Well, truth be told...I had my first choice to be a new cub from Dave Patrick Models simply because I'm a scale loving guy and the reviews were in the 10 out of 10 arena. That said, things started going south with this company before I got to order. Call it luck if you will, but I started reading the posts and my plan slammed into the wall. The ONLY reason I got in on this conversation is because I got taken for some money from a so-called builder in Ohio who has shut down his website and changed his phone numbers since I sent him my money. He simply disappeared. That's why I sympathize with these guys who send their money in good faith.
I'm curious though, Bud. I understand you love your DPM cub as well you should. But you know from what you've read about the service dept. that you won't get served if you call or write them. You've read posts from the other guys who are waiting months on end for their parts (prepaid or not). What are YOU going to do when you need a certain part that only DPM can provide. I'm not trying to corner you - I think it's a legitimate question. What options do you have besides knocking on Daves own front door with an order list in your hand?

reply to post 1000 bud came so close on 3 dp cubs here on the flea market 2 were full wing and was going to get one i did not want blue cliped wing all had os 1.6 4c and missed them all by seconds:D looking at the tf 310 twin or the hp cub lots of neat gear on this one, landing gear ,wheels , panel , wing struts and the h-9 support. but never die there will be a dp-p-18 at a fly in or here for sale some day, things are so so here the boss conned me into buying a house and lost my shop, fleet is in the attic and boxes, boxes ,here is a few pics of the attic till i get a shop thanks frank99

Real sorry you lost your money outacontrol41, I've heard of that happening many times on rcu. I'm still waiting for an item that the company has my money taken from my account and have not heard from them and not seen my item, won't name drop here. As for parts if I need them the landing gear is easy to replace, I'm betting the H9 gear is identical or Robart. Not hard to find. Fittings if it gets that bad....Again the H9 fittings will work. Cowl.....Fiberglass specialties....or I can mold my own as with the windshield which I can shape with urethane foam and pull on my vacuum former. Wooden parts can be built easily enough. I had two vocations, structural steel and concrete as primary and industrial model building as secondary. After all....we are model builders right? check this link to see my helicopter work in the scale gallery. The windshields were made from plexiglass on a home made vacuum former and a shop vac.

Frank99, so now you're a home owner? Welcome to the other money drainer ;) I bought a 12 x 24 shed to build in but it's 200' down the yard but it needs wired and insulated so in the meantime i'm building in a spare bedroom. Gonna take lots of wire and need to trench it. Picture shows shed on right is storage and one down back is shop. Having lost your shop a shed may be the way to go for you also.

I have to say...all that dave Patrick stuff aside, I have a deep admiration and respect for your abilities and love of making miniature look real. I read the article about your scratch built Maryland State Police chopper and I was simply amazed. And I can relate, I'm from Maryland. We have the MD police chopper hover over and land near our flying field each year at our annual club air show www.marksrc.com
and the spectators love it. I must say again - I love your work. You probably no doubt have some trophies under your belt.
And ---it's no wonder you're not worried about getting DPM parts....you can make them yourself!:) I just wasn't aware you were such a craftsman.
Yes, there are crooks out there....buyer beware if you are dealing with a small operation. I only lost about $300 but that's enough.

Bud, your shed looks interesting. Was it a kit type thing from the lumber yard or a design and build it yourself structure? How much money to do it?

Mark, it's a dutch barn type shed built by the amish and purchased from one of the roadside dealers that sell sheds of all types. I had the good fortune of having a farmer one mile from my house who deals in them. very well built 12 x 24 and I had them put a double door at one end along with the supplied door at the front. $3000.00 delivered.


Outa control41, thanks for the kind words. I have a good friend who is a retired state police helicopter pilot. He started in the jet ranger and was flying the dauphine when he retired. I've known and been associated with many of them over the years and they are a bunch of great guys. As a craftsman/model builder? I'm humbled sometime when I see the work of some of these youngsters.

YO BUD, your new build area will be nice, just remember to have a phone near. 200 run to anwser the phone isnt funny. wrong number? I got moved in to the new condo and still havnt got my area ready, but back to cubs was looking over hanger 9 new 1/4 scale cub and its pretty close to dp"s seems so, any way except the stab mounting. do u think the os 160 twin would fit ? I dont with out cutting a set of cyl's out. but maybe the super cub cowl would work, I know the firewall is a different shape but it seems to transition well, I think, just your thoughts.no dpm bashing from me, will just wait and see if a new shipment comes in.

Hi Jim, yup on the phone line, added that to my list when planning trench and trying to figure what size pipe i'll need to carry wiring. I wondered about fitting the 160 twin in the J3. That would look soooo nice! Don't see why it wouldn't fit but just an opinion. I'd buy one but just got a GTM fokker DVI, I just love new toys.

SO you dont think it would look goofy with the cyls looking different, though like you I could vacume the other cyls off the os 160 maybe?, ya toys are cool, good thinking on the trench have to think of everthing yhat could and will need, I like the intercom from the third floor down to my work ares, saves steps, my shed at work has a wall shaker thats an a/c and heat, kinda nice all in one package.

I don't think it would look silly at all with even one cylinder each side unless of course you're going full scale. I had an intercom in the shed at one time during the summer, power when I needed it for my bandsaw and drill press was a generator. Not the greatest setup but worked fine. I can't take air conditioning well so I just open all the shed doors and enjoy the breeze. I'll be putting in baseboard heat and motion lights on the exterior. Have to finish house renovations first and see how much money I have left. [X(]

Nice plane ric, I looked at maybe building one but went with the SR eindecker....sudden interest in WWI. I'm recovering my telemaster and about to try my new radio in it. Just bought the Spektrum DX7. Should be interesting. I bought an extra receiver to install in my DPM cub if I like the system.

I also have a Spectrum 7, yet to fly. I read some posts on another web site about the receiver rebooting if the votage drops below 4.7v, leading to momentary loss of control and loss of airplane. Suggestion was made to use a 5 cell pack. I'm going to try to see if this is a valid issue or some more "gas". It seems bizarre to design it this way.

I read that too Ric, My flying buddy in Canada gives me H... when I tell him what I read. He has 7 of these radios and flys jets. He's quite knowlegable in electronics and repairs turbines for Altecare. He said quite reading all that stuff! I read it had something to do with servo overload and the way they were using them in 3D and something about E? My rec packs are all 4.8v but I'm using SR packs of 1000, 2200 and 3000mah. I also just got this in the mail yesterday since all my stuff is Futaba and the DX7 uses JR technology and reverse polarity. I don't use wall warts so I needed this for my accucycle elite and DDVC chargers. Is your supplied charger 50mah? Spectrum website said later versions will have 110mah chargers supplied.

My charger is 50ma. I can use the larger JR unit that I have...I'm all JR stuff.

Scott, if my memory serves me right the tail numbers on the original were 3" so I had mine made at 3/4" none on my wing and the fuse graphics "PIPER SUPER CUB" were guessed at looking at pictures. Mine are 3/8" in white and the script on the cowl is 3/8" also. Lost the website for graphics a long time ago when my pc took a dive but want to say cajun graphics, I think.

a question now that I've come to grips with DPM Cubs. Were can I find or what forum or site, I need one of those neat hinged airplane safety holders you knock inot the ground to hold the model tail while you start, anyone know if they are for sale, can't find anything online.

This thread is a little hostile so I hope its okay to ask a few questions. I just acquired a DP Super Cup from a friend that got it in an estate sale. It has been mostly built but not finished and is in excellent condition. It is the yellow version and there are no decals on it at all. It has an OS 120 FS mounted but cowl has not been touched so engine setup can still be changed, but there are some small parts missing (tail wires, small bolts, one control horn & decals). So here are my questions and I did read all 41 pages of the thread, but didn't find the answers I need.

1. Is the OS 120 FS enough engine to fly this plane well, with possibly more power than is needed for scale flight? Will I have to add a lot of lead to balance?

2. Are the tail wires needed for flight? They are missing. How hard would it be to make some? Any tips would be appreciated.

3. I know all you die hard cub guys will think I am crazy for this because I would have to cut the cowl, but would a 31cc Ryobi gas engine fly this well? Would it be too much weight up front?

If I decide not to finish it, is their anyone who would be interested in it (just the plane no engine or servos)? Thought I would ask here before I decide to put it up for sale.
