Hey TOC or anybody owning a WM extra
Did you have any problems with your rudder lining up on the fuseluge or your stabs being a little off??
My rudder seems to be cocked to the right at the top a little bit. I don't know if it is the fin or rudder itself. The rudder lines up with the fin but when I put it on the fuseluge, it seems to be off. If I sand the back post on the rudder and move it back on centerline, then my front piece with be off.
My stabs don't have the equal distance from the center/front of the fuseluge back...used a string. Did yours have same problem? Any suggestions??
Hope MG reads this since he did a great review and talked about shiming something but don't know exactly what.
Still waiting on my RC hardware and engine. Not going to glue on tail til I install hardware. Hopefully I can figure something out to straighten this thing out.

I had to sand off the bottom of my vertical stabilizer to get a good fit.It would have left a big seam between the fuse and the vertical stab if I had not have done that.It was not angled left or right though.Tivey

I am getting ready to start on mine (red & white).
I am using a Moki 2.10 with the back plate mount and plan to mount the engine on its side at 90 deg. in hopes to get the Pitts style muffler inside the cowl with just the ex. tubes sticking out the bottom.
I too think this should be a great combo.
Will let you know how it gos.

Got my RC hardware in today and now just waiting for my Taurus to come in. Will let you know when ready to fly and the results. I will post some pictures when complete.

Saw my friend's fly today with a 1.60 and it had unlimited vert. Even accelerated out of a hover(full throttle). He's running a pump and it screams. He says his came out to 13 lbs. Watched it land at a crawl and I believe him! I want one!

Here is a pic of my Extra 300 that H82crash was talking about. It has a Os 160 and It hovers just fine. I'm running a perry pump on it which really makes a huge difference. Prop wise I first tried a 18x6 pro zinger but now I got a 18x8 mejzlik and it's a big improvement. Love the plane. If you where to install a gas motor on this plane it would need tall weight. I think if you really wanted to over power this plane put the moki on it and a bigger fuel tank.

I have the purple and white version ( Just beautiful) I installed a OS 160 w/ a bisson Pitts muffler and turned the engine to 90 degrees (sidemounted). I used very little of the hardware. I used Robart pin hinges (3/16") and Rocket City control arms. I installed 3/16 dowels through the balsa with a hole for the control arms. I glued the stab and used the screws that came with it. At first I used the plastic piece to hold the pants on, but before I put the plane on the floor one broke.I live in Naples Florida and the grass is pretty tough. I used blind nuts instead. ( HIghly recommened)
The plans are as bad as the hardware so I looked through them and basically built the plane the way I wanted it built. (to Last)
I have used wing nuts instead of the nuts supplied I drilled a hole through them and attached spring clips (They won't come off)
Can you imagine a plne of this size with L bends for conrtol surfaces. I am about to balance it and fly it this week.
Someone mentioned a pump for a 160 ? Please comment !!

See my pictures on the page before this one. The pump is highly recommended with this motor. You really need it if you are going to use a pitts style muffler. There isn't enough back persure to supply the correct amount of fuel persure that this motor needs even with the stock muffler. The perry pump will help with this. Trust me on this one. I've now built 3 of these planes all with stock hardware. except hinges used ca type. I have had no problems with anything. I lost count of the number of flights on these plane but it's up there. I used Ca hinges and doubled what the plans call for. The metal are fine but I saved a bunch of weight with ca. I used the Sig brand of hinges. They work really good. I have had no problems with the wheel pants on any of the planes they are preety stronge but you do have to do some trimming to ensure there is no tension on the part that goes on back. If there is it will crack.
This plane will hover but only if you have a pump on the motor and 18x6 pro zinger or 18x8 mejzlik prop.

Go with the Moki. Look at the rated HP of each. Moki is listed as 4.95 hp and the BGX is listing 4.1. The math seems easy for the same displacement. Plus, I believe the BGX is a little heavier than the Moki.

Perry sells a pump that works great for this size engine, as well as the larger Mokis. I have a VC-30 which runs off crankcase pressure, meaning that you will have to drill and tap the back of the crankcase. The pressure line goes to the back of the pump, then your fuel line goes in one side and out the other into the carb. There is another version that runs off the oscillation created by the running engine, but I have had success with the pressure one. When you use the pump, you will notice a dramatic improvement in throttle response, as well as more power and easier tuning.

i plan to test fly mine tomorrow with taurus 52 and digital servos all around and i also upgraded all of the hardware because what came with it is absolute crap

hey all i put 4 flights on the extra today with the taurus 52 and hitec digitals all around.
flight one: takeoff slightly out of trim and too much elevator throw but when trimmed it flew great
flight two takeoff into outside snaproll or so i thought it would do but was surprised when it went into an uncontrollable wild lomchevok and came out when i released the sticks. i did the pattern stuff and flew part of the basic imac sequence and it did that very well.
flight 3- now it was time for freestyle. takeoff accelerate vertical and transition into a high alpha rolling circle. i also did some waterfalls and those were as good as the h9 1/3 cap232 and kept right on track and rotated around the wingtip fairly quickly and i also did some knife edge which was great needing only a little coulpling but nothing too severe. this airplane knife edge loops very well and hovers very well i also performed alot of flatspins which the airplane came out of very easily.
flight 4 was alot like flight 3 and i also tried an elevator which was really sweet because there was very litle wing rock and with a little spoileron mixing it would stop.

How much did your plane end up weighing? And, did you have to add any tail weight? What did you use for your balance point. Sorry for the 20 questions, just waiting on my engine (Tauras 52) and then I am ready to go!!

Another WM 300S has been finished and flown... this one powered by an FPE 52. I'm going to post a half dozen pictures, including the one in this post. The pics will have some text imbedded (pasted), hopefully they will be helpful if you're thinking about putting a gas engine in this plane. This was my first large model and my first gas engine, and I want to thank everyone in this forum (and others here on RCU), for their posts that have helped make this project a success.
The plane ended up at a dry weight of 16 lbs 6 oz, measured on calibrated digital scales. Thankfully, due to some forethought with respect to component location, the plane is dead nuts on the recommended CG with NO ballast. I should also point out that I made no weight-saving modifications whatsoever. For those of you considering/comparing gasoline engines, be aware the FPE 52 weighs exactly 68 ounces with muffler and ignition but without the ignition battery. Be careful when you compare your favorite brand... for instance, some websites and other sources show the FPE 52 weighing 58 ounces. Wrong! Obviously the muffler and ignition box were not on the scales at the time. I'm sure there are other similar mistakes, unintentional or otherwise, out there on other brands.
I've taken some static thrust measurements, and I am getting at least 23 lbs of thrust, so yes... the 17 lbs (wet) plane will accelerate nicely, straight up out of a hover. For the prop/rpm crowd, the relatively new FPE is turning a Mezjlik 21/10 at 6900 rpm while running comfortably rich. (60 deg F, 1250 ft elevation).
If you see something in one of the photos that yanks your crank, great. If you see something that might be a stupid gasser-rookie mistake, for Pete's sake let me know before I go flying the next time!
