Installing the landing gear.....

Be careful, because the wood is very very hard and snaps if you tighten the screws too much!!!

Thank's a lot....

Now to my frustration....

GreatPlanes, after messing with the wheel collar screws, now messes with the small screws that bolt the nylon control horns in place.

There length is not enough for coming out of the other side of the ailerons, so, you cannot bolt the backplate of the horn.

This is also very annoying because the backplate ads to the strength of the whole assembly....

I have used some drops of thin CA+, but i am not really sure if it will hold up.

you don't need those screws to come out the other side, the aileron has a hard wood block so you are not supposed to use the backplate. I had this same plane and never had any problem with this configuration.  one question, are you following the manual? I can see you are Z bending the ailerons' pushrods and I'm sure this plane comes with faslink connectors, don't you like them?

Not only that, but you should use sheet metal screws, not machine screws.

If you drill the holes there is no need for using Self-tapping screws.

I know there is a hardwood there , BUT on aggressive movements i am not very sure if the entire control horn will hold up.

Also guys, if there was no need for the backplates of the horns, they wouldn't supply them.

FasLinks are provided, but only x3 if i remember!

So i will use them on the rudder-elevator and maybe throttle servos.

The Z-bends really work nice + it's a 1' job!

even if you drill the holes you'll need the sheet metal screws, drilling the holes is only to guide the screw in. where did you get this plane? it should came with 6 or 7 faslinks, you should call Great Planes to get all the stuff missing.

because drilling the hole won't make threads on the wood, and if you pay attention to the threads on both screws, you'll notices that the machine screw hasn't the threads as deep as the sheet metal screw, so it won't stay in place for too long, you can go with the machine screw if you use the control horn backplate, but in this case, that is not possible, as you can see, the aileron has some kind of triangle shape, so if you sit the control horn even to the aileron, the back plate won't sit flat and even, so you'll have a weak configuration. that's WHY you should use the sheet metal screws. the control horn backplate may be used in any other flat control surface like the rudder, but not with aileron and flaps.

I cann't rely on the threads of a sheet metal screw while using a Saito FA-80 my friend.

Using the backplate of a horn, IMO is necessary unless you want to have trouble.

I will just use some bigger screws, longer, i mean.

hmmm I use that configuration with my 60 size P51, that's the way the manual says it should be done, my P51 has a .91 engine on it and never had any problem at all, that's why I sked you if you were following the manual, there you can see that they clearly estate that you must not drill the holes all the way through the ailerons. anyways, you'll do whatever you want to. just make sure the back plates sit even on the aileron, otherwise, it would come loose with vibration.

If you will build some experience by assemblying or building a kit or from scratch (...best )

you will see that a manual for assemblying an ARF , is just a basic overview of the procedure,

and may or may not need some "upgrades".....

Regards

When I clicked on the above link, I got an offer to "clean My Mac" that would only let me select down load software. No way to refuse, so I had to reboot.

I don't recommend clicking.<br type="_moz" />

I guess it's because i have my browser set for blocking pop-ups.

It's all working right now!
