Well, Woodland had a slight crosswind today about 30 off the nose. The jet likes to weathervane alot. Flew with authority. 13lbs with UAT fuel. The MW44 runs great even though I thought it might be unattainable after a few months. Sara at Wren is a real pleasure to work with. Once i moved the CG back about 1" and reduced ELE throw, the left snap was almost impossible to re-create in any configuration. The tailhook works good for scraping the ground! Overall, a great simple, short and easy project. I'm glad I built it as it really is a kick to fly aerobatics with. 6 flights today and not a hiccup! Flies with the rough thrust to weight as the A10.

Looks good from here. Have you change the throw on you jet beside the CG and elevator.
Should have mine (same color sheme) fired-up with a JF50 bee y this weekend and hopefully flown before the end of this year.

Lovely model. May I use your experience to get mine built equally as successfully as yours? I am about to start on the JHH A-4, similar size and weight as the YA, and was wondering if the Wren 44 is the right engine for it. I presume you are very satisfied with that combination?
Did you keep the weight down by opting for manual start without the permanently attached starting motor?
Have you used nicads or lipolys for the ecu/pump?
What amount of fuel are you carrying, and what flight time are you getting from it?
I have ordered the optional wing drop tanks, I see you removed them in the flying photos, have you tried flying with them on?
Where did you get that scale noseleg from?
Have you fitted brakes? To the mains or to the nosewheel?
Are you operating the arrestor hook by servo or by air ram?
What is your refuelling probe constructed from?
Finally, what is that blue background in all your photos? I seem to have some vague memory of it and its name, but I haven't seen it for 2 or 3 months now. The background here has turned permanently dark grey and wet[

Thanks Guys, finances a little tight right now so a VNY trip is kind of out of the Q:. Thanks for the good wishes. Not sure of the thrust as I didnt get to measure that yet. Its so cold up here I'm sure the thrust will be up on the High side of 7. Sure is fun. I'd love for you guys to see it. I couldnt feel much diff between clean and loaded up although there is a slight CG change during the flight as fuel is burned. We pushed the timer out to 7:30 for the 32oz and never saw the UAT fuel reduce.

Harry, Yes great combo. If you are looking for light wing loading and a forgiving platform. It is a bit better thrust than a DF .65 with Dynamax fan in a Yellow A4 I flew of a buddies. If you want extreme vertical and huge speed put a bigger engine in it. But weight and fuel weight go up then wing loading goes down and snap rolls are prevelant if you ask too much from the wing.(oh no, Ive gone crosseyed!) Personally I like light wing loadings because the jet flies way faster than scale anyway so the slow speed 90mph is great for me.
I carry 32oz with a 5 oz UAT. The MW44 has an onboard starter but you could use the wand. I used the Yellow scale nose strut with Dubro tailwheel, Robart struts with AirMagic wheels and brakes. The tailhook is air down spring up with a jettronics valve. Dry weight is 13lbs. Same as the DF version. Mine came with flaps and I use them for T/O and Landing. I have not made a flaps up landing yet but will on the subs. flights. I lenghtened the gear for scale appearance and cut out more in the wells for clearance. Yes I flew 1/2 the flights with bombs and drops and didnt see a diff in performance.

Many thanks WW. Like you, my instinct is to hold the weight down rather than add power that adds weight, so I was leaning heavily towards the MW44. You have confirmed it is the way to go. Jets perform so well at much lower static thrust to weight ratios than prop planes do. Your 7:13 sounds very similar to my Sabre at 12:22 and it performs ever so well.
Did you make the refuelling probe yourself, what is it made from and is it detachable?
Air down, spring up arrestor hook sounds like a reversed spring air retract, is that what you used to activate it?
32oz of fuel means nothing to me, the irony is that here in the UK where we invented it we haven't taught or used that system for decades! In fact it is mostly illegal here now to sell anything based on that system[:@] I don't suppose you know what 32oz is in litres? Or in US gallons? What flight time are you getting on that amount?

Whiteside,
I am in the process of converting my YA A-4. Can you send me some pics of the inside. I would like to see how/ where you insalled your tanks. I am putting in a Wren 54 in mine.

I didn't get it Will. Just wanted to make sure you got mine.
Again congrats, in a time when people (like me) are forgetting that these planes will fly great with thrust that is less than 1.5 to 1, you remind us.

Its all dependant on the drag induced by AOA and the flying style. An F18 would have to be at a minimum 1:1 for me to be impressed. IE KF.
7.5 minutes is what I use. I used a robart (BVM) air cyl and put a spring on it for return.
The probe is from Yellow. They use a nice stainless bolt and insert. it is removable.
I have to say that even though this A4 is old school design(airfoil, construction) it is the nicest little arf available on the market. I have heard that all of thier ARF's are built this nice. You pay about 1800 bucks delivered but I cant do work this nice. Now if I could get the same guys to build something updated and cool...............................

Will,
Very cool bud, My father in law has built more then 10 of those things back in the ducted fan day and I have logged many flights myself on them with an O.S. .91/ramtec power. I was always curious how it would do with a small turbine becuase the plane's did fly nice, and it was one of my favorites. Dont know what your plans are, but we are flying at our place in the valley on Christmas eve and you are more then welcome to come....That means you too Kenny, but Im sure that is probably too much of an ordeal for most of you who have to be back at a decent time. I would love to see you fly that thing and take video for my Father in law, he has one sitting in his shop up in Oregon still flying with a DF.
Dont be a stranger WW.......Oh by the way, Jimmy needs to borrow one of your screwdrivers!

Well John, its no A10 but its fun to have something that I can throw around like a sport plane. Here are some more pics of todays three flights. We had a ball! Tried a touchdown with brakes on which worked great except you have to be carefull to get off them at a pretty decent speed. Takes off and lands at at a crawl. Buddy Red says I should raise each aileron a hair to improve low speed handling. I moved the motor back about 1/2 inch to get rid of the elevator I am carrying for nose heavy condition. Overall it justs gets more fun every time I take off. I recommend this combo for smooth surfaces over 300'. The takpff run is about 150' with T/O flaps and its a pretty shallow climb untill cleaned up. Its VERY scale in the way it takes off. It does seem to land quite flat. I wish this airfoil was of a better design for the scale appearance, handling and wing outline(SMALLER). I understand the JHH A4 is a bit more scale in its emmpenage width. The more stuff I hang underneath it the better it looks though.
Good Jet.

I assume the landing gear came as part of the package from Yellow?
I'd love to see a better picture of the flaps. I have an A-4 in the corner I might fly one day. I want to do it with flaps.
Thanks
