Test Flights completed:
With digital fish scales my 66 extra and a .91 TigerShark came in at 7lbs 13 ounces. Light!!!!!!
It flies very nice with the .91....Like a rocket, straight up after lift off. The down thrust helped a good bit and trimed out it's quite nice as far as a sport plane goes. I didn't get in any trouble with it but I can see where it would be very possible.
Landing pretty good considering the winds gusting to 10 mph at the very least and cross wind at that. no tipping that I could tell today but I came in pretty fast just in case and greesed the landings, got 3 good ones in and had to pack it in due to the neck giving out on me. Don't know how this neck thing is going to work out for flying. Looking up is a bi##h!!!!! of course doing anything right now is a pain in the ass. BUT My 300 is a KEEPER!!!!!!
To anyone wondering.....get one! to all that helped..Thanks.

Miloh,

Congrats on the trimming flights! Glad to hear that you were not disappointed with the Extra. Boy, that's light too at just a shade over 7 pounds.

Got back in town last night and was at the field this afternoon. The Edge now finally lands very smooth, almost like a trainer. Last time out it was just about perfect until the untimely loss of my left main put an end to the day.

Today we added one more click of down elevator to the throttle mix and it seemed just about right. Then we tried Flaperons.......we almost went to a spoileron set up but decided to try flaps first. At 20 degrees set up on a landing switch that can be hit on final approach, the Edge glides in at a very predictable sink rate allowing good flares even in a 10 to 12 mph headwind. Will probably take out the throttle/elevator as it's no longer needed.

I LOVE THIS PLANE!

Hi guys,

Here's a few pictures from yesterday, i'm really getting fed up with these wheel pants, I thought I had them on really good, but once again the starboard one has cracked and come off....I think I need to glass them..I had 4 great flights this weekend two on Saturday and two yesterday...everything is running pretty good...

Where did eveyone go on this thread ???

Did ya all crash or something ???

LOL..

I put on three flights yesterday, the first two were ok...but was suffering from lack of power at altitude, on the third flight I leaned the mixture out another 3/4 of a turn...
WOW !!! I found it...she flew cleaner and faster then ever..I had to keep it down to about 1/2 - 3/4 throttle, wide open was just too much it scared me actually...
I also got my fuel flame-out problem solved, I cut all the fuel lines shorter and changed the angle of the brass for the clunk in the fuel tank... she sure performs now...

That sounds great Sam!

Haven't crashed or anything down here (knock on wood)!

Last week was the final tweaking session and my Edge finally lands predictably. Trials and tribulations documented throughout this thread. Sooooooooo, this week will be the first week I can fly without having to worry about when it's time to land.

Flying with a Saito 91. Have never flown out more than a half a tank (stock tank). Radio timer is set on 7.5 min. Boy this thing sips fuel! Having fun with it for sure.

Hi John !!!

I'm finally getting the landing part down...as you can see my runway is a very tight and a HARD surface, like I said before this is my first low wing plane ...and it sure has been a steep learning curve from my Kadet LT40 trainer...

I can't say enough about the service at Vector Flight !!! if you were to look up the word "Service" in the dictionary you'd see a picture of "John" from Vector Flight...

He's sending me out the wheel pants with the new material...I've been having problems with the stock ones...
I can't wait to try them...

I love flying this bird....I'll post more pictures as they come...

Sam,

With your radio, you should be able to set up "Flaperons". When this is turned on, both ailerons drop, acting like "flaps". This should allow you to bring the plane in slower, which should help you out on your short field. Make sure you try it out up high first! Also concentrate on making your steering corrections on final apprach with the rudder rather than the ailerons, this will help prevent a low-speed stall on approach whether you are using flaperons or not.

My Extra is awaiting the installation of an MVVS demo engine which I'm supposed to be receiving today alonf with 15 other new engines...can't wait! Even though I won't get to play with all the engines, I am as excited as a kid on Christmas morning!

It's a bit chilly here for flying. We've even had a shot of snow already! I'm hoping to get out for a few more days at the field to try out the new noise-maker before we get snowed in.

I was down to Vancouver on the weekend, biked around Stanley Park with the kiddies on Sunday, it was warm and gorgeous! Still woudn't want to live there again though!

Tracon,

David is right. My problem was ballooning on final with throttle chop. The plane would sink fine until you chopped throttle, then whamo.....back up went the nose. This is certianly a thrust angle issue that will need to be corrected later, but here's what we did:

The first fix was to mix in some down elevator at just above idle. That worked fine, but on the last flight of testing on a Sunday afternoon, I lost a wheel in the air. The landing resulted in damage that would need to be fixed at home, so had to wait another week. Last week, we continued testing and I was going to start playing around with David Cutler's suggestion of adding a little "up" orientation in the ailerons by turning out the clevises, but was a little reluctant to trade airspeed if it turned out that way. So we dicided to try a landing mix. I have the JR 8103 that has a landing switch on it. This allows you to configure the plane for landing and activate the "landing configuration" while on final.

This was the ticket! 18 degrees of flaperon causes the Edge to sink at a comfortable and predictable rate. The plane now lands (if there is a little head wind) almost as slow as a LT40 and with no wind just a tad faster. There is very little wing rock as it slows down comming into ground effect. I feel much more confident with this set-up and can focus on enjoying the flight instead of dreading the landing.

Give it a try. Mixing is pretty cool.

John,

That's your new radio isn't it?

Sounds like you are enjoying it!

Great!

Yeah it sure is David. My only regret......

Not buying that radio in the first place! Many people told me to, but I wouldn't listen

hay guys!! just poping in, I finally got back to work myself and just checked in as the phone is silent and saw all the activity. got my 300 doing great just built to instructions and all controll surfaces set to nutral. I have not tried any of that mixing stuff but did set up duel rates but have not tried them on high yet. I did try a wide loop the last time out and found no snap at all but I did set the elevator to about 1/2 half inch up and down thanks to all the post on the subject. This bird is tooooooo nice. Cya all later.

Ooooooo! The BIG BOX OF SHINY THINGS showed up! I may be able to get my Extra back in the air this weekend with a new MVVS 91 on it! The 58cc gasser looks great too, but I'd have to add way to much tail weight to get it to balance....

You could try the MVVS nailed to the tail with a pusher prop on to to balance your 58 gasser.

I got my 2nd VF Extra last week.
I have the first one, or what remains, on the operatory table to transplant engine radio and all the other stuff on the new one.
Such a good plane, I had to have it back again.
