I am going to be converting a Hangar 9 60 P51 ARF to electric power next month and I want to install flaps in the Mustang like the 150 size. Does anyone that has one know if the wing is built up or is it a foam core wing? A foam core wing would make it much simpler for me to make the modification. If its built up then I wont mess with it. I am only going to add about 2 pounds to the plane as I will be using Lithium Polymer batteries and I want to install CJM Retracts and struts. If anyone can help I would appreciate it I am worried the extra weight will make the plane land faster and that it will need the flaps?

Tom, I did a very thorough search for the posting about installing flaps in the Hangar 9 P51 60 size Mustang.
Can anyone that has the plane tell me if the plane has a sheeted foam core wing or if its a wood built up wing please? Also anyone that's done this modification to their Mustang, can you post some pictures? If the wing is a foam core sheeted wing it will be pretty easy for me to make the flaps but I am not sure what type of wing its got. Any help or ideas would really be appreciated.
Thanks Joe

Well I guess I wont install flaps as I dont want to cut up the wing. I am considering converting the Corsair also. Because I plan to get the big P51 next year and install the Saito V twin 2.0 so I may just do the Corsair its a real nice looking plane also.
Thanks Joe

Yes I know. I have decided to buy the 150 size P51 and install a Saito 2.0 V twin and Century Jet Retracts with 1/2 inch struts. I will use the motor I have to convert a smaller plane.
Thanks Joe

I have been contemplating adding flaps to my H9 60 as well. There is a great article in Flying Models magazine, MAY 2003 edition. It has a write up on the H9 60 mustang, and the guy modified it for flaps. It looks fairly simple, with some work! The wing is built up! You cut a straight line from the inboard tip of the aileron, about 15" towards the fuse. On the bottom, you will cut about 1/2 inch aft and parrallel to the aileron towards the fuse. In other words, make the cut for the bottom of the flap, 1/2" from the cut on the top! This will allow you to hinge the flap at the top and for a bevel to be formed, for the downword swing of the flap. Its a typical flap design. You will have to cut the flaps out, cutting through ribs, then filling in with 1/4" balsa pieces in between the ribs to strengthen it. I have not done this mod yet, but Im very tempeted! It can be done, and sounds from the article, worth the effort! Good luck!

Sounds cool Fly, I went to the 150 size P51 and although I wanted the Saito V twin 2.0 it would have stretched my turbine fund so I am going to just get the 180 single.

I wouldn't bother with the flaps. I had a H9 60 Mustang modified with them. They look great but the Mustang already is so light it floats down the runway. With the flaps, I had problems flaring the plane. They kept wanting to push the nose down and as air speed bled off the elevator became less effective. You end up with wheel landings just about everytime. You end up setting the flaps to just barely come down and at that point-what is the point ?
The corsair will probably be just as bad. Now if you add 2-3 lbs to them maybe the flaps will help.
I feel sometimes a plane can be too light, I prefer a plane that will sink rather than float. Of course, I don't want a brick either-it's a fine line. With a Cub, float's ok, with a warbird nah !

S1, I agree with you about Warbirds they shouldn't float in on approach and my second pet peeve is that the should be painted
Thats why the first thing I will do when I get my H9 150 is to start peeling off all the Ultracote and sand the airframe then I will make the mods to install the CJM retracts and then fiberglass that baby
And then paint the silver and finally trim and auto 2 part clear coat. The only problem is that I still haven't found a Mustang that I want to reproduce yet?

Like S1, I don't really like a warbird that floats.
Hey Viper, have you thought about doing your Mustang in either the "Miss Marilyn II" scheme or "Gunfighter" scheme? I'm doing my Top Flite 1/7 scale P-51D in the Miss Marilyn II scheme, and I'm having another Top Flite 1/7 scale P-51D done in the Gunfighter scheme. I really like those two color schemes.

Warbird, I have never seen either one of those schemes. I have only one Mustang book so far and its a Squadron Signal book but its not their "In Action" series this is a full size 8 1/2x11 book and it has an original color picture of Captain Orr's Mustang that H9 copied but there are not a whole lot of color pictures of the planes in the book. And those two planes are not in the book. Do you have pics that you can email me if you still have it? If not I can send you an email and you can send me the higher resolution pics than you can post if thats okay.
BTW Anyone know what scale the H9 150 size Mustang is?
Thanks Viper

Finally got my H9 .60 Flap & Monokote mod Complete. Have 6 flights on her now. My runway is only 20' X 200' and the flaps are the ticket for getting my landing speed down so I can get her stopped. SpitfireMKI doesn't like a floating warbird, but when she noses over at the end of the runway and breaks the tail feathers, flaps real nice. Only takes about 150' to stop her.
PS. My runway is packed slate dirt that is real smooth and fast like asphalt.

Viper,
Have you ever considered having a one of kind Mustang paint scheme. I built and flew a 1/6 scale P-51D decked out in a Luftwaffen color scheme. The Germans had there own Allied airforce that they used for training there pilots in air combat against there opponents.
Do some research on the WEB and I'm sure you will come across some interesting information.

Guys, I didn't realize which post this was and that it was from the past. I have since bought a Top Flight 1/5 scale P51D Mustang kit that I will be building this winter and installing a First Place 4.2 gas engine on it. I decided that if I was going to go through all the work of striping an arf and glassing and painting that I might as well build a bigger kit with a gas engine and glass and paint it. I may still buy an H9 60 size but I would like to convert it to electric power. I would like to install flaps in it. I was hoping Mfawbush would have some pictures of how he installed the flaps in his 60 size H9 P51?
Thanks Joe

Back to the H9 P-51; I agree it is a floater with flaps. Simply use some thinly cut Ultracote stripes to mark out false flaps. Look great and no extra weight, etc.

Just in case you wanted to see more flaps cut into H9 ARFs, here are flaps cut into a H9 T-34.

However, I still say the H9 P-51 does not need functioning flaps since it's almost a floater without them
