Three hours of Twist'n bliss! The powder was deep enough to swallow up ONE pilot's pride anyway, right, Jack?
All planes back safe in the hanger, though. Had a fella from Indiana stop by on his snowmobile...he said he belonged to a club called " Farm Friendly Fliers". He said he was amazed that during his vacation, two years running, he has seen us flying on Swedetown ponds, but I think the odds favor that encounter myself. Jack's Saito 82 equipped Twist was in great form as well. I'll let Jack post the pics, they say it all. Peace
P.S. Don't tell anyone I played hooky today! By the way, what is a moonpie? Slang perhaps?

Who could think it? An entirely unforecast sun- and white clouds-morning. Winds at 5mph for a while. (Watch the ribbons on our antennaes in the pix.)
So, Down, I really have Wyld to thank for this... addiction?
Down made, on the pond, a 60 yard line with his skis, almost slumped once, but he brought her out. NO skiis would keep the prop up in that fluff. Witness the way the 82a went in. See pic. The 15 inch prop on the Twist BARELY cleared the road, but I never hit her once--though Down was pretty sure I would. There's about a quarter inch of clearance when she's on the road. Less if I don't hold up elevator.
With that new prop I can get exactly 13 minutes, 10 seconds on the 11 oz tank (that's when she flamed out on the last flight; I didn't want to come down)--and I was spinning her, inverted, at full throttle when I started that flight. I couldn't QUITE get her to go UP in the spin. Sweet bird with that 82a--though the blankety-blank thing is already making a strange ticking sound on the table. Runs fine?! Except when I try to start it without fuel, huh, Down?
The pix show the road and pond.... Down then I doing tail drags on the snow, high alpha.... Me going INTO a hover (that's why the wings aren't straight... yet).... The 82a slumped in the fluff, first landing.... Then Stu hovering--note his straight wings vs my attempts.
Then the wind and snow came and with them visibility went to 1/8 mile.
Take a look:

excellent pics!!!! you just have to love Twist action, and yes wyld, lets get some live footage of these boys in action, I bet you can film from the warmth of the vehicle, maybe one of you could mount a mini cam in the twist cockpit and make us all dizzy, or maybe I should go and spend the doe and do it instead of asking others to.
But I'm now saving for a trip to chattanooga to heed myself a moonpie. Thanks Ghee !!
Its Payday !! Gas day!!! and the twist should be up by Saturday.

Those pictures are truly awesome!!!
You guys have definitely got the skillz with the Twist! [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]
If we ever get some of that white stuff around here... I might have to try it. I know I will at least get an electric 3D plane out and try to drag the wing tip in the snow on a knife edge pass.

Waldo, don't get TOO excited about our Twisting. The pictures lie, but only a little. I have YET to hover that close to the ground. Put about 15 feet under my hover--and about 5 under Down's. Pictures lie purdy good, hm? The rest is all true--and accurately portrayed.
What I couldn't show was hovering at about 25 feet, then cutting the engine, and recovering from sure disaster. Those have to be in videos. [Bring it on, Wyld.] We've been practicing those hovers/killed engine moves. Often the nose will sometimes go down and PAST the vertical, so the bird becomes nearly inverted, which can be held there and made horizontal with a little down elevator, which is UP elevator relative to the plane, of course. Cute exits to a hover.
No sun yet today and the snow's clearing--a bit, so I may get to attempt a low hover, but the snow is so fluffy I just may try a low inverted pass and mark the snow--depending on the winds--with the tail. I may not have a picture taker, but I can always show the end result--and hope it's not a pile of yellow, purple, and balsa.

This pic is untouched.

Hi All:
Well that's Jack for you touching up an untouched photo. And just to let Jack and Down know the Vcam battery is ready to go to guns and I have tone. Just maybe when Down gets out of school on Friday afternoon and its flying weather we'll do it then.

I have a question. I have just recently purchased the twist and I am wondering how people mounted the 46 FX engine as the engine mounting rails are just a tad to wide to accomodate this engine. I know many people have used it and was looking for a good way to do it without having to modify the engine mounting holes.
Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Flyer, I have no experience with that engine, but don't fear taking a knife and a dremel tool to that mount. DownT and I BOTH had to do so to mount OS 61FXs on the standard mount. You might look to see if your mount is seated correctly. The nylon/glass motor mounts should BARELY clear the cheeks, with or without an engine. If they show too much room between the cheeks and mount, see if the firewall holes are staight, first. If they're straight, remove the blind nuts (put a bolt in then tap it gently until it frees the blind nut) and drill out the holes a bit, whichever you feel needs it, in the DIRECTION it needs it, on ONE side, and then replace the mount and try again. If it STILL doesn't fit, drill out the OTHER side holes.
For my money, it'd be easer just to take a dremel tool to the mount. Yet, if those mounting holes are katywhumpus, it might upset the way the motor sits.
Yes, Wyld, I'm hoping for Friday p.m., too. If you're free, forget ol' Down. We'll put up that Uproar. Let me know.
Rick and I got to Massie Rd. about 11 today. I flew until I ran out of gas--a little less than half a gallon, about 4:30. I helped him fly the Magic, twice, watched him land and take off of the field (next time no more buddy cord); then I flew his J3-Cub a couple of times. In the slight cross-wind it was difficult to land, so he didn't take it up at all. I flew the Katana V2 three times and the 82 Twist four times--and would have put her up again but no fuel. She sometimes, the engine, flutters in inverted flight. But she never quit--until I ran her out of gas at 11:20, first flight. I think the wind made me use up a bit more fuel.
The wind was almost down the road but switched a number of times, 20 degrees N and S of dead West. But the field was pure--except for one very old snowmobile track. See pic. Note the looooong tracks. Those were fun to make--with all the birds. The Twist 82 made the longest ones. That's a nice field, but there are wires and poles behind you, and it's further than Swedetown ponds for me.
One moment of excitement. My left hand and forefinger got cold holding the trainer switch for Rick. I started rubbing it with my right hand. At one point, Rick, excited, asked, "You have it?"
The Magic was headed straight down. Just as he said that, of course, I saw something going very wrong, put my right hand back where it should have been and flew the gd Magic. It never got really close to the ground, but it WAS going fast. Gave us both a laugh.
Hope YOU guys had a laugh today.

jr. flyer, I think the best bet is to take a small round file and elongate the holes in the engine mount halves where they bolt to the firewall. File each hole towards the outside and this should let mounts move towards each other. I agree with you, I would never dream of messing with the holes on the engine lugs.
#3216
Thank you very much for your tips guys. I think I will try and file out the holes on the engine mount a little. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for all your great help.

jr. flyer, there was someone back in this thread about 6 months or so that was running a .46FX in his Twist. He was very happy with it and said it would do a few tricks better than the Twists at his club running four strokes. There's something to be said for keeping it as light as possible. Good flying j.f.

junior flyer, I'm so sorry I misread what you said: too WIDE not too narrow. Forget what I said about cutting on the mount, but what I said about the firewall holes still applies, just in the NARROWER direction, not wider.
I was just a little drunk from flying the Twist when I came home to read your comment. Forgive me.

Hey ya'll, I've had my twist for about 6 mo now. It's my first arf, I've been flying for 8 mo now. I just flew the rear bearing out of my Evolution .46 and ordered a Magnum .91. I've never had 4 stroke, and curious as to what prop to run, do I need to do any gear mods. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
#3222
Thanks guys. I got the engine mounted and you guys are right. This sucker is light. Thanks for all of your help. I wonder if it will do mild 3D with this setup as I have a Funtana 90 to be prepared for.
#3223
stang, I think a 15x4W would probably be the best 3-D prop for that .91. I ran a 14" on my Twist for a few flights and I think I remember the prop just clearing with the plane level. You may have to bend the gear down some or go with aftermarket gear. I think there have been a few Twist pilots running .91 four strokes. You might scroll down to where it says "search this thread" and try typing in ".91 four stroke" or something like that. I'm looking forward to your flight report with that big .91 in the Twist.
