Okay after taking about 3 weeks off because of haveing to move I am finally going to restart working on my GP Chipmunk. I had started putting the wings together and just need to install the servos in the wing. It has been killing me seeing that box sitting there. By the way did I miss something. Why is someone not installing the flaps. Is this a advantage.

Well I maiden my chipmunk yesterday. It flew great. I had to add about twelve oz of weight to get it to balance. I tried the flaps. I have never flown a plane with flaps before. The plane wants to climb when flaps are engaged. I turned down the throttle and the climb decreased. I think I decreased the throttle a little too much because I lost control for a little bit dropping each wing. I first thought I was taking hits on the radio. But got it down safely, and flew it a few more times. Does any one also have any problems with the wheel pants moving around and getting crooked. Im thinking of putting those landing gear straps behind to lock them down. The plane flies pretty well with a os 120. I flew it with a 16 x 8 prop. Not sure if this is the best prop for this plane and engine combo. This is only my 4 th plane I have ever owned or flown and biggest also.

Yes the nose will pitch up when flaps are deployed. This is normal. Start at half flap and be prepeared to keep the nose down to keep up the speed. As you carry the speed on your approach, the plane will be getting closer to the ground. As you are about to touch down on the runway, flare and it will set in just nicely. As you become more comfortable with the plane will be be able to judge its sink rate and therefore landings will become easier. Start with half flap first to get the feel of the airplane. This will make good practice when you eventually step up to Warbirds. In terms of props, experiment and see which works best. I know people using 15x8 to a 17x6 APC. Best of luck with your plane and wish you most success. John

Thanks for the info guys I will try this weekend. Does anybodies wheels pants move around. I fly off of grass and on landing the pants sometimes move around and start dragging. I was thinking of putting landing gear nylon straps to see if that will lock them down.

I'm back. Just got my saito 180 4 stroke today (here on RCU's Marketplace (NIB)) It's only 4 mm taller than the saito 150. I'm going to mount this engine inverted.

Hi, I am looking at the CG Super Chipmunk 81". I am now flying the World Model chipmunk with a Saito .91 in it. All my other planes are gassers. I would like to know if my First Place 2.4 gas engine would fit in this CG Chipmunk.
I live in Montreal, where glow gas is 25 dollars a gallon and I put in 24 gallons last summer alone. I fly all winter with the Worl Chipmunk on skis.
Thanks

Let me know where your going to buy it, I wanted one too but cannot find anyone who can bring them into Canada, something to do with the Pennzoil stickers. I have a MVVS 1.60 gas on the way and think this would be ideal.

I already have the engine, I bought it from Great Hobbies n PEI. I have about 3 hours of flying on it, and it is a wonderful engine. Worth every penny. I also own a First Place 3.4 52cc. This one I got while visiting my son in chicago. I use the Zenoah engine oil mix. Very good quality. You don't need to use penzoil.

You missed my question altogether, it's the plane I'm talking about, not the engine. They won't allow the plane to be imported into Canada because of the Pennzoil STICKERS.

Sorry about that. Great Hobbies has it, I also think they have it in stock. If you go to your MAAC mag, you will see their add. I just went to Great Hobbies and I see it is not there anymore. Give them a call and see what the story is. If it flies as well as my World Model chipmunk, it must be a fantastic plane.

I can tell you from experience that because GP obtained Penzoil trademark licensing For US only. Canadian dealers cannot obtain the kit .. (I even ordered one from a Canadian LHS that has a US postal address and GP would'nt ship it ).
I ended up ordering one from a US hobby shop near the Border and drove to do the Pickup ... Good News is the I only paid the GST at the Border( No Duty )and the Canadian Dollar is Stronger now!
I have installed a ZDZ 40 in mine and it fits well ... the standard bisson muffler is Too wide for it to fit inside the cowl ...( sticks out Both sides)I had to order a compact muffler from abell hobby, and if all goes to plan it should balance without having to add any lead to the firewall !... Very Nice ARF ...
Maybe th Best If ever had ... good Hardware ... except I Don't Trust those CA fabric Hinges on anything bigger than a 40 sized plane ,... I subbed Robarts and Dubro

easton24, one thing to remember about the flaps. When you are landing with the flaps down and you have to do a missed approach, don't raise the flaps until you add some throttle for the go around and altitude, then raise the flaps. I almost learned this the hard way with a .40 size super chipmunk. I was about 2 feet above the runway when I needed to go back around so, I raised my flaps and landed the plane in the tall grass at the end of the strip! Just remember add throttle, pull in to a gentle climb, then when you have good altitude raise the flaps. Hope this helps

Your exactly right regarding missed approaches using flaps. This is a prime case even in general aviation regarding flaps. Once flaps are deployed the stall speed decreases and once they are retracted, well ya know, there you are!! Great point and hopefully no accidents with this little pilot error.[&o]

Would any of you guys that have put smoke in your GP Super Chipmunk mind taking a few photos of your tank installation? I am getting ready to start mine this weekend and it looks a little crowed in there. Not sure where smoke tank can go or what size.
Thanks!

The Maiden flight is over. Hurray, it was sucessful and 45 degrees today. I have had this baby done since November and just now getting to fly it, whatta bummer!!!! I am running a Saito 1.50 inverted and added 7 oz of nose weight. Poured the coals to her and she lifted off just as smooth as a babies butt. All I needed to add was 2 clicks rt Ail and 2 clicks of up elev. Flew awesome!!!!!!!!!

Got my Super Chipmunk yesterday and started the build. Nice quality , am impressed. Got a question though. The control horns seem to be too small. I can't get them over the hinge line and have enough there to attach to the control surfaces. I see they also show them to be attached with 2 screws. Can this be? Did you guys purchase new hardware or use what they gave?
