The Ultimate is a bit more agile and can get a little more radical that the Skybolt. But the Skybolt is a bit smoother and more stable.

That's not to say it can't do aerobatics
Yup, and with it's longer tail, the Skybolt tends to track better and have little to now yaw at runup... where as my Ultimates tend to yaw fairly well during takeoff.

It's trivial to grease or three point a Skybolt's landing. It's much harder with the Ultimate.

The Ultimate snaps much better.

Yes... the ultimate definitely snaps better, the skybolt is what I call a lazy snapper... its definitely a timing maneuver with the skybolt to stop it on time.

My 100cc AW Ulty snapped good... I should say ended the snap well.... with the Goldberg and the Patrick it was difficult not to end up with a snap and a half.

How well does the Skybolt tumble?

Wonderful sd... there was not much I couldn't get it to do. Like I said.. the only thing it didn't like was high alpha, the controls get real sluggish, real quick. I had it doing some harriers when minn was out there but you couldn't turn it, as soon as a wing tip dropped you had to pull out because your ailerons did nothing . Fun fun fun...

Sounds PERFECT trixer..... I am definately in.... how many days till Christmas???!!!!

Like I said... I am not in to 3D at all.... hovering a plane over the runway tempting fate does not turn me on. I like big graceful sky ballet MUCH better. Sounds like the Skybolt will be the perfect choice.

Thanks again all,
SDS

Looks like an APC 10'x30 pitch prop.. I wonder where you can buy those at?!?! ...

Great picture... look at all the flying wires. Great planes has done a great job with that arf, it wouldn't take much to make it a very good replica. I like it.

The Ultimate I would say is my first choice as far as all-out aerobatics, but the Skybolt is almost as capable of doing the same. The Ultimate will wind up so tight into a ke-spin that you think it will destroy itself. I can't get the Skybolt to do that.
The Skybolt is more easy to transport. It fits into my SUV where the Ultimate requires a trailor. I don't like having to assemble and dis-assemble the Ultimate. So, I can't really consider one over the other.
I usually take them both to the field in the trailor and have a "BIPEDAY"

I have a WM Ultimate and the Skybolt, and like whichever one I've got with me at the field best.

One is a quick and very agile aerobatic airplane that'll do everything I can. The other is a quicker, very agile aerobatic airplane that'll do everyhting I can. win win

Actually, a guy I build for had me fly his the other day. His only had a o.s. 120 on it, so it was underpowered, but I got the feel for it. Sweet airplane. Actually, it flew a lot like the skybolt. If you liked that plane, you'll love the skybolt. The skybolt sets up a lot quicker and is easier to transport.

Oh one last thing, the dave patty is more precise on the snaps.

I love the covering changes you made, beautiful airplane!!!!

Thanks trixer

I have a Nissan Sentra... the back seats fold down and you can stick things from the trunk up to the back of the front seats... but the hole through the back of the trunk is not large. I really don't want to jack with another trailer right now..so.... from all the information you fine people have been kind enough to share with me.... I really think the Skybolt is the ticket. The DP would not fit in the Sentra. I sold my trailer and my big birds last year.... kinda starting over with uncumbersome, uncomplicated and simple in mind.... just want to go out to the field and enjoy the day.

That is precisely what you will get with the skybolt. 3 tips for you on your venture though:

Keep the iron heat down when working with the skybolt, it is chinacoat regardless of what they advertise. My covering held up well, but on high heat you will burn through it quickly when de-wrinkling.

Sand and reinforce the wheel pants with some light ply and epoxy. Like any others, they cracked in the typical spots. With such a beautiful airplane, you have to have the wheel pants on!!!!

Check the interplane struts between each flight. They are very easy to install, but I found they would loosen over time. Be safe, just check em(it takes less the 10 seconds of your time).

Also, I know MINN said he loved the tailwheel, but mine loosened up on me twice. Chuck it for the new dubro semi-scale one or a sullivan.

Good luck!!!

I fixed the wheelpants problem on both my Ulti and my Skybolt. I beefed up the inside of the pants with lite ply and and let the axles go through both sides. No more cracking problem!
Use plenty of Locktite on ALL threaded parts on the Skybolt and you shouldn't have any loosening problems.

I have Skybolt ARF. Was going to useOS91fs until I saw Minnflyers with smoke. I want smoke. I have Saito100 NIB or I have a YS91 I could pull out of Zero warbird. Will the Saito be enough for smoke or should I pull the YS91??? I have YS110 but probably a waste of power on this plane??

Ya, the y.s. 110 would be a little too much. The saito 1.00 with smoke would be a very good match.

I don't know if I would loctite the interplane strut screws that go into the wing, after a while this would only make it much more difficult to get on and off. By all means loctite them if you don't plan to disassemble every trip.
