I was given an old Modeltech Cap21 ARC in the box, it has a 72" wing but calls for a .60 engine??? That seems pretty small for such a big plane. I have owned several 1.20 Caps, and know their flight performances pretty well, but they were Cap 231's and 232's. I've heard the 21's are proned to snap out at low airspeed. I am just wondering if this plane is worth putting together or not. It does seem like a good airframe for a OS 1.20ax or Saito 1.50 Thanks for any info.

I had a .60 size ( 72" ) Great Planes Cap 21 way back in the 80's. It must have been similiar to the Modeltech. The GP one tended to be heavy ( about 9 lbs. ) as I remember. It was snappy if you got too slow on approach and flat spins had a pucker power of 9.5 ( didn't want to stop sometimes ) but I loved it. There have been a few kits for sale on E - Bay lately and I have tried to buy but the price of these old kits have gotten outa hand. There right up there with a '57 Vette ( yeah I had one of those too ) took me 6 weeks to sell it for $1500 in 1970 [

If I build another ?? I would put a YS 110 or maybe a 140 in it. I had to build a weight box on the front end of mine and put something like 20 ozs. of lead in it to balance it - OS .61 engine. It may even be a candidate for a small gasser if you like gassers ( I don't ).

The CAP 21 is very good at snapping, without warning too. I would go with a 120 sized 2C engine or even the YS110 but I am sure the Saito 150 would be great too.

I HAD a Lion Cap 21 with a 64 or 65" span using a Magnum 65. It had more than enough power to lift off in less than 20'. The Lion's were preprinted foam board and had the cg embossed on the fuse side. I balanced it 1/2" ahead to be safe; it wasn't. Needed to be another 1/2 to 3/4" more. The 10 second maiden(last) flight was after I had trimmed both ailerons up to create washout and slow a stall. Your's will surely be heavier, but a 90 2c would be more than enough. The last thing you want is a heavy flying plane that can stall easy or might be the slightest tail heavy. You can put on a 120 or 210 that will pull it straight up, but you'll have to slow down sometime. Make sure you fudge their cg suggestion forward and raise the ailerons about 3/16". I've also had and traded off a GP 60 size 231 and it was so much better flying with a Magnum 80 4c. As you can tell, I'm an advocate of flying on the wing and not being yanked thru the air with a big prop.
Good luck and take a lot of preflight photos.

Your CAP 21 ARC was kitted before folks flew 3D style. I do agree that a .60 would be on my own self-imposed lower end of the power scale, but if a lot of weight isn't added, it should fly scale-like (which is pretty powerful) even with just a schneurle ported .61. Today, a YS 1.10 or Saito 1.25a would be a good choice. The model is built strong enough to handle it - with some extra firewall bracing, which I do anyway with all ARF/ARCs.
I had one in 1992 or so, but sold it to finance another project. Sorry I let it go.

Ed,
I flew a old Model Tech Cap 21 with flaps on a YS120 years ago. Clocked it out of a shallow dive at 130 mph. Seems at one time I also install a Webra Bully (2.0, 35cc) with a 16x8 Graupner 3 blade propeller. She flew like a scalded ape and landed gentle with flaps. That plane had no bad habits other than dont be pulling hard elevator wtih the nose pointed down and motor running.... you will find out the true meaning of Beyond your flying skill.
Good plane wish I had one.

I knew several other people that were flying them and enjoying them "back in the day". They are not a good model for one's first low wing model. <G>
They were designed to fly the Aresti pattern and that they did well. If one's skills aren't up to the task of flying such a plane, this is not the model with which to acquire them. It is a serious aerobat's tool with no quarters given.

Hi,
I acquired a Cap 21 also with no instructions, and has an SC .61 motor that I have no Idea how to fit. The plane is rough but tough!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
