Rare Bear Videos
Picked up my Rare Bear last week. Am taking Vampires cue on running an OS 1.60FX. I'm planning on removing the sheeting on both horizontal stab sections and both wings for a "glue check" and some reinforcement. It will be well worth the effort.
RARE BEAR FANS ya gotta see these Bear videos. The "Start and Taxi" video of the Bear made the hair on my neck stand up. Wow ! There is also a video of an (almost) dead stick Bear landing. Also check out videos of Dago Red and some other Reno Air Racers.

You will also find 153 pictures of the Bear taken over the years.

joe,
if you go to the www.rarebear.com website, you can order an hour long video of some footage.
the backdrop music sucks, but the video is kewl. they document the setting of the world speed record quite well.

As for the Robart 550 retracts, wouldn't one want the 85 deg. retracts so that the struts would end up being 90 deg to the wing? I am failry new to retracts, so I wanted to check first. Thanks in advance.

I believe the 85 degree retracts is what will give you struts that are perpendicular to the ground..its what I got but have yet to get to that point....

I received my Saito 1.80 the other day and it fits in the supplied motor mount without modification. It will not however fit within the cowl mounted sideways. I want to mount it inverted so I don't have to cut the cowl on the side but what is the best way to do all the measurements required to get it spot on dead center mounted inverted?

frag,
you can simply take a block of wood and saw it to the correct width to slide onto the motor mount.
at the end of the wood you can drive a nail such that it simulates the direction of the crankshaft. you'll have to mark where the nail needs to be driven with respect to the base of the wood that will ride on the motor mount so that it matches the engine - no big deal.
then you can put the cowl on and slide the motor mount around to center it. you will have to secure the block of wood to the mount of course with a small clamp of some sort.

I purchased the rare bear from my local hobby shop for 300.00 total money. The plane is very sharp looking. Word of notice. I installed an OS 120 FS and you cannot get the motor back far enough with the motor mount that comes with it. I used a different motor mount to get the correct distance from firewall. Also had to add a (pound or more of weight) to the front to get balance. YES A POUND OF WEIGHT[:@].. Even with the OS 120. Wonder what it would take with the thunder tiger 90? Box says 8 to 9 pounds. Mine came in at 10-1/2 to 11 pounds.[:-]Also the instructs says to glue the retract area better. I did, first landing bounced 4 times very easy 3 touches where on the runway and the 4th touch was the grass and took out the landing gear blocks in the wings. The 120 flew it well but did not scream the plane. So i am going to change out the engine and install a new MDS 1.48 that i have. This will be plenty of power and will add some weight up front so i can take some of the iron i have glued up front off. My advise on the retact area would be remove the covering there and really beef it up before you mount the retacts. Hope this will help someone.

i need a measurement
since i have not ordered one of these kits yet, i was wondering if one of you guys (frag possibly) could take a measurement for me?
i need to know the distance between the engine mounting box (call it the firewall extention, the part that the engine mount bolts to) and the opening of the cowling.
i want to see how far a YS 140 drive washer is going to extend out in front of the cowling.
thanks in advance.

Hi guys...
...6" is the instructional figure quoted in the book for firewall to prop driver ...
Right
....just about finished, just cut the cowl for the muffler.. servos right behind the firewall, everything as far forward as possible....balanced as per book .....AUW ... circa 9 lb 12 oz . did'nt think it could be done

RB..
...The mount comes with this great kit...
...its excellent quality throughout..
I stayed with the recomended engine size O.S.91FX this time ...but with th 60M carb and Perry pump setup ....like the Helli jocks run...there's only about 770 sq/in of wing on this chappie so i wanted to keep the weight down ...
regards ..Dave.

thanks dave,
it looks like a du bro mount that they stocked the kit with. could be wrong...
i was able to get a measurement on a YS140 length off the internet (about 5 inches) so that would work with a 6 inch cowl-to-firewall distance. i would probably have to use a gator RC mount however, as the du bro mount may add more physical distance than the gator RC type mount. have to get the TT rare bear kit first i suppose (an xmas present to myself i think)
hope the 91 gives you enuf pull... but you are correct in trying to minimize the weight.

Greetings fellow RC psychotics, Watching this whole thread, maybe this plane is more head-ache than its worth. You guys are having a heck of a time with weight and balance, along with having to re-design quite a bit. As appealing as this one is, maybe I'll give in to cowardice and wait a while longer. Stay at it though, your doing a great job and you have my sincere admiration. Maybe I'll get one next year. MM

Here is my solution to mounting a Saito 1.80 inverted using the kit supplied mount. I had to cut away the floor of the battery box because the mount would not fit up high enough to get the engine centered. After relieving the underside of ther battery box and verifying that the mount would fit, I used the scrap servo tray ply to cover the holes created in the battery box. Everything was epoxied and a thin layer of epoxy/alcohol fuel proofing applied. Also, the blind nuts still fit on the back side of the firewall, they were right up against the battery box though.

Mike:
The model as designed is a good one and ONLY the landing gear rails need additional supporting IMHO.
There WILL always be those , like me, who want something a bit different from that which is being offered and have the experiance to go there which results in the numerous mods as described.
I will agree however, that the model with the recommended stock engines WILL need nose ballast to balance properly. This is NOT a bad thing, it is just reality of this short nosed, long tail moment model and most certainly is not a show stopper.
If and when you do decide to move forward with a RB project, I would recommend the largest of the stock engines as it adds a good measure of nose weight with good performance.
Best Regards:

Vamp, Gads, life is difficult. [ in terms of passing-up another .60 size racing RC plane that is] I probably will get one but I need to wait till after the first of the year. MM

Wolf-
According to your values the front of the prop driver will extend 15.4 mm out of the cowl..so it won't be right up against it. I'm willing to accept that and since we have that nice big shiney spinner I'm hoping it will mask the gap from view a bit. I'll snap a pic of it from the side after I trim the cowl for the engine head clearance.
On another note are you guys worried at all about engine overheating without any venting into or out of the uncut cowls on some engine apps?

Has anyone given any thought of an alternative way to mount the upper hatch to the fuse ? I sure don't want to remove and install a bunch of tiny screws every time I fly the "Bear". The grass at the field will eat them for sure !
Some kind of hooks with a spring loaded latch(s) ? Any pictures of your ideas ?
Thanks

Yo Joe,
I was thinking the exact same thing. But then I figured I'd have the hook up the air lines for the retracts, plug in the wing servos, tighten the internal wing hold down screws I added. So I think a better way to install the screws into the fuse is a better idea - maybe blind nuts in some light plywood?
DT
P.S. Lord Lucan - Is that a Graupner prop? If so which size, and did it fit without any mods to the spinner? I have a 15 x 8 I'd like to use, but the blades are really wide!
