I got mine from Chief. http://www.chiefaircraft.com/cgi-bin...els/Model.html They are a little pricey, but they look awesome. You won't be dissapointed. Look on the second page of the sale flier under the Wagstaff kit.

mustangflyboy:

It's a big no-no to use a soft mount or isolation mounts with any gas engine. They will shake the plane to oblivion, make your muffler go bye-bye and vibrate things that shouldn't be vibrated. Your best bet is to use standoffs with most gas engines, unless you chose a BME50, in which case you can use the stock motor mount that comes with the plane. I suspect (after seeing some Patty videos) that it's just a case of too many bounced landings. I've found that the best way to land the Patty is to grease it in and let her roll. Don't slow it down to the point it loses flying speed and just drops. Haven't had any issues with mine not holding up well.

I'm the guy from Button Willow! Hi there. The graphics are available from Bill Fulmer at CustomCut Lettering. Here's a link to his website:[link=http://www.customcutgrafix.com]CustomCut[/link]. He has a package for the Patty for about $35. and while your at it get the AMA special of names and AMA numbers.

Default I maidened my Patty with a DA-50!

Hi guys,

I have been following this thread for a few months, but have been gleaning info from this thread without posting. Because of the information that I have learned, I think I have built an amazing airplane. I just finished installing a DA-50 and maidened it today with the DA. What an amazing piece of machinery. I previously had an OS 1.60 FX on her and made the switch to the DA after 18 flights. I made three flights today and I am delighted with my new DA. I propped her with a Mejzlik 23x8 and used the stock spinner. And now the flight report:

I throttled up to about half throttle and lifted off in about 30 feet. Two clicks of up and one click of left trim and she was flying straight and level. After a couple circuits around the field, I decided to see how her vertical performance is. At 1/4 throttle, I pulled to vertical, throttled to full and started aileron rolls... unlimited... started flying out of sight so I throttled back to idle and dropped back down to normal pattern level and made a few slow passes to see how it flys slow and it sinks a little more than with the OS. I then did a little pattern work to see how touch-and-go's feel. It need slightly more airspeed than the OS at landing to keep it from starting to drop just before touch down. I did six touch-and-go's and then brought her in. With the DA it doesn't bounce like it did with the OS. It is actually easier to land with the DA than with the OS. First flight lasted 10 minutes and 40 seconds. With the stock 24 oz. tank it took 118 cranks with a hand crank fueler to fill the tank, and only 36 cranks to refuel. It used about 1/3 of the tank in almost 11 minutes of flight time.

I flew all three flights with low rates to get a feel of how it responds now. Tomorrow, I will try the high rates...

Until then, thank you to all who took the time to upload pictures and give advise. I am in your debt.

Kevin,
I would guess it's easier to land with the DA because you have more nose wieght. While this may be good for landing some of the other flight charecteristics might suffer. The next mod I would suggest would be to switch to a 16 oz. tank ( I prefer the Hayes) as you don't need the extra fuel and wieght. Additionally, I would mount the tank over the wing tube and then re-CG the whole plane to make sure it balances within range.

On another note, I flew Patty in my first IMAC meet, well actually SCAT here in SoCal, and placed third in Basic. I should have done better but the guy flying Sportman that lost it and buzzed me during one of my rounds threw off my concentration and cost me a couple of zeros. That's the excuse I'm going with! Anyway, Patty got a ton of compliments at the meet and next time I promise to do her justice with a higher finish.

I need help with two issues.

First would be that I have the old cardboard wing tubes and the fit is very tight, what is the best way to remedy this?
Second is, I really want to build some redundancy into this plane so it would be great to run two batteries and switch gear.
Do you just plug them into the receiver independently or parallel?

Hi Lean540

I have the fiberglass tubes so I cannot help you there, but I do have redundant batteries as listed on the following site:

http://www.rcbatteryclinic.com/parallel.html

I hope this helps.

Lean 540,

I had the same problem on my 1st Patty. Take a 3/4" pipe and wrap some emory cloth around it (enough to make a tight fit in the tube).
Work the pipe in and out and rotating at the same time. Do this slowly and a little at a time and keep checking the wing tube fit as you go along. You want to be able to slide tube in and out freely.

I used a 1" diameter wooden dowel and 200 grit sand paper. When you get the fit you want add a little baby powder.

Just a thought, I have a 24 oz tank in my 33% Extra with a ZDZ 80 and have plenty of fuel. I would install a 16 oz tank at the most for this combo. Its called throttle management.

I'm installing the same 24 oz in my new 34% Edge with the ZDZ 100 NG.

Lean540:

I've had 2 patty's. One with the cardboard tube, the 2nd with the fiberglass. IMO, I liked the cardboard tube model better than the fiberglass one I have now. Seems to me the cardboard tube model is better built and better covered than the fiberglass one. But that could be for a number of reasons also.

I did the wing tube with the old wood dowel with a piece of foam rubber (like the DuBro stuff used for wrapping your receivers and batteries in) and a piece of sand paper over that. Lot's of elbow grease and it finally fit the way I wanted it too. The power drill method is a lot faster and easier, just make sure you don't take off too much, too fast.

Your going to love this plane.

Default RE: I maidened my Patty with a DA-50!

Hello again,

I had three flights today and all of them were rough landings, even while I was doing pattern work on the second flight. It seemed easier to fly and land yesterday. The only thing that I could see that was different was there was more gusty wind. I really never minded moderate wind.

During the third flight, a guy at our field ripped the wing off of a big H9 Sukhoi while doing a radical maneuver directly in front of me. The crash rattled me so I brought her in. Another rough landing. Very unstable and wouldn't settle at a normal landing speed.

While taking it apart for transport home, I noticed that the fuel tank rubber band was missing and the tank had slid back about 4" to the wing tube. I was running at the back side of the CG before and a 3/4 tank of fuel moved back 4" is probably what was making it difficult.

I guess I am lucky that I didn't have more trouble than I did.

Cheers,
Kevin

Kevin:

Indeed you where lucky. Problem with rubber bands (and we all use them in one way or another) is they will dry rot. They may look like brand new, but stretch them out and they break or fall apart in a few places. Simply rubbing on something can cause one to break. Best to make 'rubber band' checking part of the maintenance ritual. I've stopped using rubber bands and even (some uses) of tie wraps for the Velcro straps. (You can get them at Home Depot, etc...) They hold up much better and are very strong. Much stronger than you think...

This is my first big plane and gasser; is everyone putting down and right thust when installing the engine ? If so, how is this done using standoffs?
Has anyone used hitec 5475 standard digitals (76 oz. trq.) on ailerons. I really am trying to stay away from the programmables cause i've seen two of them go wacky myself. The 5475 is the only non programmable i can find. I intend on learning 3D someday. Do you think they would hold up to the task or would 645's MG or 625's MG be a better bet? Thanx for all your help.[8D]

The thrust is built into the firewall so any standoffs you use should all be of equal length. The servos you mentioned should be fine, I would suggest running 6 volts with a good regulator for any 1/4 scale and above plane.

The patty should have some built in thrust from the factory

BasinBum is a regulator really necessary when you use a 6 volt battery pack? I'm using Hitec digital servos with Futaba radio equipment and no regulator on the 6 volt battery. Have had this setup over a year now with no problems. Also other fliers at our field have the same setup, 6 volt battery no regulator with 35% planes and no problems.

A regulator is NOT necessary with a 6 volt pack
