U Can Do 3D
Has anyone thrown an incidence meter on any of these? Couldn't that explain the pitch coupling with rudder? Just wondering.... Putting mine together and would like to know what the set up on the good ones is.

Hi GUYs I just made A mod that worked good I clipped the tips down to the last rib mainly because it would not fit in the back seat of my truck but it ended up making it track A little bit better and roll rate increased noticeably. Mark

Wing warp?
To all,
Noticed that my new UCD3D wing has a slight dihedral along the leading edge and a slight anhedral along the trailing edge. What will be the flight effects if any from this? Pitch coupling to the belly in knife edge? Thanks for any info. ____________ jmboss |

Jim,
My UCD balances at about 5 1/4 to 5 1/2 inches from the leading edge. The tank is positioned over the CG. My 6v 1700 mAh NiCd pack is right behind the second former (right behind the tank) The throttle servo and receiver are right behind this at the rear of the wing compartment. No lead has been added. Another identical setup has 3-4 oz under the tail to make it balance around 6 inches back. Chris (I'm sure you've all seen one by now but I just had to post a picture) |
Chris Massa UCD3D
Chris,
Two Questions about your UCD3D in the picture. What prop are you using? Which model # Sullivan(?) tailwheel are you using? Thanks. ________ jmboss |
U Can Do 3D
I think the tailwheel bracket is the S860 (5-12 pound size - I had to look it up on the Sullivan web site) with the stock UCD3D tailwheel. I'm surprised that you can even tell that was a Sullivan tailwheel from the picture. Good eyes! I didn't modify the bottom of the fuse at all. Just drilled the holes and hardened them with thin CA. No problems so far.
The prop is currently a 15x6 APC. I'll be switching to a 16x4w or 16x6 soon. This prop revs up a little much (10,000 rpms) Flies great though. You really have to modify the aluminum 2 1/4" spinners to fit these props. They are made for much smaller props and engines. I wish the UCD3D had been designed around a 2 1/2" or larger spinner. We have to modify the nuts and cone screw a little to make them fit the shaft. The TruTurn seems to fit a little better than the Dave Brown - they are a little bit longer so it clears the end of the shaft better. |
apc16x4W on YS91AC/FC
Chris,
I never liked the apc16x4W on my YS91AC. The prop is so heavy, that the engine sounds like one of those old 1300 cc - 30HP VW engines. It picks up revs really slowly and takes a while to slow down. I like good throttle response when hovering and 3D-ing. I like the apc15x6, and if that's not enough, try the 15x7. DKjens |

Ill be useing a 17x6 prop. I hope ill be able to reinforce all the week areas of this plane with out meassing up the looks of it, like the fire wall and landing gear blocks. |

captinjohn: supertiger has it, I dont own that motor yet nor have I seen one in action (have you?).... I too am very curious how this setup would turn out, and what kind of performance it has...

Desertrat: I seen a 1.4 in a Ulimate biplane near Grand Rapids Mich. The engine ran real nice. The plane flew real good too. A youg Lady Built the plane and also flew it. It was at a very nice fly-in. One of the most active clubs I have been to. Best Regards John Near fremont Mich

John: neat, I had a feeling the engine would run well... I just wonder if its got enough power to make up for the additional 1.5 lbs of weight... they claim it will turn an APC 16x10 at 8500 rpm... that *should* be good power, but I wonder what it turns in reality.

UCD3D renamed...

Folks,
As others had previously mentioned,... GP designed a great plane (no pun intended) but should had put a little more thought into the name. Attached is a picture of my UCD3D,.. now named "X-treme 3D". I also designed my own wheel pant decals. Amazing what you can do with a computer, inkjet color printer, water-transfer paper, MS Powerpoint and a little imagination. :) More pics can be seen at http://www.prism.net/lingling/RC/UCD.html |

Attached is a ZIP file that contains the basic file PPT (Powerpoint 2000) with the "X-treme 3D" decals, including L and R wheel pant decals. The paper I used was purchased from http://shop.store.yahoo.com/beldecal/moddecpap.html I've used other paper and this appears to be the cheapest I could find (please tell me if some one else sells it cheaper, this stuff is $1 or less a sheet, depending how much you buy). These were printed using a cheap ($100) HP 940C inkjet printer. After printing, I coated with 2 coats of TopFlite clear coat (fuel proof stuff of course). Best method to apply is to scuff the monokote with 000 steel wool, apply decal, then mask & coat with a light coat of Topflite clear coat. Other decals were simply copied from manufacturer websites. Have fun! |
Tomapowa UCD3D Cowl
Tomapowa,
Checked your pics on your web page. Noticed that your UCD3D cowl had more that its share of cracks and deformities. I don't feel as bad now about the condition of my cowl as it is in similar shape, but, I think that better quality control is in order. Has anyone else had problems with their cowls? Maybe this is a issue Ann-Marie Cross should address. ____________ jmboss |

The hardware bag of goodies were stuffed into the cowl and during shipping, it appeared that the box got a little banged around, causing the cowl to get crushed against the hardware bag. I had to reinforce the inside seams of the cowl too. This is a fairly flimsy cowl, as compared to other manufacturers. But then again,... you can always get a new cowl (hopefully unblemished) for $15 from Tower Hobbies. As for my Monokote problems, it didn't surprise me too much seeing that the box got bounced around from NV (hot) to RI (cold), via IL (?). Nothing an iron and gun couldn't resolve (although, it took me 4+ hours to correct). |

Quality control issues
Tomapowa,
Spent roughly the same amount of time working on the Monokote too! LOL! Situation Normal with these ARFs I suppose. To all, While on the subject of quality control....... Noticed that my one piece wing has enough of a warp that I cannot seem to correct by working with the Monokote film, as I previously mentioned in post #481 on this thread: "Noticed that my new UCD3D wing has a slight dihedral along the leading edge and a slight anhedral along the trailing edge." Actually, on closer inspection, the anhedral warp is more concentrated on the right side of the trailing edge. Is this something to be concerned about? Thanks for any info _________ jmboss |
U Can Do 3D
jmboss,
After flying a number of fun fly and profile type planes (some had warps), I think that the only answer will be to try it. I think that I would try to reflex the aileron a bit to compensate for the droop, but not much. Remember, that you will be flying low speed stuff that you will be controlling all the time. It may be a bit more difficult to set up with trim and mix. Let us know how it flies. You are all correct, the monocote job on this is one of the worst that I have seen. The plane looks old right out of the box! Dale |

Originally posted by f2racer Tom, thanks for posting the powerpoint file. But on my computer, it doesn't quite look right. What font did you use? I'm guessing that I don't have it... Ooops! Forgot that some might not have the specific font. I tried saving the Powerpoint file in a graphics format (JPG or GIF) but the output is rough (not giving good detail as that in PP when printed). In hopes that this might remedy the problem, I've attached the TTF font file below (zipped of course). Try unzipping and placing in the "C:/WINDOWS/FONTS" directory on your harddisk, then reload the decal file. Let me know if that works. |

TOMAPOWA,
Ordered some decal sheets at your recommendation from Beldecal. Price was OK, but then they added $6.00 shipping on top. Way too much for basically a few sheets of paper. What was your experience with them? Should have the UCD done this weekend, looking forward to being able to add a few details to trick it out a bit. Dale |
