Guys,
I'm a happy owner of a Rascal 110 with a 120 O.S. 4-stroke engine. However, I'm converting it to gas and, for that I've bought an Evo 26 gt2.
Is any of you using this setup? Is it possible to send some pics of how do you guys set the muffler and which muffler was used?
Any help will be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Flavio

been burning some hours in the shop this weekend, getting close to having 2 more ready for the air.........possibly this weekend! the 3rd Rascal maybe ready by next weekend, but some of us from here in B.G. are heading towards Louisville for their Warbird show for the weekend. here are a couple of shots of where i am at on 2 of the 3 planes i am assembling for other club members. wish you could get your engine installed and get some flights on it, and i like your idea of having a Rascal fly-in.

thanks for the compliment. also in the past few days i was able to get my Texan back up and running from where a fuel tank decided to start leaking. i also got one of my flying buddies Byron P-47 where she will hold air in the retracts again. the weather is looking great for this weekend. have been getting some positive feedback from a few out of town pilots that are coming.

on the inside of the Rascals, i used just a white wood primer to put a couple of coats on, then used a brilliant white on top of that. it just makes it look a little cleaner to me. as far as the floor pan, i installed some rails going forward to the lower part of the windshield former and took a piece of clear lexan(windshield material) and painted it from the back side to give it that slick finish.
thanks guys

yeehaw!!!!!!! let her rip. Looks like the same engine I have so the 20mm standoffs milled down to 17 or so should work great. What size bolts are you going to use to mount?

king_arthur1953,
I'm not sure if I'll even need any stand-offs. Ralph machined the prop hub so the distance from the mount to the end of the prop hub is 6 1/16" so I'm thinking that may work. I'll have to do a little more measuring to be sure. I didn't get my prop bolt and washer. I've emailed Ralph to see about sending one. I'm just glad the engine is here

Zippi,
i should have my Rascal back in flying order by the weekend. just now started the repairs from where i dorked a little on the last flight sunday afternoon. new wings are done and striped on the bottom to match the old set. had some major tail repair to do and i hope it holds up, may have to add lower flying wires to keep it stable(or attached), which ever works out. also, the landing gear had to go to the bench vise to get realigned. get the Rascal ready so we can gear up for a Gathering of Rascals!!!
was wondering, what does Ralph C. do to the G26EI? more power...better carb...and does he just work on new engines or does he work on older G23's?
thanks

Eric,
As luck would have it this is the time of year we start to ramp up at work. That means overtime so I'm not sure how much time I'm going to get to work on the Rascal. I'm going to be in your neck of the woods this coming weekend then Brown County the next. Ralph Cunningam does one bang up job on a G26. This is what he did for me. He took a use G26 that had a cracked case and replaced it with a new case, new cylinder, carb, ring, gaskets, rotator block, and a new Electronic Ignition with a life time warranty. He also machined a prop hub to the length I wanted so no stand-offs were required and...he cuts a lot of the unwanted weight off the engine to make it lighter. This engine has the same warranty as a new G26. All of this for $300.00. He also sells a new G26 that has his mods and many other engines including the ever so popular G62. Ralph will pretty much work on anything and has been doing this for many years as he is 73 years young. Ralph is the go to man for Zenoah engines. Here are both of his Web sites. The second address has his forum which is very helpful.

Zippi,
thanks for the info on Ralph C., i checked out the sites and may give him a call to see what performance he can give my G26EI. as far as anyone putting smoke on on yet, i have not seen it but there is plenty of room in mine for a smoke tank and pump and of course another battery to charge.
thanks for the info and see you all this weekend

hope this repair holds up, we have lost a wing on one of these and it actually did a decent knife edge with only one wing all the way to the ground. flew it around for 2-3 minutes before lining it up along side the runway and easing it into the ground. wish i had pics from that day, but we were on the buddy box and my flying buddy(student at that time) did not have time to go get his camera.
some more shots of the flying wires.
thanks

Eric,
A Rascal, isn't that some shirt tail kin to a cat so I'd say you have a few lives to go. That black knob on your choke. Did that come with your stock engine? I don't have one. Did your blind nuts in the firewall come in contact with any of the tri-stack? I'm going to have to get busy and start cutting up that square mount on my engine so it will fit the firewall. This weekend is shaping up pretty good for the Warbirds.

Zippi, the top left blind nut as you sitting in the cockpit has to have the flange trimmed (notched) in order to clear one of the stringers. That is why I liked adding the hatch in the bottom of the fuselage behind the firewall. It made working behind the firewall and installing the ignition so much easier. My stock engine came with the black choke knob and when it came back from Ralph it was missing. Ralph said he would send it to me but I haven't recieved it yet. I typically just kind of partially block the verturi when I start the engine and use my thumb as the chock. I can usually completely remove my thumb/chock within a few seconds.
Eric I like all the harware upgrades on your plane. I have all the stock stuff on. So did your bird come apart even with the upgraded hardware? Did you have gidewires on the horizontal stabilizer when it came apart. I am also curious if you strenghtened the area on the fuselage where the wing struts bolt in? The other guy in my club that flys a Rascal says this area is a common point of failure.

king_arthur1953,
I remember you saying that a little ways back about the one corner. That hole really looks close to the edge. When I have my engine lined up on the vertical and horizonal lines on the firewall the 1/4" mount plate on the back of the engine covers about half of the hole in the firewall where the fuel tank lines stick out. What did you guys do about that?

Zippi,
we had an issue with the tri-stock along the sides of the firewall as well. we modified the blind nuts by cutting part of the flat part away. with the stock engine backplate, we had to cut the 2 original mounting tabs off and drill the the back plate closer to the engine so the cowling would fit with ease. the fuel tank issue should be fine Zippi, we put a larger tank in one of the guys and and had plenty of room to slide the tank back away from the firewall. we just stuffed foam between the battery pack and the ignition and the tank. it holds it in place just fine. no problems yet. we will see you Saturday at the event.
Thank you and the guys coming with you for your support of this event!

king arthur,
as far as beefing up the airframe on my Rascal and any of the others i have been assembling, the only thing we have done is to make the area where the wing bolts on flush with the top of the fuse. my Rascal did not fail in the air, nor have i had any trouble with it. the repairs was due to me making the wrong decision on a deadstick landing. i should have just landed the plane long and got some well deserved excersize rather than trying to give it hard rudder, aileron, and alot of elevator to make it to the runway from that low altitude. included is a pic, maybe you can see the spacer we made and installed.
thanks

Zippi what Eric said is exactly what I did with the mount. I used spacers on my mount so I had no issue with the fuel tank hose penetration.
Eric I really can't see the change you made to reinforce the win strut bolt area. Is is possible for you to get a bettr pic? Thanks.

i did not beef up the strut area, although that is a good thought. the only thing i done was at the trailing edge of the wing in the center section on the fuse. i installed a balsa spacer there so when you tighten up the nylon wing bolts, it does not put a lot of pressure on the wing joint. i cant take a pic at the moment, older son went on a trip today and took the camera.........sorry. i will get something posted when he gets back in town.
thanks
