GP Super Stearman

Airportbum... I came into a GP Super Stearman a while back but it has remained in the box because I just couldn't get excited about a Super Stearman. Your standard version got my liver quivering a bit however as the standard version is more to my personal taste.

Thanks AA5BY, I had The Super before the PT-17 was available, but since I already had a Stearman I could not see buying another at the time. But if I were to rebuild it I would have my PT-17. So the inevitable finally happend last summer right before a contest, so it came to be. I started looking for a color scheme that would use the white fuse, landing gear and struts. This is a scan of the Stearman that set me off. Thanks again for the compliment. Jeff

Thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on the stearman. I built mine per the GP instructions. I used a G26 for power. Due to the width of the mount, I laminated some ply to use as an extension.
While this worked, I had to cut out the beveled triangle stock to get the ply to fit. I also had to cut the ply at an angle for it to be wide enough for the Zenoah bolt pattern. Bottom line don't do it. The ply adds a lot of weight. The G26 does a good job flying the plane. Even so, I've now got a new one with a DLE30 in their boxes waiting.
I switched over my batteries to Li Ion. Best decision I've made. It's an expensive change over but well worth it. I mounted a 2 cell 2600 pack on the firewall in the engine compartment with a 5 Volt regulator for the Zenoah ignition. This added more weight so I had to open the covering underneath behind the wing bolts and I mounted two 2 cell 2600 Li Ion packs. All the packs require a regulator to get it to 6 volts.
Even with all the extra batteries, the G26 still flies it well. The 2 cell LiIon packs are just over 3 oz's so not a lot of difference in weight anyway. LiIon is the way to go. You can fly pretty much all day without needing a charge.
I've put them in my H9 Taylorcraft as well. Since some of you are considering the H9 T-Craft, the G-20 pulls it very scale like and is one sweet engine.
I've rambled on quite a bit. If you have a question, don't hesitate to ask.

Kivisto, Hi, I have a SS with the 170R mounted and it flies quite scale with ample power, I have a technopower 9B 3cuin. and it would fit perfectly under the cowl. I have also a Saito 325 and it would be way to heavy as would the Asp 400.

Xairflyer, mine are set 1 3/4" from traling edge of aileron to center of base or 1 1/2" to back edge of base on both upper and lower with the pushrod holes facing out on upper and facing in on lower. This was a trial and error setting to get equal movement on ailerons. Hope this helps.

I set the aileron movement for bottom wing by what the instr. called for. It flies fine on this setting, haven't changed it. Don't remember what the top wing shows movement wise, but it was equal to or close to what the instr. say.

I'm about 75% complete my stearman build, this is my third plane, but first arf build, and have one quick question about the fuel tank setup. I am using the stock tank, with du-bro neoprene fuel line on my clunk, my question is, does the clunk have to be able to make it to the front of the tank as well? The clunk only moves about the rear of the tank, the line doesn't bend enough for the clunk to reach the front of the tank, should it?

Done a lot of searching on the net and very surprised that I cant come up with any pics of N146CM only one I found was below.
There are plenty of the Red Baron Super Stearmans but none of N146CM which makes you wonder how GP came to choose this version.
Note that N146CM uses the more conventional spinner nut rather than the big round spinner as in the kit and on the Red Baron Stearmans. I personally love the shape of the big spinner looks much better.

Just purchased once the other day. I had a PT-17, but it was mid-aired and would have cost more to rebuild so I got a new one. I put a Sait 20cc gas engine in and it fits great. Pulls it around with plenty of extra power too.

I assume this is monocote which I haven't worked with before. I have used ultracote many times and have not had the difficulty I am having here.
Basically, the plane is fine but the ailerons-YIKESsuper wrinkles.
I have used an iron (set at 325 or so) and also tried a heat gun, and while I have gotten some smoothing the ailerons still look kind of crappy. I suppose I can completely re-cover, but that would be a bit of a mess.
Any ideas?

The problems you are having with the ailerons was common to mine also. The air in the bays is trapped. When you heat them with an iron the air inside is expanding and pushing out the covering and when the air cools the pressure on the covering releases and leaves it wrinkled. Try putting some tiny holes in the covering between the bays as a release for the hot air then shrink it. Even if you put a larger hole, if it is on the underside, it can be patched and not noticed. I was advised of this after burning a hole in on aileron and recovering. Luckily I found out how to do this before attempting the second.

We flew the Super Stearman last week went well, much like my standard GP Steaman except in the roll where the Super Steaman is much more axial.
Fitted with a ASP180 FS swinging a Xoar 18x6 prop with an on board glow. Radio is AR7000 Spektrum with 821's on ailerons (2 only with link) and rudder, Hitec 645 on elevator. weight 14lb 13ozs with a 3300nimh 4 cell rx pack.
