The clipped wing cub does not have flaps...only the standard version has them.

Thats what I figured but the instructions don't mention it. Very nice arf though. Looking forward to getting her in the air. I will post some pics when its done. I have had a lot of luck with Dave Patrick models so far. I have his 330L and Ultimate also. I put his 1.35 blue head ( aka moki ) in the ultimate and this is a really nice motor. :)

MadDog, you must have the clipped wing version that does not have flaps. The full wing version has flaps. They must be using the same assembly manual for both versions.

Hi everybody. I've been watching this thread, and understand that several of you have been waiting a long time for the regular wing Super Cubs you ordered. Any recent word from Dave Patrick as to when he will be getting them back in stock?

I also wanted the full wing but settled for the clipped wing, I'm glad I did now. I bet you could find the clipped wing version if you tried.

www.espritmodels.com

Never mind they are sold out there. There was an individual trying to sell one on here earlier.

I have not changed the prop yet. I'm still breaking it in. I have'nt flown much, we've had pretty bad weather on the weekends. I did lean it out some the last time and it flew better.

Are you making any progress with yours?

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Hi guys I'm new here and I tell you what this thread is making me feel a bit more excited about my new purchase of a Clipped Wing.

Here's what happened... About 3 weeks ago bought a DPM Clipped Wing Super Cub. I had heard so much about his Super Cub in magazine advertorials, I had to have one. This was a pretty big call as I live in Australia and the cost of the kit and freight added up to $1,300 AUD, which would have to be the most expensive ARTF in Australia.

Dave was out of stock for well over 6 months and I managed to find an online shop Esprit Models. who still had a few 'white' ones in stock. They were great to deal with and had it on my doorstep within 5 days. That's were the excitement ended.

The first thing I noticed was to poor attempt of covering. Edges where not even, with some overlap going from 5mm to 10mm and back on the same join. To be honest although I don't want to, I will have to recover the fuselage and one wing.

The next thing I noticed was a 5cm x 5cm dint in the wing, next to the root. At first I thought it was damaged in freight. At closer inspection, I realised the dint was from a rotten piece of balsa. The balsa was so rotten and dark, a chimp could have even noticed it in the construction stage.

I wrote an email to the shop I bought it from, there exact words were " Unfortunately this sounds like Dave Patrick modelsSome of his planes are flawless some have all kinds of issues."

As you can see I'm very disappointed. [:o] But I feel the best thing is to put it all aside and try to make the best of a bad circumstance. I will be building my Cub slowly over the next 6 months (our winter) and I'll be sharing my experiences and posting each stage.

Cheers,

James

One quick question:

As I've only been able to purchase a 'white' version, so someone please tell me what technique are the stripes created on the coloured models? Are they painted or are theyUltracote?

Hill202 05-06-2006 08:33 PM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

J-16

The stripes are ultra coat. My clipped wing had quite a few problems but I slowly worked thru them and in the end I have a plane that is very nice.

Good luck with yours and I'll be glad to answer any questions I can.

J-16, first of all let me tell you that I'm all jetlagged having just returned home last night from --you guessed it, Sydney. I was on a business trip and it was my second time there since 1996. Great city, great country! Well, anyway I'm sorry to hear about the problems with your DP Clipped Wing Cub. I have the full wing version and I can tell you it was flawless when I got it with the exception of a broken wing tip (very slight) that clearly happened in shipping. I called Dave and he offered to replace the wing but since it was so easy to fix I settled for a free instrument panel. I guess Dave is experiencing quality problems with his supplier in southern China, you may or may not know that he uses the same supplier as Hanger 9 models (Horizon Hobbies), and he just doesn't have any leverage or priority with those people. I spoke to him personally at the WRAM show in New York and he sounded really frustrated. Too bad because he makes a good product, but if he can't supply the demand and his quality goes south on the few models he can get to market, that's a real recipe for disaster. Well, hope you can fix it and make the best of it, it's a great flyer.

thanks for that. I wasn't sure if I should paint the Ulracote, as I didn't think it was a good idea, but now I know I'm right. :D

Hi,

I too had spoken to Dave and he'd express his concerns about quality and the fact he was changing his manufacturers.
I guess I was expecting a lot better and thought these type of issues would have been picked up at his end before distribution to the shops. Oh well, as I said I maybe just a one off rarity.

I also had some damage in shipping, but as I'm on the other side on the world, it was just too much hassle to have it replaced.

My background has been large scale gliders, so this will be my first giant scale plane. I just hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew when it comes to flying it. The only other fuel plane I have at present is a 1/10 Glob motor glider, which obviously flies differently to a large scale Cub.

wish me luck.

I test flew my Cub yesterday. All is great! I have a new OS 160 twin with an 18x6 prop. Plenty of power, even though its still breaking in. Flys just like a big Cub should in my opinion. I do wish it had a bit more aileron authority, but what can you do. Here are a few pics from yesterday. FYI- I still have the new in box Red Clipped wing version if anybody is interested. Thanks.

Your machine looks great Brian. I wish I could afford a OS 160... I'm going an OS FS 120 Sps III.

I wouldn't stress about the ailerons, it seems the way it flies is far more scale.

Nice work
