Default Funtana 40 Servos

Heres the deal guys:

I was recently at a auction and purchased a funtanaS 40 size. I am putting in a saito 72. Will HS-425 servos be sufficient for all of the control surfaces. Note: I am 3D crazy. For those of you who dont know the 425 servos are ballbearing standard servos. What do you think???

For the low speed 3-D stuff they will work but not great. For instance the I had 60oz servos on the Aile for the first year. They worked but the roll rate would get slower as the speed of the plane increased. They just were not stout enough to give full deflection. I switched to Futaba 3305s which have 99oz of torque. This made a big difference. I can't say It helped the RUD & ELEV much. Except to say the new servos are faster and that helped the hover and torque roll.
Remember though I was using 60oz servos and your are 40oz or so. Some guys fly these with Futaba 3003s and don't have a problem. I just don't think the plane will perform to it's potential with standard servos.

Hmmmmm....
I am hoping to maiden my Funtana 40 this weekend and I went for 425's all around except the throttle. Powering it with an OS .70FS and it came out tail heavy of all things. Can still move the battery forward a bit but am hoping I wont have to put it under the tank. Maybe I will use the 1200mAh pack I have...

You can get some extra punch out of those servos by going with a 5 cell pack, if you hadn't already planned on that. I have an OS 70FS in mine as well and ended up with the battery in the fuel tank compartment.

Hope this helps.

Here is a pic of my battery setup. I have a Saito .82 in mine. This puts the CG at 6-3/8".

You should be fine if you go to a 6V pack, the 425's are pretty tough. The only problem might be the rudder blows back some at higher speeds. I'd fly it as is for now but get a 5 cell 720mah pack when you get a chance. The 720mah packs weigh only 2.5oz but they are Nimh packs so use the correct charger.

Ended up using a 4.8v 1400mAh nicad pack that I had laying around. Mounted it right behind the forward former in the radio compartment. Had to add 1/4 oz of lead to the bottom of the fuse midway between the TE of the wing and the tail to get proper balance. Man, its a flyin sucker! High rates will need exponential and I am not ready for that yet. Just flew it around getting the feel and played with a few high altitude torque rolls and knife edges.
Wow! First of this type of plane for me and I AM HOOKED. Servos seemed up to the task. Only glitch I had was the antenna getting caught between the top of the stab and the counter balance of the rudder. Gotta do something about that!

I loved my Funtana 40 it crashed when I did not realise that the RX antenna was slightly cut in half, I did not put anything to relief the strain. My first engine was a 46 2C and it flew really nice for sportman flying. After that I went to a Saito 72, even better ... only problem with the plane is that its built for 3D and I CANNOT 3D!!! I remember when on high enough rates I tried to do one roll and ended up with 1.5 to almost 2 rolls.

Im good to go with strain relief. Have the antenna threaded thru an old servo arm which butts up to one of the rear formers with slack between it and the rx plus am using one of those "Antenna Cowl" thingies which attaches the rear of the antenna to the stab with a rubber band. Problem is the slack end of the antenna after the rubberband mount flipped over into the gap between the top of the stab and the bottom of the rudder counter balance. Suddenly I only had left rudder. Might just tape the excess to the side of the stab to make sure it trails back behind the elevator.
Powering mine with an OS .70FS. PLENTY of power! Running a Master Airscrew 13X6 prop right now but might try an APC 13X4 I have handy.
Flying at full recommended throws is too much for me right now. TOO responsive and needs exponential. The minimum recommended throws is plenty till I get used to how it responds.
Gotta love those dual rates!
