BasinBum is a regulator really necessary when you use a 6 volt battery pack? I'm using Hitec digital servos with Futaba radio equipment and no regulator on the 6 volt battery. Have had this setup over a year now with no problems. Also other fliers at our field have the same setup, 6 volt battery no regulator with 35% planes and no problems.

Some years ago, JR servos would not tolerate 6 volts, but as for Hitec and Multiplex, and most other brands will have no problems with 6 volts.
Right after a complete charge, you will see close to 7 volts, but normally when take everything out of the charger and drive to the field, the batteries have stabalized to a lower voltage.
Also if you have your transmitter very close to the airplane at the start of the day, you might see some jitters, because the RF is getting swamped , pull away a bit.
Hope this helps.

As for 2 fasts parallel question it wouldn't change the voltage so that set-up does not have to have one either.

There is not a problem with two 6 volt packs in parallel.

These guys are correct. Especially with the HiTec servos which are supposed to be capable of taking up to 10 volts (I don't believe it as a constant 10v, although I maybe wrong). The only servos on the market that don't tolerate 6v too much is Futaba. They are marked as such although their digitals are more tolerant of 6v when it is regulated. As these guys pointed out with a regulator you get a more consistent voltage through out your flights. The regulators used today are better suited to battery packs of Li-Ion & Li-Po technology where the voltage out is any where from 7.2 to 8.4 volts and needs to be regulated. As pointed out a 5-cell 6 volt NiCad or NiMi doesn't need regulation with todays' servos.

Regarding the 6 volt pack and regulator issue...aren't the electronics, such as the receiver, built on a 6 volt platform? Therefore, isn't there a potential damage to the electronics rather than the servos (since the packs will hold more than 6 volts for some time)?

Correct, most damage would show up in the receiver as it's not designed to take more voltage.

By far the best way is to use a 5 volt battery for the receiver and a 6 volt battery for the servos. This way the receiver runs clean without any issue.
And here is one way of doing it

My first Patty had the Moki 2.10 for well over 200 flights until I went gas. Works okay but nothing spectacular. She would do the basic and sportsman IMAC maneuvers but kinda had trouble with the advanced and beyond. Not enough vertical. But it was a great little engine to get the feel of the Wagstaff. Once I went with the BME and the DA, four vertical snaps, not a problem. If you're even considering the glow motors, remember the $$$$ you need for fuel. Even with the rise of gas prices, $2.00 a gallon is pretty cheap.

Baker here are the links to engines made for the Patty. Good luck. If I left any other engine out -- it was not intended to offend anyone who may have another engine choice for the Patty. I have made many mistakes in my lifetime and will make many more in the future (I hope) but I have learned to make the best of a poor choice.

Jim,
Length on standoffs for DA-50R is 3 3/16ths" to get the exact 7" from the firewall.
You must do pull pull on rudder because the DA is so light. Even still you will have to put the batteries near or ahead of the wing tube to balance.
Skip the smoke in this one. You want to keep it light. My opinion though as the bird could loose some weight as opposed to adding it.
If you must, I would use the Slimline setup using the Pitts smoke muffler and sport pump. Otherwise Use the non smoke SLIMLINE PITTS.
I used a B&B industries 16 oz Rectangular tank over the tube.

I just looked at your picture galery, very nice engine standoffs

I have a question, about your fuel tank, what kind is it and does it come standard with the fill/overflow nipples on top as in the pictures. I like the idea, since I am developing a fuel fill system to fill faster for the larger tanks.
Thanks
Roger

Roger,
They are nice standoffs. It's a shame to have to cowl them and the engine. Need to make a clear cowl for the plane!
Did you see the fueler adapter that you made for me as well? Looks great on the fore turtledeck.
rcpilotjae is correct. You need to install the nipples yourself where ever you want them on the tank.

I hate that I have to admit I didn't search all 5000+ posts on this plane. I'm still going.
Can anyone tell me if the spinner that comes with the ARF will fit the bigger props? I will probably be using a Pro Zinger 22X8 on my DA-50 (foir break-in).
I am asking because my kit is on it's way and I want to get a spinner order in should I need one. I can drill it for the DA-50 myself.
Also, what is the spinner's diameter?
Thanks!
Dave
