I think by reading the posts in here, you guys are fairly happy with the FT 160. I am not flying a Super Cub, but I try to find who is using the equipment that I want to use. I am putting my FT 160 in a Pica WACO YMF. Hopefully with as good results as I see in here.

Hey guy's, I have another OS 160 twin on my Rascal 110 and I'm having troubles with it dropping the right cylinder under half throttle. Then I have to bring it on down farther to light the plug with the onboard glow. It usually happens when I'm coming in for a touch & go and then when I go for the power, I'm on one cylinder. I can just barely maintain level flight on one.
Now, I kind of thought this was peculliar becuase my 300 twin hardly needs any on board glow except to start it (cowled in) and its using the same fuel.
Anybody have any idea's?

Thank's, Mark

Gentlemen,
I started this thread with the hopes we could pick each others brain during the project not pick on each other! PLEASE lets keep it about the cub. If bashing starts the moderator may pull the whole thread and we would lose some good information.

Stickbuilder...I'm not sure what comment you were looking for when no one got back to you but if it was about the FT160 it is a fantastic engine and good luck with your waco.
Thanks.

Bud

I would hate to see this thread lost. I also do not see any question in stickbuilders original post, thats why I didnt reply. It seemed to be more of a statement then a question? I have the 3w 24 in my cub and have no experience with the 160 twin, but am curious how it runs, stickbuilder let me know how you make out.

Actually, the OS FT 160 runs quite well. It is not a screaming powerhouse, but is a really nice, "Torquer" and thus the reason for selecting this engine for this WACO. I feel that all too often we tend to select an engine to fly a particular model outside the design limits of the original flight envelope (I have never seen a WACO or a Super Cub doing 3-D or other vertical manuvers). the engine is easy to start, and is fairly stingy with fuel.

This is the fourth one of these WACO's that I have built, and I actually have another kit on hand, and another two on the way. They are great flyers, and if you enjoy a more relaxed style of flying, you probably would enjoy it. I would say that you need high intermediate to experienced building skills to attempt this one.

Sorry about the Smart A** comeback, I was just trying to find out how the guys that are using this engine feel about it. This seems to be the engine of choice for the Super Cub. I like it a lot better than the 320 Pegasus that I also have, and I like it almost as much as the 300 twin. The 4 cyl. has a propensity to spit cylinders off the case and that is fairly hair raising. It does run smoothly though, and has a unique sound. It does not sound anywhere near like the Lycoming does though.

I'll watch my mouth (fingers) in the future.

It is the PICA YMF3 in 1/5th scale 72" top wing. As I said, this is #4 (the other 3 were sold before maiden) I have one more in the box, and 2 on the way. I'm hoping that I can do a few more before I croak. Getting old ain't good.

Sounds like a nice engine. I like the sound of the 4 strokers thats why I am getting away from 2 stroke nito and going with more gas projects. The gas seems to sound better, not as nice as the 4 stroke but better then the winding 2 strokes. Although I like the power of my Mokis. I like to fly my models on the wing also stickbuilder, The 3D thing has gotten kinda out of hand the last few years. I tried it a little and its not for me although some guys eat it up. I like to fly my planes, nothing wrong with flying pattern and aerobatics but the straight up and down thing is not my ambition.

I kind of like my Moki's too I have a 180, and a twin 3.6 with the C&H ignition, and a nice set of tuned pipes. That one really honks.

Where did you find the kits for the pica waco? I have a friend looking for one with no luck.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

I got two of the three that I currently have on ebay. The third one I bought on RCU. So I have one on the table, and two NIB. I have been talking with a gentleman at COX and he assures me that Cox will, in fact offer the YMF in pure kit form beginning in July 06. I have been promised the first production kit, and I am looking forward to getting this one. My others are die-crunched 1980's vintage (the blue picture on the box) and the new one from Cox is to be laser cut. I guess I'm a nut for the WACO (I'm not trying to corner the market) I just want enough of them to last the rest of my life. I have even considered trying the ARF that they are going to release. That's saying a lot for me.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Tell your friend to expect to spend in excess of $300.00 counting shipping. The last one that I got from ebay cost me $285.00 plus the shipping charge whis was $31.00. These are getting (have already gotten) scarce, and are commanding top dollar. I was lucky, in that all three that I bought are totally complete, untouched new in box kits, with all the wood in excellent condition. I really was sweating getting burned, but all were as advertised. I think I know where another one is, and if you will P.M. me, I will give you my e-mail address, and will try to locate one for him.

One point; I would not reccomend this kit to anyone who has not been building either from elaborate kits, or from plans. The instructions are very meager, and the parts are not called out on the plans. You need to have a good bit of experience, or you will become frustrated very quickly. This is not to say that it is a difficult kit, just that it is not an easy one, and it sure is not a first attempt kind of model. I would hate to see one lost forever due to someone starting the build and giving up.

I do not have the production numbers for the 1/5 th WACO from PICA, but it seems to be fairly low. If he wants to check out ebay, he can do a little sleuthing and just may find one on an obscure page. I got the last one that way, and why it was there, is beyond me. There were no other model airplanes on that page, just some craft articles.

I found some good windshield material for a 25 year old Balsa USA Cub directly from Balsa USA. I used the old windshield as a pattern and used small screws to attach the new one. It looks like new.

Good Luck,
