BME Edge?

Looking good David.
I just have to break in the new DA-50 then mine will be ready to go. Just got the Pete's carbon spinner this past week, so break-in, then wait for the weather to cooperate. I removed the white China "stars" and added a couple of decals to spruce it up. [8D]
What was your AUW with the MVVS?

What's your weight with the MVVS 58? My with the Brison 3.2 is around 16.5lb, it was over 17.5lb at one time. It should fly alot better now, just waiting for the snow to be gone.

I think we are at about 18 pounds ready to fly, but I'm sure that if we wanted to, we could get it down to 17 pounds without too much difficulty. We have two servos on the rudder, waaay too much battery and a huge gas tank. The 58 is a 4 pound engine though. The airplane flies GREAT as it is however.

Hey YNC,
Could you please post your setup to come at 16.5lbs? I think that is pretty good weight for this plane. Did you use any CF parts? if so where did you get them?
thanks

I got mine to balance at 5" CG at 16.5 pounds, but it took a lot of effort, carbon wing tube, stab tube, landing gear, spinner, tail gear and servo rails. I also had to mount everything I could on the firewall (batts, regs, ignition, etc). The pull-pull servo is as far forward as it can go (in front of the tank!!).
I ended up not liking the way it flew at 5" CG, so I caved and added 6 oz of weight to the nose to move the CG up to 4.75".. it now flies like it should. I am close to 17 pounds now... even with $300 worth of Carbon!
Had it to over again, I would have got the EF Yak. People are getting under 16 pounds with NO carbon. At $649 the EF yak cost the same as this plane and is one of the nicest planes I have laid eyes on.

I ues 2 1100man 6v NiCa, 1 1100mah 4.8v NiCa for ingition. 3 hitec 5945, 2 hitec 5645, 1 futaba 3001 and 1 hitec receiver. No fancy stuff. Just lots holes.

DP,
I read your posts, pretty good information. I think I am going to be doing some of the stuff you did once I finally define all the components I am going to be using. I am shooting for the lighter plane I can get and well balance without having to make any modifications to the structure other than placement and lighter components.
What pull-pull system you guys recommend? this is the first time I will be using pull-pull. Is there a significant weight difference between one or another or mainly is the horn/arms used?
YNC,
I guess you did a lot of what I dont want to do. Do you think the plane is structurally sound still?
Hey I have seen some people that changed the scheme (i hate the stock one but also did not care for the wh either). I read the covering is some off brand. What did you use to match the colors with a more "known brand"? The ones that made different trims just laid covering on top of the white base? did it work well?
Thanks a lot for your answers

This would be my first .3d style gasser i have mostly flown slymers in the 60 size .4* 60 waco bipe etc. not sure the number is roght on the servos but they are digital .
i did have a bryons aironcia champ with a g 38 but it was like a big trainer.. any help or sugestions would be most appreciated.

Just because I had some issues does not mean it is not worth looking at. I bought another one to replace my first one. The covering sucked and the instructions were useless (which set me up for CG issues) - but the structure and overall flight characteristics are excellent. This plane is very strong, as was clearly demonstrated by my 3-4 weeks of constant punishment. I was purposely trying to break it and I could not. Power dives, downward full power snaps, walls, you name it I could not break it. I finally managed to damage it while doing a set of full speed snaps to hover at a relatively low altitude (50') .. the rudder failed when the hard point pulled out.. on its descent the rudder began to flutter and the plane was heading straight toward the ground! I immediately killed the engine and pulled full elevator.. I managed to stall land (parachute) the plane without any damage to the engine, electronics, or prop. The gear plate broke off (again) and the wheels punched holes in both wings. The tail also cracked from all the flutter but all the equipment was saved.... not a scratch! Even the CF gear were still good (Thanks Graphtech!) Had I not been so low I am sure the plane would have been repairable. As is I could fix it but decided to retire it instead.
I bought a new BME Edge from a guy in Tucson (a bargain $300) and did everything to it I should have done to the first one. I completely stripped it and recovered it, I spaced the engine out fully, removed some weight in the tail, converted to a CF stab tube, used Kevlar pull-pull cables, etc, etc. I covered it the exact same as my first one.. so noone even knows the first one died! I also did a lot of beef work to the gear plate (fiberglass and balsa gusseting), that area fell apart on the first one. I also tossed the stock wheel pants and put GP Patty pants on - much better quality. I reinforced all the cowl drill holes as well.
I now have a plane that weighs 16 pounds even and balances at 4.75 from LE, that is about 28% MAC. You can really feel the 1/2 pound of less weight.
It flies a lot better than my first one, is definitely lighter, and just as strong (looks better too with a real cowl on it) I really like the way the plane flies and looks in the air. If flies much bigger than it is. As it comes out of the box however I could not live with it - it was ugly and had balance problems. If you like to tweak ARFs and customize them however, the foundation is there for an excellent airplane.
If you want a true ARF - don't want to touch it or expect it to balance out of the box without adding more weight, definitely go with the TOC or EF Yak. If you don't mind some work or you like to tweak you models , then the BME Edge is still worth looking at.
I have to say the abuse sessions are what sold me. I have never had a plane hold up like that. I now know I can fly as aggressive I want to and it's going to hold up.

Great news guys. BME will have a new EDGE coming. All MAX told me is it going to be over 2lbs lighter than the current one, will have carbon wing tube, carbon gear, carbon tail assembly, top quaity hardwares, more wing areas. will be the end of june. They also have a YAK 54 87" that is 15.4lbs with all the carbon stuff that is mentioned. Get this its $520.00 for the YAK. Can't wait.

I don't have a completed weight just yet, but should be able to get some numbers this weekend.
I have balanced it an eeny, teeny, bit nose heavy, and my tank is right in front of the wingtube, so it is slightly nose heavy with a full load, but hardly noticeable. I have to run the engine in again, in the air because it came back from DA this Tuesday and they upgraded (new piston) and did some mods on it, so my initial break in has to be done over again. But, I couldn't help wondering how good this will look with a smoke system, so I can ditch some of the deadweight and replace it with a Slimline system
!
I still have some unresolved issues with BME and am still waiting for replacement wheel pants and a canopy from Max. This is from December and it is starting to get old with them. I am not impressed that it has taken this long, nor with their policy to not break open another kit and disperse the parts to guys that need them. However, Max has informed me that the new plane will indeed have a lot of carbon fibre parts, and can only hope that I will receive new carbon fibre wheel pants for the replacement parts. Worth the wait? I doubt it, as they should have anticipated the need for parts.
It is still a very nice aircraft, but I would be on the fence about buying another until they got their replacement parts, etc, sorted out.

I think you are right as I just checked my last email from Max and he doesn't list the wheel pants in the CF list.
Too bad... they would look very cool unpainted, especially when you are running a Mejzlik CF prop and CF spinner.

Hi All
Here's the pics of the new BME 30% Edge 540 II.
It comes with all CF goodies, CF wing tubes. CF tail wheel assembly, CF push rods and FG landoing gear. Just like our new Yak 54. It weighs 8 lbs out of the boxes..Built-up wings and tail feather. 85 sq.in. increased on the wing area. Ultracote covered.
Priced 30 bucks less than the Yak for ARF, and USD 490 for ARC.
Available the end of July. Pre-order will be taken starting July 1st.
For all others who's flying the last version, we will carry all CF products for up-grate.
Thanks,
