Default Cessna and Jett 50?

I love the look of Cessnas and would like to get the GP 40 size ARF. The engine I have that I would use is a Jett 50 with a racing muffler. Now I know this is probably not the best option for an engine, but would there be any problems doing this?

Thanks...Dean

Dean,

You would be ok with the engine, but the racing muffler will limit your prop choices too much. Its tuned for a fairly high rpm.

You may want to consider using either a lite-jett or turbo-jett muffler.

You will likely want to use no less than a 10" prop on the Cessna, and preferably an 11" diameter (11x4, 11x5, 11x6).

I fly the SJ-46/turbojett combination in my P-51 mustang. Turns an APC 12x4 prop without complaint in this configuration. Does not like to turn the 12x4 with the std jett-stream, and definately would not run that prop with the shorter racing muffler.

If need be, you can use a Bisson pitts style muffler (get a ST40 bolt pattern). The engine will run ok with a 10x6 or 11x5 with that muffler as well.

I hope this is helpful.

Bob

Well, it looks like the Jett is not the engine for this plane. But now I have a new dilema. I have this Cessna as well as an OMP Katana both needing an engine. I have an Irvine 53 and will be selling the Jett to get another engine. I was thinking of putting the Irvine on the Cessna and a Saito 72 on the Katana. But my concern with the Cessna is that I do not want to cut more cowl than necessary. To those that have this plane with a 2 stroke, how much cowl did you have to cut away?

Any input will be greatly apprectiated.

DO a search (make sure the time period specified is at least a year) in RC Universe on "Cessna" and you will find some pictures of the GP Cessna. This should give you some idea of how others have cut their cowls. Ignore Topflite, etc. Generally you should open up the front cowl as much as you can stand and then I would open up the bottom exit area around the nose gear strut. Here is a pict of mine where you can see how I cut the bottom of the cowl. You can see where I put a delta shaped hole for my OS52 valve cover.

Thanks Gary. I did some searches but was not finding many pics of these with 2 strokes showing cutouts. There was one person that had an Irvine 53 in his, but he did not have pics of the side of the cowl. I am really leaning towards the Irvine, and getting a 4 stroke for the profile.

After doing some more searches, I found a pic of this plane with an OS 46 in it. The cutout for the head was not bad, but the one for the muffler looked bad. So now I am thinking of a Saito 72 for it. I know it would be overpowered, but I could easily use that engine in a lot of other planes down the road. Is this to much engine for the plane?

Don't know if this is the thread that you saw, but check this one out if not:

Yes, the Saito .72 would work very well, after all the plane weighs 7 pounds or more! It was a little bit of a struggle to take off with my OS.52, but I had wheel pants on and they were dragging in the grass. Be prepared to land rather fast as this plane cannot be glided in like a trainer....it will stall. On landing, mine did with a bent gear and cracked pant as a result. Guess I should take some heavy warbird landing lessons!!

I suggest that you seriously consider the Saito .82. It just about makes the Saito .72 and .91 both obsolete. It weighs about the same as the .72 and puts out almost the power of the .91 according to engine tests. It would be a slightly more versatile engine for you expecially if you are into aerobatics. Or it could swing a 3 bladed prop on that Cessna for a more scale look......if you are into spending some money for all of this!!!
