RE: Showtime
:)ItsShowtime...This is the "dead" spot I've been discussing on this plane. For some reason there is an area of flight with low elevator input that is dead. I assume that it is from the angle of the wing somehow deflecting all air over the elevator. Or maybe something else, but it's definetly there.
It's real pain and very scary to me. It seems to do it at the most inopportune times. I notice it also on gentle takeoffs. If you just try to make a slow gradual climb the plane will just quit flying until you give it a lot of elevator. But worse is as you discuss. When in loops, hover or other moves it sometimes, without warning, fall out of the manunever. To me it is a flaw in design somewhere. I really can't define it exactly, but very nerve racking and uncomfortable while flying. So I just try to avoid that gentle stuff with the plane. Ha Ha. The Showtime has many wonderful characteristics and I wouldn't trade mine for anything. I love the KE and the ease of hover, spins, waterfalls etc. It will do them all. But there is that one area....It really bugs me and won't let me fly the plane with the confidence it deserves. Thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
Barry, thanks for the input. I had read your previous posts on the matter and didn't realize when you were talking about a dead spot that you were referring to that wing droping out. You're right, it really does happen at inopportune times... But I guess there never really is a good time. I am going to try epoxying the hor stabs on tonight and see if that make any differerance because I've noticed there is a little slop in there.
I am also wondering if any of you have had any problems with the landing gear ripping out? Happened to me on a nice soft landing on grass and darn near took the plane apart. FYI if you haven't experianced this that you might want to really reinforce yours because it's no treat to fix when it happens. Barry, do you or anyone else on here, happen to know a place where a guy can look on the internet to see flight definitions and what different manuevers are? There are only a few people who fly at the field I am at and they don't seem to have any idea what a waterfall is or a harrier. Odds are, I am probably doing them, but I have no idea what they are called ;) Thanks for your insight. ME |
RE: Showtime
You should read my previous post. I pancaked mine from 20 feet and the LG just delaminated, but the box and everything else survived. a bit of thin CA, and I'm as good (well almost) as new.

RE: Showtime
Hey Barry,
SPUD here-just getting mine back together. Had a dead stick the other day and ripped the bottom out of mine:(. Worst part of the crash was my cowl was totaled[:@]. Just ordered one from Horizon. Should have it ready for when this Hurricane finally gets through here. When I was in Orlando last week picked up the mini-edge by the same designer as the ST:). Its a neet little electric. Well back to the workbench. Oh yeah, when I ploughed my ST , I ran home and grabbed my UCD 46- couldn't end the day on a sour note.:D:D:D SPUDs out............see ya |
RE: Showtime
Greetings fellow showtimers. I've been flying mine for a few weeks now, and whilst it is for the most part a really nice flying model it has one nasty habit that I can't seem to get rid of. When I get to about 10-15 degrees of Elevator throw (up or down), the damn thing snaps to the right - every time. I've checked all the basics - wing twist, elevator travel and so on and can't find an error anywhere. CG is spot-on when dry, weight is 8 1/2 Lbs. Speed doesn't make any difference.
Does anyone have any suggestions, 'cos I've run out of inspiration! |
RE: Showtime
How about lateral balance? It sounds like you have a Cap instead of a Showtime;)

RE: Showtime
:)This snapping as you call it is what I and others have been discussing about this plane in this forum. I think it is a design flaw where the wing somehow blocks the air going to the elevator. It really bugs me and takes away some of the joy of this fine airplane. It flys so good in so many ways, it a shame it's flawed in this manner.
thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
Has anyone tried the Evolution 100 on this beast yet? Maybe a good engine on a budget....
|
RE: Showtime
You know, I don't really know what this "design flaw" is all about. I don't feel it at all. My ST feels solid throughout all maneuvers, slow / fast, high / low alpha
|
RE: Showtime
Josh,
I was going to say the same thing, although I only have about a dozen flights on mine. If the weather stays good around here, I'll try to get some video. ken |
RE: Showtime
:)Don't get me wrong...I love my Showtime. I wouldn't trade it for any other plane. I fly it a lot and really enjoy it.
But, there is definetly a "dead spot" on the elevator with minimum to moderate throws. Doesn't hurt the 3D manuevers but can be a handful to recover from, for example if you fall out of a hover, on takeoff, or making a low turn from downwind into the wind. If you are only using a bit of elevator is when you will see it. Doesn't make me not like the airplane but it is a very weird sensation. Probably will keep me from fully trusting this airplane in very low high alpa manueuvers. Other than this little "flaw" and you can fly through it, I love my Showtime. Thanks Barry PS: my belief is it is in every Showtime. If you want to feel it, just take off at a gradual incline fairly slowly. The plane will lift off and then just quit flying and fall right back to the ground. If you give it full up or nearly so, no problem. |
RE: Showtime
Barry,
I usually roll to inverted when I get about 5 feet off the ground, I hope I don't feel it then:). Ken |
RE: Showtime
:)I do that too...Must be a 3Der trademark.
But next time you fly, try the slow gentle take off. You'll probably feel it. Mine does it 100% of the time. It does it other times to but this is the most predictable. Again, I love the plane. Not knocking it in any way. In fact I don't think there is anyone on this thread that has had more good to say about it. I even did a review where the Showtime was a clear winner. But as I've flown it more this characteristic has displayed itself. I also notice it in ease of recovery from flat spin. You have to fly this plane out of flat spin. It will not self correct with no stick input. Thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
I'll give it a shot, btw, speaking of the flat spin, this is the first plane I've had that I can just fly out of a flat spin, both inverted and upright, by reversing rudder and adding power. I don't have to drop the nose like my other planes.
Swwweeeeeeeet:D:D Ken |
RE: Showtime
:)It does a nice flat spin. With the SFGs on I can even get it to do a flat pinwheel. It won't do a rising flat spin but almost. I do the same thing, just reverse the sticks give full throttle and fly out into a hover or waterfall. Plane also does great waterfalls. And it's KE are spectacular. I love the way it flys. Now, if there wasn't that little glitch...
Thanks Barry |

Barry if you had the choice would it be the wife or your showtime.. LOL J/K. I know you enjoy ........The plane. I enjoy reading all about it.
My show time is engineless at the moment. I had the saito 100 and it was okay just not a rocket. I needed the 100 for a Mojo 60 I just finished. I have a YS 120 on the way, I wanted the 110 but it seems everyone knows you cant get one right now. Used 110's are selling for new prices on ebay. The YS 120 should work fine. I also have a enya 120(the timex), this will be my 1st YS . Which would you use. Here's a pic of my mojo |
RE: Showtime
:)I don't know a thing about the enya 120. Don't even know if it is 2 or 4 stroke. I've been sold on 4 stroke engines for some time now. In many cases I don't think there is a clear difference but in my mind there is. And I never hear of people actually saying the 2 strokes are better, mostly "as good as" the 4 strokes. So if the enya is a 2 stroke obviously I'd choose the YS. I love my YS engines although I've had a rocky road to get them to run right. I believe the 120 (I don't personally have that size but I know friends personally that have them) is much easier to tune than the 110. And I do think it would be a great fit for your Showtime. It will probably weigh about 10 - 12 jozs more than your Saito though. You may have to go to the tail mounted rudder servo. I'll bet that would be the case with the enya also.
And just for the record in case there was any question whatsoever, I love my wife and family much much more than RC planes. But I love RC planes too. Thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
:)Oh...Nice picture of the MoJo. Did you cover it yourself? Those are only available as a kit, correct? Looks easy to see. That's important to me. I'll bet it flys sweet with that nice Saito on the nose.
Thanks BArry |
RE: Showtime
The enya is a 4 stroke, I perfer the 4 strokes as well.
The Mojo is a kit which I hate to build, so a buddy needed some dirt work done and he loves to build. Worked out perfect, he built the plane, I did his dirt work. I dont mind ARF'ing but I hate to build. I'm no carpenter, I can weld it but I can't nail it:) I think I'll wait til I recieve the YS and just see which one fits better. To me Enya 4 strokes are very under-rated and just not marketed well in the US. |
RE: Showtime
Kyle tail mounted his servo with the YS 120. I think the YS 120 weighs the same as a Saito 150, and if so, tail mounted rudder servo is definitely the way to go.

RE: Showtime
Guys,
I have a YS 1.10 with APC 16X6 prop and a 2.5" Trutun spinner on the nose. I had it set up with a pull-pull rudder and I felt the plane was pretty nose heavy. I like my planes to be pretty much neutral when I roll them to inverted, or just breath on the down elevator stick. So, I moved the JR 8411 I had in the pull-pull back to the tail mounted position and the plane feels much better now. Still just a little noseheavy yet I think. The stock fuel tank that came with the kit is mounted directly in front of the wingtube. I have not taken the time to actually measure the balance point yet. I need to stop being lazy and do a washer for some right thrust adjustment. Plane also seems to be pulling to the canopy on long downlines. Have to play with it more next weekend if I get out to fly, I hope. Anyone else here use a JR 10X to fly their Showtime? I could post my settings, even though I really do need to tweak them more. I have been just flying it the way it is because of limited time at the flying field. Barry Finck Enola, PA |
RE: Showtime
TorkRolln, I would be very thankful if you could post your settings, as I will be flying mine with a 10X (if work lets me get around to finishing it)

RE: Showtime
What about the Evolution 100 2 stroke?
