my cg is 4 an 3/4. in a knife edge I am using a tad of down elev. I think the reason for the nose dropping so much is all the down elev trim I am using to fly her ay 1/2 throttle. I built a hatch right behind the wing for the batt. I have the os 61 as far back as I can get her with out pinching the fuel line.
Has anyone had to put any downthrust on their t---t, I never checked the downthrust.
If I trim my elev to zero then she has a nice flat glideslope but climbs like a rocket under full throttle

Kerwin Mine is the same. All the same Tendencies CG is the same as yours 4 3/4 at half throttle to get it to fly level i had to set down elevator trim. But i havent built a hatch yet and my battery is in the stock location still.
Mine does the same thing. I think the CG needs to moved back on mine to get rid of so much down elevator. My 150 is doing the same thing and the Cg is at 5 3/4 on it. Both need the CG farther back i'm thinking and both land hot but both have large engines. And both required Down elevator trim to fly level at half throttle. I just figured that's the way they Fly. Going to move my battery back in both of them and hopefully that will change the CG.
Downthrust might help some but i'm not to sure about that i thought the downthrust was built into the firewall?
But tommarrow i'm going out to fly my 150 again going to strap a Mini Digital camera to it and try to get some in flight video since i dont have a camera man. Going to try and mount it for side recording so the wing tip is going to be in View. Hopefully it works.
Still have to Check the 40 over Before i fly it again. Tuned the 150 So taking it out for another run, see if it performes any better. Think it will since last flight it was running 600 rpm below peak got it up to 9000 rpm 200 below peak rpm so it should fly better.
As long as the wind don't start blowing like crazy again should be a good day for testing. will be so glad when spring get's here in full swing. I feel for all you that have to deal with all that Snow and ice back there. I'm looking foward to hearing about everyone elses flights...
above 1/2 throttle she really climbs and then at an idle the nose really drops Is any 1 else having that problem It appears that I may need some down thrust

Yes Link I too just think thats how they fly LOL,,, I am at 4.75 also my Bat is in the created back hatch and I have to use Down Elevator in a knife edge, My nose doesn't drop though upon slowing down, once she is trimmed,, its trimmed, if anything, as the fuel gets lower I tend to have to use a click of more down trim every 5 minutes or so as the nose gets lighter if I want to keep the level trim setting, usually I just fly the plane until landing time without ever touching the trim after the first initial trim setting of the day,,
What about checking the wing incidence Kerwin, do you have a meter?? maybe the incidence is a negitive compared to the usual 0 incidence it should be. like -1 or -2 or something,, that would make the plane act kind of funny also,, the same if it had positive incidence. just food for thought.. [:-]

I remember my first twist was picky as to the position of the ailerons relative to the wing. If you had them a little up, it would fly differently than if they were pointed downwards a bit. I experimented until I was happy but I don't really remember what I ended up with.

Binky, Ted, and Waldo...thanks for that. Preciate the kudos, thought I had posted those pics once before, long thread, dont remember, heheh, oh well.
Binky. covering is Ultracote transparent violet and the white is Ultracote Pearl White. Wing is cut freehand. Standard Ultracote 4" blue checkerboard on the bottom. The Eagle is a graphic picked up off of Ebay. Motorcycle gas tank graphic, so ya get a lefty, and a righty
in about any size, pretty sweet the way it turned out. Fuse was toothpicks from F3 forward, with a chink in the wing, four days later...[8D]...probably one of my better efforts

Well tested my little 3 in 1 camera today on the TVV!$T 150 and had a Dead stick and crash landing but at least the camera works. Have to get another prop and fix the landing gear so it wasnt to bad. Oh and now i know which way the camera suppose to go. video is upside down.

Calc it helps when my flying field is just out my back door. Monday it was really windy but it was out of the southwest and I have a small timber blocking the wind at 10 ft off the ground. Yesterday it was really sunny and 40 out so I spent the afternoon out flying.
Waldo I think that i am trimming my plane out at full throttle and at an idle that is when she drops her nose fairly steep. I have a sig se with flaperons and if they are just a touch bit down then the nose pitchs down. when I adjusted the ailerons I drew a line down the center of the wing ribs and adjusted my ailerons.
I do have a robart incidence meter and will check it.
I have thought about mixing the throttle to the elev but if i do that i am going to want some one on a buddy box to fly the plane while i make my adjustments.
BTW calc you are more than welcome to come up here an fly with me anytime and if its a bit cold we'll build us a bondfire to stay warm by while we fly i got lots of wood

LOL wow, I'm going to put Cheech and Chong music to that.
glad she wasn't damaged to bad.
Kerwin I always adjust my trims at Full throttle, I would think down elevons would create lift not nose dipping though,,, but hey its just trial and error until she will be perfect.

Yeah waldo I thought the same thing but on my sig somthing extra if I dropped my flapperons the nose would pitch down and if I raised my flaperons the nose would pitch up.
well now i really gotta investigate this if you are trimming out at full throttle and yet when you chop the throttle the nose doesn't really drop much.
When i put this plane together I put my batt in a hatch just behind the wing just like you showed me and she is balancing out at 4 an 3/4.
How much down are you putting in on the elev from neutral.
as soon as I get my emails done I'll take some measurments an post them

I checked my incidence it was 0 and rechecked all my surfaces. it looks as if i have put very little down elev in her little more than a 1/16
I rechecked my cg an it is hard to tell with out a cg stand it is less than 4 3/4 but more than 4 1/2 really hard to tell with my fingers
I have some stick on lead weights but really don't like using them I already have my batt about an inch behind the wing.
I may just fly her awhile and then try moving the cg back laters

Since I'm short on $$ for an engine for a couple weeks still, I've been shopping around for random stuff I could blow money on.
I was dead set on the APC 15x4W prop, but I realized that those big APC composite props can be VERY heavy. I thought about a wood prop and came across the Zinger 15x4 wood prop... http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFHA5&P=7 . It's got the flat-tipped ends like my 18x6 had on my Super Star 1.20, and it had unbelievable spool up/down. It was SUPER responsive. Granted, it's not bad with the heavy prop but still...
I've also pretty much decided on a prop hub instead of a spinner. This should keep the rotating mass/moment of inertia down as much as possible along with my wood prop. Any thoughts?

kerwin... if I was in your case, I'd probably put a washer under the engine mount on the top screws and see what happens. That or try like a turn in or out on each aileron to see what it does.

Dad,
That is the coolest covering job I have seen. Wow that looks great.
Waldo,
I am with you, I am a long way from tail touches in a hover. I am most comfortable in the 10-15ft off the ground area. My Tw**t like to drift and fall to one side or the other. More throttle straighten it out, but then I am up to 15-20ft again. I have made huge gains the last 2 years with this plane, but practice, practice, practice is still needed.

To all who read the idiot Waldo post about elevons it was Flapperons I was referring too, LOL,
After 3 bottles of Zap fumes I guess I am more damaged then I thought, I must need fresh air,,,[
] Glad you knew what I meant Kerwin, yeah thats seems strange to me, I don't know what kind of down or up elevator I have in the trim, its been since November since Waldo has seen any air time.
[:'(]
Link,,, looks like some serious operating going on over there
looks great !
Rcdude,, If your looking for some randome stuff to blow money on,, The Waldo fund is getting dry..

LOL I wish I did... I'd have my engine. I was just looking at stuff so I might get lucky and be happy with the plane on the first try.
I've never had that happen. Usually something isn't quite right.

Last week I received my Twist 40. I put a new OS FL 70 4S in it and a 13x6 prop. Sunday I did the maiden flight. Everything went fine, I love this plane. Unfortunately the elevator control surfaces have a small offset (very small, but still visible). I had to trim the aileron way to the right. Interestingly, in order to trim it out to fly hands off, the ailerons have more difference than the small offset that I have on the elevators. Strange. But I'm not a high precision 3D flyer anyway, so I guess it's fine. :-) Landing is awesome. Really slow and much easier to land than my NexSTAR trainer! During my 2nd flight (same day) I did some very mild aerobatics (I'm fairly new to this hobby, so no 3D for me for now! :-) ) and 2 smooth touch and go's, followed by a very smooth landing.
However, on the 3rd flight it happened: Right after takeoff (I haven't even started my right turn yet), the friggin' wing separated from the fuselage!!!! The wing soared slowly down to the grass and the fuselage came down, too, but not so slowly. Huge crater. Fuselage snapped into 2 pieces, right around the leading edge of the wing. After inspection I saw that the nylon bolt broke, because the tip of the bolt was still in the blind nut. I didn't fasten the bolt too much. It wasn't that cold out either, about 42 Fahrenheit.
Hangar9 wasn't responsive at all. I sent them a message through their customer support Sunday night, and I still haven't heard from them (other than the confirmation email). But in the meantime, I fixed the fuse (braced it with plywood and put lots of Epoxy in place :-) ) and it will be ready to fly this weekend.
