Hello all, i have a NIB world models Super Chip and a NIB OS Surpass 92 for the business end of it. I would like to set it up with a smoke system. I need some help on what you all think would be my best choice for a pump and such. Any ideas would be welcome.
I have never used smoke before but i have been asked to perform a RC show at our town's summer fair in july. I would like to have lots of time to make sure that i get the plane perfect before then. It is -25 degrees C and we have several feet of snow and lots of wind. I am going to spend the next while building airplanes to keep from going stir crazy. Well that and watching RC videos on youtube.

Sorry I can´t help you with the smoke, but want to congratulate you, you have bought a fantastic plane. Powered with that OS 4 stroke will do everything. I have it since end of august and have done more than a hundred flights.
Unfortunately I did not use a 91 4 stroke, but a 60 2 stroke, although powerful moves a 12x8 and the 91 would move a 14x8, with that, verticals should be unlimited. In fact I am thinking in buying another one to put there a 91.
Lots of luck with your show and your plane, the "chippy" will not dissapoint you at all. Hope you find a good smoke system.
Regards, from Spain

This should prove a very interesting thread. I too have this plane, powered by a Saito 100. I would love to add a smoke system to mine for the show aspect. I'll be watching![sm=what_smile.gif]

Right now i am way busy managing the senior hockey team and my son's peewee hockey team to get started on it. But hockey should be done in about 2-4 weeks and then i will have time. I just thought that if someone had ideas i could purchase all the things i would need and be ready to go. When i get working on a plane i get tunnel vision. This usually happens right up until my wife smacks me in the back of the head!!!!! Just a love tap mind you to remind me about the fact that i'm not paying attention to her and the kids!! LOL

OK hockey is over and it's time to get started. This will be a slower build as i won't have a lot of time during the week-days to work on it. Tonight all i did was pull the box out and check to make sure all the parts were there. I have to say that while the box that it came in was mashed up good i was really impressed with the quality of the plane and the hardware that came with it. One thing i will be changing is the pushrods, they are really stiff and don't take a bend well. I will swap them out with some softer ones. I did epoxy on the servo mount blocks to the aileron hatch cover, and read the manual several times cover to cover. Now is the time to chime in with what smoke system you are using and if you have any ideas for mine. I have never dealt with smoke before.

I should mention that this box has sat out in my garage the entire winter with temps ranging from -5 C to +20 C depending on if i have the heater running out there and the covering was beautiful, i have one small sag that i will hit with the iron and other than that it is mint. Even the manual is decent which is saying something coming from China. Thats it for tonight

Wait till you try the KE on this baby ... she is one of the finest scale planes I have flown. I had 2, 1st was powered with a ST90 and 2nd was in EP then with a YS110. Just take some care when you install the tail wheel, please cut a recess/trench for the wire to sit along the bottom of the rudder.

I have had one for 2 years, really a fun airplane. Recently bought the gp version. The only thing I changed out of the whole box was the fuel stopper for a sullivan. Fly's with a magnum 91 4st. and 14-6 prop. Never have used the flaps, dont need them. KE's are extremly easy, goes where you point it. Will have to get another, hide it for a spare.

Ya this is number 2 for me as well, the first one is in more pieces that it should be due to a take off stall (totally my fault). It had an OS .61FX in it and flew beautifully. I should be able to do a bit more work on it tonight. Was messing around looking at the wing and when i held the 2 wing halves together tight at the front and as tight as i could at the back i had a small gap at the back. Should i just sand it a bit until it is flush or does anyone else have any ideas to cure it. If it is not tight at the back i am betting that the wing mount screws will not line up right.

Flyboy - small gaps are ok, when the holes for the bolts line up. If you are not comfortable with it then why not just add some wood dust with epoxy and fill her up.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I didn't get a chance to work on it last night but i plan on getting the wing together tonight.

Flyboy, I still intend to get you a pic of my inverted Saito 100 installation. I used a fuel dot and remote glow adapter as well. It's a very neat setup.

I had one of the very first Chipmunks from World Models way back when, I lived thirty minuets from the distributor, Airborne Models in Livermore that supplied Sheldon's Hobbies which was twenty minuets from me in San Jose.
The Chipmunk is a very good flier and construction has come a long way from the first generation birds in that they no longer use "hot glue" like in the retracts on the one I had.
I used a inverted Super Tiger 90-K with a "war bird" in cowl muffler from Top-Flite, seemed to be a perfect match.
I don't recall just how much room is in the fuse for smoke but don't go over board with the tank, eight ounces should be enough for show work. I used a 12 oz. tank in my Goldberg Sukhoi with a Webra 120, 12 oz's of smoke oil and 16 oz's of fuel made for some harry flying for the first five minuets or so till the plane lightened up a little.
It was so long ago I can't remember the name of the smoke pump but it plugged into my receiver, any switched channel except retracts and had it's own 600 mil battery.
Good luck.

Ya i was thinking that with dual aileron servos flaps and such i would just run an extra battery pack and using a y harness plug the retracts and smoke pump on the same servo, when the wheels are down the smoke is off and when they are up the smoke is on. I was also thinking i might rig it up with my throttle servo and when the throttle is over 1/2 the smoke would come on. Not sure but an 8 oz. tank would be tops in my eyes. Lots of ideas and a little while until i am there yet.

Got the wing epoxied together last night and used a couple of clamps like it showed in the RCU review. Worked pretty good and when i trial fitted the wing the bolts lined up just right. also got the aileron servos and flap servo mounted and hooked up. Also got the tail feathers epoxied in place and will start work on the control horns and linkages once i get a chance and i will glue the servo tray in and start on the engine mounting.

I installed smoke in my cg pitts monster, my first smoke install. i used the sullivan skywriter pump, 8 oz tank, and a bme smoke nipple. I drilled and tapped the exhaust pipe close to the cylinder head and installed the injector. Some people wrap tubing around the pipe then into it for maximum heat, i didn't bother. i have the pump set on channel 5 at about 50 percent atv to get this smoke with my saito 150. Will smoke for 5 min. Just watch your weight on the chippie. I bet with full 8 oz tank, lines, pump and auxilary battery, you will be adding close to a lb.

I will only be using a 5 oz. tank as i don't want to weigh it down to much and i am hoping to slid it in under the fuel tank if possible. I was looking at the sullivan as well and will probably go with that.

Got the retract servo mounted and hooked up, and got the servo tray glued in. Also trial fitted the 91 on the front and drilled the engine mount holes. The only thing that has been a pain in the butt to date was when i was epoxeing the tail feathers in place and trying to get the tail wheel in place and glued as well, other than that this has been a pleasure to build. This will be my first 4 stroke so i am really looking forward to it.

Yeah ... the tail wheel is a pain if this is your 1st time, that's why I said to cut a notch for the wire to sit in and also to do dry fitting first before you try to glue it.

I did all that like you said i was just commenting that even with that it is still a pain. My first chippie had the wire come loose and that was a real challenge to get a notch cut out and then glue it back in after. I will get a chance to work on it more on Sunday and i hope to get all the servos in and control rods hooked up.

Ya i remember from last time they were a real pain because you have to bend them out so they will exit the fuse but you have to squeeze them together in order to get them to the back of the fuse through the formers first. Any tips on how you did this. I have been puzzling on it. IF there was a weak spot in this plane as far as building i would say that this is it. I am thinking about running seperate pushrods and tying them together right before the servo.
