Default Sig Rascal 110 Engine Recommendations

Sig specs list Engine requirements as: .90-1.20 2-stroke OR 1.20-1.50 (21- 25cc) 4-stroke.

What do you all suggest for a gas burner?
G23, G26
RCS 140, 180

Regards,
Sean

Default Rascal 110 Engine

Sean, I am presently in the process of mounting a 3W-24 on my new Rascal. I think this is going to be a great engine for this plane as it requires a very narrow engine in order to prevent cutting up that nice looking cowl excessively. Even with this engine it looks like I will have to cut out a hole on the left side for the muffler to clear. I will be using one of the mufflers designed for the 3W-48 twin as it is narrower than the pitts style normally used with this engine and a bit more compact. If a "straight" exhaust stack could be fabricated to allow a small side exit, this would be about as "good as it gets" although somewhat loud. Engine performance should be better though. I had originally bought a Zenoah G26 for this plane, but it is too wide necessitating the cutting of both sides of the cowl. It is a pity that the firewall is not about 6 inches wide as that would make engine selection a snap. Oh, well........

Good luck with the project. This is one good looking airplane!

Default Sig Rascal 110 Engine Recommendations

Asked SIG technician about appropriate engines for Rascal 110, and reply was they had good results with 1.20+ 4C, and small gas engines, but 1.20 2C glow would be OK. SPecifically asked about Zenoah G23 and RCS 1.4, and answer was "OK".

Originally bought a GMS 1.20 (2C glow) for the Rascal 110 for $129 new from MECOA using their "trade in" offer - a bargain. Then decided to switch to gas and bought Zenoah G23 on sale at Chief RC for $200, a few months back.

Now my Rascal has the Zenoah G23 mounted on its firewall. Had to trim the two top-side corners of the G23's mounting plate to fit the cowl's curve on top side, but width-wise it did fit nose nicely.

Folks suggested using a 16/8 prop.

At least that's what I am doing, and can't wait to fly!

Ron, How much of the cowl are you going to have to cut out to clear the muffler and carb for the G-23? That's the problem I am having. With my 3W-24 I don't have to cut a hole for the carb as it is a rear intake model. The muffler is tighter and smaller than the G-23 or G-26 also, but will still have to cut for the muffler. Looks to me like you are going to have a lot of stuff sticking out of the sides. Please advise.

Default Thanks for the replies

Sam and Ron,

Thank you both for your replies. Sam, I think the 3w-24 is going to be out of my price range. Looks like I will try to find a used Zenoah on Ebay or on the used section here.

Good luck with your 3W installation.

Sam, SeanT,

I wish the Zenoah G23 was a rear induction engine, but it isn't. I mounted the G23 inverted, so there is a cutout on the right side of the cowl for the walbo carb.

The stock G23 muffler is too big for the cowl, and would need a cutout the size of the Grand Canyon. I bought a B&B Specialties inverted muffler (cheapie) from Horizon and now there is a cutout on the bottom left of the cowl.

Not too bad, actually, and it could have been worse. At 100 yards, I probabaly won't notice the cutouts.

Sounds like a job for an RCV 120 to me.

P-51B:

Yes, the RCV engine would be a great fit.

I couldn't bear the pain of spending any more $$$$, since bought TWO engines (1.2 glow and 1.4 gas) for this ARF - I need my head examined!! :stupid:

Default Sig Rascal 110 Engine Recommendations

I have flown the Sig 110 rascal for about a week now and it is a great flying plane. I put an OS 1.60 on the front of mine and i am very pleased with the results. The manual calls for a 1.5 2c glow for max 2c but I wanted some power on the plane. I am swinging a 20/6 prop and this will hover the airplane at half throttle and will torque roll ever so slowly. I have the CG right at 5" and the plane weighs 13 pounds 3 ounces. I modified the elevator so that each side has its own servo and removed some of the elevator so I could get more rudder movement. The modifications and the engine that I put on the Rascal where not recommended in the manual and I am not recommending that anyone do this to their Rascal.

The only thing that I do not like about the plane is the roll rate. It is a little to slow for me but I give it an A+ on everything else.

Default 110

I have about 5 flights with a g-23 eng. Any more would be too much. Glo would just be too much clean up. Use Gas. The only problem I have is it floats forever on landing. So you have to plan ahead.

Hooked - what prop are you using on your G23? Are you satisfied with your choice?

Default Rascal 110 engine choice

Here's some photos of a friend's Rascal 110 with
an RS Engines 25 cc Homelite conversion. The plane weighs 14.25 lbs but still flies great.

Note the mods to the engine back plate mount and the amount of cowl that had to be cut to fit the carb and muffler.

Default Prop size

Ron
I first used a master scimitar 18-8 but it pulls to hard at idle. Now I am using a plane black Master airscrew 16-8. This seems to be just right. This plane flys great you just have to use a longer landing aproach.

Pettit -
My setup with Zen G23 looks almost identical, even to location and size of cutouts in cowl.
