CMPro Sukhoi SU-31
Does anyone have any experience with this model?

Sounds like a good deal for the money, might take a little bit bigger engine then a .90 if it weights 10+ lbs.

RE: CMPro Sukhoi SU-31
Hi
Just bought it.
Looks like a great deal for its price, and the worknamship is superb (especially relative to other cmpro aircrafts)
Still didn't decide on the engine issue - thinking of a Super Tigre G-2300

That's what I decided to use. Found one for $105 and it should be on the way.
I'm about ready to start the servo and fuel tank installation, everything else has gone well. The instructions are not much to read but the pictures and illustrations are helpful. Used Robarts for all the hinged surfaces.
Good Luck

RE: CMPro Sukhoi SU-31
I have two- one with the Super Tigre G2300 and one with the MVVS 1.60 Gasser. The ST 2300 is a perfect match for the plane and does verticals with ease. However, the plane tends to be slightly tail-heavy, particularly if you mount servos in rear of plane. The ST 2300 does suck some fuel (9 min. flight on 16oz tank).
I have not flown Sukhoi with the Mvvs 1.60 gasser, but ignition and its battery setup was ideal for adding nose weight, and the fuel economy is an added plus. The engine is not yet broken in but it is a power house. My experience with the St 2300 and ground thrust test on the MVVS leads me to believe that the MVVS will be just as powerful.

RE: CMPro Sukhoi SU-31
Thanks for the input. I'll try and keep the weight as far forward as possible. Everything seems to be light on this plane. The landing gear being fiberglass is very light.

How is yours holding up? How many flights has it had? Any peculiarity's?
Thanks

RE: CMPro Sukhoi SU-31
Going on a third flying season with the Sukhoi. The cowl gets beat up, so I replaced it last year along with the on-board battery switch.
Be sure to beef up the landing gear block area as it rips out pretty easily. I used fiber-glass and resin on landing gear block and replaced the former just in front of the wing saddle with 3/8 in ply. I thought the firewall was a bit thin, so I cut and glued a ply firewall to the face. Can't remember what thickness, but I think it may have bee 1/8".
I also reinforced all the formers I could get to using baking soda and cya glue. There are a few hair-line cracks in the fuse. Be sure to keep muffler well away from the cowl or at least glue some 1/16th ply where heat is likely to be generated.
Finally, I replace the wheel axles with LHS axles that have nylon locknuts. I don't like the idea of using threaded screws as axles as they chew up the glass gear.
Here are a few pics of the Sukhoi and Mvvs 1.60 gas motor.

RE: CMPro Sukhoi SU-31
Great, thanks for the info, it will be very useful. I already added some glass and epoxy behind the firewall and planned on adding about an 1/8 inch piece of ply to the front, sounds like you've done much the same.
I'll beef up the l;anding gear and wing saddle areas as well.
Glad to hear it's been a pretty durable plane for you. Frankly, if it lasts for 2 years or so for me I'll be tickled to death. Certainly will have been well worth the money.
Thanks again

I was wondering how you worked the fuel tank? The tank fits in to the forward bulkhead rather firmly and the tubes stick through the firewall. The neck is not tight against the firewall but it does touch a little. Did this installation work ok for you or does it need to be modified.
I also am moving the engine to 160mm vs the 150 mm specified to help with the CG location.

I don't remember off hand, and I can't quits see inside far enough. But I know when faced with the problen of having fuel tank butting the firewall I have usually made the copper tubes coming out of tank a bit longer, and simply inserted the silicone are targon fuel tubing over extended copper tubing into firewall. Feul tubing is fastened at tank and tank is support with light foam inside tank compartment, and braced at rear tank to avoid any movement.
