Wild Hare Giles 202

I am considering buying this plane as I have a 3W70 twin that needs a home. Could someone please measure the inside width of the cowl where the piston heads are. I want to make sure there is room in the cowl for a twin without cutting holes for the spark plugs. 12 inches or more in width would be great.
Thanks

Paul,
I'm not sure exactly where the cylinders would be and as I'm sure you are aware, the cowl increases in width as you move forward. So, my measurements come up with 11.5" in width where the cylinders should be. The measurement would only change about 1/4" as move for or aft on the cowl from where I measured.

pceagon,
You've got about 11 1/2" inside the cowl, maybe a little less depending on where the center of the cylinders end up. I have mine almost completed.
I have a question for Phillco or anyone else who has flown this plane. Where did the CG end up on the first flight and did you adjust it later? I can't get mine at the recommended location without adding a lot of weight to the nose. With a ZDZ80, all my batteries up front, throttle servo and ignition on the motor box and pull- pull on the rudder the CG is only one inch forward of the wing tube center. Tom from Wildhare has told me this will probably be OK, I'd just like to hear from anyone who has checked their's.

My Giles, with the ZDZ 80, has all batteries (3 total with dual Rx) and ignition secured in or on the engine box, throttle servo right behind the engine box and a single rudder pull-pull in the factory cutout. Even with everything strapped to the engine box, we were not able to acheive the recommended CG but did not want to add any more "dead" weight for balance. Right now the CG sits on about the forward edge of the wingtube and after 8 or so flights we have no plans to mess with it. From its maiden voyage my family has been impressed with how well it holds its lines and has no tendancy to tip stall at slow speeds. In fact, while practicing slow flight and then stalls it really wants to just lower its nose straight ahead and pick up speed. We were nervous about the first landing with the CG out of suggested range but it came in very slow and stable...much better than our H9 Cap (the 70 something" version).

Hi Dick,
I'd be very interested to see the pics of the setup on the g202. I'd like to keep the zdz80 as quiet as possible without sacrificing the rpms and I don't mind doing a bit of mod on the belly...
Thanks

Today I started to install my control horn system on my G202. I am using the DU-Bro Heavy Duty Control System # 866. This is the first ARF that I have put together that has the hole for the horn already drilled in the hard points. I installed the first horn on the aileron and I right away could see that it was not straight. It had a slight angle toward the tip and quite a lot toward the hinge line. I then installed one on the elevator and it was not straight. I am afraid to try to straighten the rod due to breaking the hard points loose.
Has anyone else had this problem or am I missing something here? If I install them with this angle then the mounting nut on the bottom will not sit flat.

The control surface has a taper, so the acorn nut on the bolt going in to the hard point will not be flush if you install it perpidicular to the center line of the surface.
On the Nelson hardware I mark the position of the nut, remove it, grind a small amount off of the bottom of the nut on the same side as the hinge, and them re-install the hardware with 30 min epoxy.

Hey Wakeboy1,
Thanks for the info on the CG. If yours is right on the leading edge of the wing tube then I should be fine as mine is about an inch forward of that. Did you, (or anyone else), have to cut out the cowl to clear the left side of the muffler, (supersonic from RCS)? Mine is hitting the inside of the cowl by just a fraction. I'd like to hear from anyone else with CG info on the Wildhare G202
To answer Radar's question..... Yes the hard points are on an angle to help get the pivot points close to the hinge lines, but mine were not consistent. You pretty much have to stick with the pilot holes that are pre-drilled. To compensate for the angle on the A-nuts I used small pieces of wood shims cut to the same size as the base of the A-nuts and just made them black with a magic marker. Some people don't even use them at all, they really don't do much as long as the hard point is solid.

At the AMA show in Pasadena this past weekend, C.B.Hobby House Co., Ltd. had a 30%Extra330, I believe it was. They don't have any info on their website, but they also have the Giles, and I believe WildHare gets it from them. Any chance of WildHare getting this Extra? Looked like it was about 97" with all out weight in the 21-23 lbs with a zdz80.

Correction below.
We will have that 92" Extra very soon.
We will also have a 109" 36% Extra at the same time. Both should be available some time in spring, probably mid may.

I'd put ZDZ 80's on these puppies, I think the power/weight is well worth it. I don't think a DA 100 is worth the extra 1-2 lbs in the plane... Lighter is supposed to fly better, right?
I absolutely love my ZDZ80... Best motor I ever owned!

WE FLEW THIS PLANE LAST WEDNESDAY IN A 20 MPH PLUS WIND. THIS PLANE IS AWESOME. THE MOTOR STARTED ON THE 3 RD FLIP AND PURRED [ AFTER CHOKING IT ] LIKE A KITTEN. WE HAD A LITTLE TO MUCH OIL IN THE GAS BUT WE STILL GOT 5800 RPM WITH A 26/10 3 W PROP. I WAS HOPING FOR MORE RPM BUT! IT TOOK OFF PERFECT AND ONCE TO ALT IT REQUIRED JUST A LITTLE UP TRIM, THATS IT. BECAUSE THE WINDS WHERE GUSTING TO 25 MPH OR MORE I DIDN'T TRY TO RING IT OUT. WE ARE GOING TO FLY IT THIS SUNDAY AND I WILL REPORT BACK. HOPEFULLY THE WIND IN FLORIDA WILL COOPERATE.

have any of you guys put in a twin yet??? I have a new 3W 106 on it's way 5.9lbs at 9.3 horse how will this fit in the cowl? will it need relief for plugs or the carb? I don't worry about the plugs as much as I do the carb,I would prefer to keep the carb inside the cowl.

fryfly,
Not only will the plugs stick out the side, but the hub might as well. If I'm not mistaken, the 3W-100 is about 7.5" long, this would push the hub about 1" out in front of the cowl unless you cut the firewall off and shorten it. The full scale Giles is a small plane, so a 35% version would compare in size close to an Extra of about 31%.

Regarding the 3W 106, the plugs are very close to fitting, it is possible that it will fit without cutting the cowl, or there may need to be a small hole on the left side to clear the plug cap. It's difficult to tell exactly without actually doing it.
The carb will fit inside the cowl without problem. As the other fellow said, the firewall must be moved back about 3/4". We have several customers who have done this (move the firewall back) succesfully, it's no big deal but it does require sufficient skills to glue two pieces of wood together.

THIS WORKED WELL. WE HAVE 4 FLIGHTS ON THIS PLANE AND THE POWER IS AWESOME WITH THE ZDZ 80. THE PLANE DID NOT COME OUT TO HEAVY AS SOME HAVE THOUGHT IT WOULD. IT LANDS LIKE BUTTERFLY WITH SORE FEET.
I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE FLYING ABILITY OF THIS PLANE.

That's about where the CG on mine ended up, glad to hear that it lands well at that setting. Are you using a SuperSonic muffler from RCS? If so, did you have to cut the cowl to clear the left bottom edge of the muffler? I'll have to cut a 3/4" x 5" slot in mine or the muffler will most likely melt part of the cowl as it is right up against it. I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't fit completely inside, but then again I get a little picky with cosmetics. Good to hear that it flys well, that's the most important part.
