frustrating time i have ever had with a plane. The airframe is great, the problem was with my saito 100. Using the recomended prop, and trying to get this thing broken in, it wouldnt idle, the muffler kept vibrating loose, i lost a rudder linkage (vibration, should have thread-locked it) the cowl vibrated loose. All in all, i think this will be a good setup, but today i wanted to throw it all away.. lol. Any good tips on how to get the saito 100 to run/idle good? I mostly need it to idle (low idle). Could this be because it is not fully broken in yet??
Thanks for ANY help Brett |

Flybywire : Try leaning the low side in. My Saito 100 & 72 also , were very very rich on low end. Turn the low speed needle in about 1/4 turn at a time until you get a reliable idle. I had to lean my Saitos in like a couple of turns to get a good idle. Hope this helps.

yeah i leaned it out about 3/4 of a turn today, i thought that may have been TOO lean... next time out i'll run w/o the cowl and tune it up a little better. I was worried that 3/4 may have been TOO much, but from what it sounds like, it can be leaner? Thanks!!

My Saito 72 took about 3-4 full turns on the low end from the factory to get it to idle...it was set way too rich that it would not start until it was at least 3 turns in.

wow, well that makes me feel MUCH better... thanks a lot guys. Now i know what do do the next time out. What props are working best for the saito 100...14x10? (book reccomends)

Hello all, I have a similar problem. I am using a new but older style OS 91 surpass (not the II). I can adjust the low end and get it to idle for for about 20 seconds then it seems to load up and eventually quit. I also notice that the when the tank is full it floods the carb. Does this have have something to do with the idle problem or does it not matter when its running? also how do I stop the fuel from filling the carb. Thanks for any help. Nathan

u can do 3d exellent...
yes i am flying one it is fantastic ,, i am using a saito 100 with a apc 13x4w prop.. it will do anything .. lots of power very stable.
i love it.. hv another for back up... it is built well also.. had to beef up landing gear block thats all... |
U Can Do 3D
I think the flooding problem is caused by the tank centerline being higher than the venturi in the carb of the motor. I was told that this only matters while the motor is not running. What i do is fuel up, then right afterwards i start my motor. I dont let it sit with fuel in the tank....

im thinking about mounting the saito 100 on it side .. in my next ucd it does not like to be inverted.. as it is breaking in its better
still hv some problem throwing props when u first start.. any ideas guys,, Bruce |
Version 2.0?
My backordered UCD arrived last night (I didn't realize that FedEx delivered at 7:00PM on a Saturday-- what a nice surprise!). Just as with my Venus, it is absolutely perfect! I checked for wing-rib damage and could find none (and no sound of loose pieces in the wing).
Man, you guys were right-- this thing is big! The wing looks like it could double as a surfboard (snowboard here in the NW :)). I'm actually not so worried about that one-piece wing fitting in my car as I am the fuselage! Wow! Since I assume that this is from a "new" shipment (it's was on backorder from Tower for the last few months), I wonder if there have been any changes? There was a "Product Improvement Sheet" that simply said you may need to cut away some of the rear former in front of the rudder/elevator servos (note the *you* in that sentence-- how is that an improvement?). I haven't checked the gear yet (but that's not hard to fix anyway). New YS .91FZ is just waiting... |

Had the UCD out this weekend with the YS 120 and 16X4W APC. That prop is the schiznitz for this plane. Never gets too much airspeed and has tons of thrust and will sit still on the runway - even with the 120. On my fourth flight, I kind of dumb thumbed the landing by letting the plane slow down too much. It kind of just dropped straight down from about 2 feet up. Broke the landing gear plate out and proceeded to put the wheel pant on one side right through the bottom covering and out the top. Looks like something exploded in the wing. AAARRG! I hate covering. I may just patch it without matching the original scheme as a badge of honor - LOL. I think I'll keep the UCD for a bit.

LANDING
What kind of landing? Was it from a normal approach or was it from a verticle 2 foot high hover? Just wondering C.J.

U Can Do 3D
CJ, I was kind of carrying it in with a crosswind and really should have added some more throttle and brought it further down the runway to me. I was thinking "wow this is cool" because the ground speed was so low - too low. I think pretty much every landing I have done with my UCD has been almost a harrier. The tail wheel is always touching the runway ahead of the mains by about 6" to 9" and there is no roll out. It looks so cool....

U-CAN-DO
I want to get one of these planes. Will wait till spring though. I do not like flying in cold weather anymore. But if they come out with something better yet from another company, I will get the new and better. It seems like these ARF,s are coming out like popcorn out of a poper!!!!! Smooth Landings :D Captinjohn :D

Anyone know what color....
the Red is on this plane. I need to recover the area's I had to fix from the shipping damage. You'd think GP would just give you two free rolls (red and white) for the trouble.......This will be the last GP plane I buy.......
Is it Monocote or Ultracote? Thanks, Pug |
U Can Do 3D
Pugsley,
This info is from Tower Hobbies, U-Can-Do-3D "Tech Notes": (numbers are Tower's stock numbers) The U-Can-Do 3D is covered with the following Monokote colors: Jet White (TOPQ0204) True Red (TOPQ0227) Sky Blue (TOPQ0206) Sapphire Blue (TOPQ0226) Black (TOPQ0208 |
Sweet.....Thanks....
Now why didn't I think of going there to look.
Thanks. Pug |
u can fuel tank
I'm using a 91 FZ on my U-Can and wanted to use a 16oz DuBro
tank but i noticed the tank came a little close to the fuse sides. I wonder if it is enough room when the tank pressure swells the tank. I'll be mounting it on the C/G and there is not enough depth in the fuse to mount the tank on its side. What are you YS guys doing about the tank set up in your UCD's Thanks Brad |
U Can Do 3D
Brad,
I just used the stock tank and opened up the formers in the wing area to accomodate the width. I have not had any problems with the tank so far.... Dale |
U Can Do 3D
Hi guys, i have a saito 100 on my u can do. its wild..
i love it.. its one of best arf go has come out with,.. Bruce |
U Can Do 3D
my two cents. i also used stock tank.. no problem..
only problem i have is the engine flooding out at first.. i hate inverted mounting.. i have another u can do for back up. may change the mounting.. |
u can fuel tank
Thanks guys
I was just worried about the YS blowing the seams in the stock tank Brad |
U Can Do 3D
Brad,
You can always wrap the tank with nylon filament packing tape if you are concerned. Wrap a full wrap at the front and another at the rear and put a nylon wire tie around the stopper neck and pull it tight after you install the stopper assembly. Dale |
APC pros
would someone tell me where to get 16 x 4 APC props? tower don't have them, is there any other company making props that size?
THANKS. |
U Can Do 3D
Best price I have found is Central Hobbies http://www.centralhobbies.com/props/index.html Hope you need something more than a prop though to cover shipping costs.
